London riots... I'm speechless

I can't believe what I'm seeing on TV. London is experiencing horrific riots and violence including fires, attacks on police, looting all over the place and so much more. The police are completely overcome and it's getting worse by the minute. I've never seen riots this bad in the UK.

This isn't a political riot, it's a bunch of disgusting criminals taking advantage of a situation and robbing and fighting right, left and centre and destroying hard-working people's businesses and homes. I'm horrified.

I have 2 online friends who live in areas with rioting. One said he had to walk a mile just to find milk because all the other stores were either closed or looted. I'm unsure if another is going into work tomorrow. For now she is holed up in her apartment, thankfully safe. I'm quite worried about both. The former because he has a wife & small child; the latter because she's young & single and while she can definitely hold her own if more than one decided to have a go at her she'd could be in a bad way.

I hope they'll be okay mjantz. It's frightening. These looters have no morals at all, no regard for human feelings and no fear whatsoever of the police. They were going into shops for their 'free' clothes and electronics, bringing them home and coming back for more. Unreal.

One police officer was saying earlier that they're powerless. The riots are too spread out for them to gain control. Reporters are saying that in all areas the rioters have the upper hand.

Very sad.

We've made friends with several Disney ICPs from the UK. Two of them have family in the area of the riots. They talked to their families. They are okay, but not leaving their homes until this ends.

It is a sad situation. I will never understand the point of rioting, looting and destroying the area in which you live! I hope they get this under control soon and those responsible are forced to make restitution to those harmed financially by their antics.

one of our former foreign exchange students is living in London. I hope she is safe!

In Los Angeles when this happened the police went through surveillance videos. They were able to identify rioters/looters and arrest them. Hopefully, the London rioters will also be brought to justice.

I'm praying for everyone's safety tonight.

My friend was there for a football game, I hope he's ok as I haven't heard back from him yet (we were meant to meet the following day)

Edit: Facebook comes in handy, nice update on his status a few hours ago. All is well again (for him at least anyway, sympathies to others who might not have been so fortuitous :( )

Absolutely.

It's a tragedy that there seems to be a chunk of our youth that seems to think they have the right to behave like animals and yet still demand respect. It has nothing to do with colour or class or religion or politics and everything to do with the total lack of understanding of what's acceptable and what's not and the feeling of entitlement without duty or responsibility.

I have a cousin who's a fireman in North London and he's said in the past that they regularly have bricks and stones thrown at them in certain areas. In fact they're called out deliberately into ambushes.

I grew up in London and it makes me very angry that these ignorant children behave like this. Where are their parents?

My parents are flying to London on Monday they are leaving for a cruise from there. I pray this nonsense stops, seriously what is wrong with people?

My BIL is in a ground floor flat in Croydon. There was trouble in his street last night. He was OK, but I'm not sure if he'll stay put today or go to work (wisdom of leaving a flat empty!).

I agree. They've started targeting individuals now too:

There are reports of people being pulled from their cars by rioters to burn them, journalists being assaulted and mugged, and people being stripped of their clothes.

Last night it spread to other cities: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie...d=207192798388318292131.0004aa01af6748773e8f7

The people are trying to fight back though - see #riotcleanup on twitter.

Witnesses have reported groups of adults looting too.

Well if there's one thing we have plenty of in the UK it's CCTV!

I just read about this and it is crazy. I pray it ends soon and that they are able to identify the looters and bring them to justice. So much violence.

These thugs have zero interest in their community - their lack of morals is staggering. I really hope too that the police gain control soon - unless something drastic is done it's going to be another long and violent night.

That's what I was thinking last night - lots of the looters will be caught via camera footage. Unfortunately though, stupid as they are, many of them weren't stupid enough to be caught on camera, at least not by reporters. A reporter on BBC was saying that each time he came along with his camera man the mob either moved on or attacked them, making sure they wouldn't be caught on film. Having said that, I'm sure there will be plenty of mobile phone footage. The thought of them being identified and arrested fills me with joy.

I'm really glad he's okay. Facebook is great for that. Unfortunately it's also fueling the riots as it's such a handy way for them to pass on information to each other. Blackberry (the mobile phone company) are now trying to help the police by, presumably, intercepting some text messages and facebook pages.

I know. Well said. We have the exact same yobs here. Their total lack of morals is staggering. Their parents have a lot to answer for. Of course it's an ongoing cycle - yobs breeding more yobs. Did you see the police commissioner appealing to parents to get their kids off the streets? Even outside of the looters, there were so many 13 and 14 year old boys and girls just hanging around looking on and laughing.

I have a cousin who's a fireman in North London and he's said in the past that they regularly have bricks and stones thrown at them in certain areas. In fact they're called out deliberately into ambushes.

That's so disgusting. :sad2:

I saw that earlier. It made me stick to my stomach.

I really hope he'll be okay and that his flat is left untouched.

It was interesting but scary to see events unfold last night at work. I was off late, we were retained on duty, and many more colleagues were sent the 60 or so miles to London to support colleagues up there.

Hoping they all stay safe and today is calmer. Off to work in less than 2 hours.

Just mindless violence and the govt needs to get a grip on it and give us the powers and resources we need to deal with such disorder!

I can imagine the pressure you were all under. I really hope the government make some firm decisions soon and something solid is done. Good luck at work today. I hope it's calm.

A curfew, the Army, and looters shot on sight would swiftly restore order.

Bingo. During the 1992 Rodney king riots in LA, the mayhem spread into Koreatown - until Korean storeowners got on the roofs of their stores (below) with rifles -- including AR-15s, a military assault weapon -- and started firing rounds at approaching looters. That stopped the thugs absolutely cold in their tracks; subsequent analysis showed the boundary where stores were and weren't burnt was directly related to where the Korean gauntlet had been thrown up. :thumbsup2

Time for the police to start using real force and state a willingness to shoot anyone who endangers the lives of others. This hooliganism is disgusting. It reminds me of the British football hooligans who shamed their country in the 1980s/1990s by killing and maiming sports fans.
