Tonight we had a wonderful meal at Flying Fish, on the boardwalk. We have been there once before and looked forward to going back. We were NOT disappointed!
[side note: I regret to inform you that, while I dutifully carted my camera to dinner, I failed to even get it out of my purse. I hang my head in shame, and promise to photograph all of the rest of our meals.]
Our waiter was wonderful! He was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the menu items, and he made several recommendations that were spot on. We started with a nice bread basket. I ordered a girly drink (actually several of them, which is possibly why I can't remember what I drank......) For appetizers I ordered the chardonnay-steamed PEI "Canadian Cove" mussels - fennel, chiles, pesto crema, and ciabatta crostini. I hadn't had mussels for about 30 years, but vaguely remembered that I liked them way back when, so I took a chance on them. I really enjoyed the whole dish. The broth was really tasty, and the huge pile of mussels was more like an entree portion than an appetizer... much to Hubbs' pleasure! He ordered the yellowfin tuna tartare and crispy tempura tuna-vegetable sushi roll. It came with hijiki and wakame seaweed, yuzu tobiko, wasabi foam, with sweet and spicy sauce. He ordered this because good sushi is hard to come by in good old Syracuse, New York. From a taste standpoint, this was as good as the tartare dish at BlueZoo, but that one just edged tonight's dish out as his favorite. He was mighty impressed with the presentation at BlueZoo.... you know the one I DID remember to take a picture of???
I knew what I wanted before we got there. Last year I had a duo of the infamous potato wrapped snapper and steak. I have been craving this and knew that I would be ordering it again. My only problem was that the fish was SO good that I wanted more, and the piece of steak was almost more than I could eat. When I told the waiter that, he offered to ask the chef if I could have a full portion of fish and a smaller steak, and the chef said yes!!! Yippity-skippity, a home run! The fish was as yummy as I had remembered, and the steak was tender, juice, and delicious. Hubbs ordered the Kurobuta pork tenderloin - leek, fontina and truffle-laced pasta mac-n-cheese, grilled asparagus with klin-dried and fresh Bing cherry, Port wine, balsamico, tiny onion and trumpet mushroom compote. Phew, that's a mouthful, and a tasty mouthful it was! He enjoyed every part of this dish. [side note- he chose to do the wine pairings with his appetizer and main courses, and both were to his liking and paired well with the dishes.]
Portion sizes were quite generous; we struggles (valiantly) to finish our meals, but, sadly, had to leave some as we wanted to enjoy dessert. As it was, we shared a dessert, the caramel-chocolate-brioche bread pudding with Vanilla-praline gelato, spicy pecan brittle, and a cinnamon Anglaise sauce. Very rich, nicely sweet, and a great ending to a fine dining experience.

By the time we finished
