Live from HHI in a 2br

So sorry to hear!!!
Also hoping the repairs get done in a timely manner and glad to hear you were all safe.

Update:

We have power back finally, at least for the moment. I have had a generator the last few days and it helped but it was not quite big enough to do much at the same time. It looks like we may have tarp up in time to prevent further damage when it rains either later today or tomorrow.

We have a temporary fence put back up for the dogs.

There is a ton of cleanup to do. We have 5 acres of land and nearly all of it is covered with debris from either our house or from our neighbors.

We lost 5 neighbors, and many of the others are left without habitable homes. We are very fortunate but it is hard to feel anything but numb right now because we are still very much in shock. We live in an area that once had a very beautiful scenic view... it has been decimated. I guess that is not important, I am babbling on, this kind of thing shakes you to your core.

So very sorry to hear. There are no words. We have kept all those that were lost and affected in our prayers.

We appreciate all the kind words and prayer and I am sure the others affected appreciate it too.

Tragedy brings out the best in some and the worst in others. Most of you here do not know me from Adam and yet you offer your kindness while others take this opportunity to loot homes and still others promise repairs but instead scam the victims out of money. All of this has been happening in the area.

I apologize to the mods. I guess this thread has gone way off the original topic. If you need to move it, I understand.

Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear about your neighbors.

Things like this really tend to put things into perspective about what is really important.

Glad you're starting to get things back into some sort of order.

Please keep us posted.

:grouphug: I find it so hard to wrap my head about the huge scale of loss. So far your family is the only one I know (all right -- just through the Disboards), but please know many thoughts and prayers are intended for all those impacted by these tornadoes.

I haven't even wrapped my head around it yet. Half the time we are walking around here like zombies. I think the only way to stay sane right now is to focus on protecting the home from further damage and looters and then setting the wheels in motion to rebuild. I was raised to believe that the true test of character was how you handle the bad times so I am falling back on those natural instincts and resourcefulness to keep my legs underneath me for now. Obviously helping our neighbors is a high priority as well. We haven't been able to cook gourmet meals with only a hot plate, broiler oven, and a microwave but we are trying to feed as many people as we can as often as we can.

:grouphug: I'm sorry this happened, and will keep you in my prayers.

Today I have been stuck by the phone most of the day lining people up and dealing with insurance and whatnot. I decided to give MS a try and see if there was any chance they might help us out on the points we lost. I expected a no and since we had no travel insurance I expected those to be lost.

Needless to say I am STUNNED that they refunded our points.

So a big thanks to DVC for not treating me like a faceless number. I am not sure when we might be able to use them but at the very least we will send someone else.

I am sooooo happy MS helped you out. You certainly are a link in the "chain of love."

 to you and your family. Our HS is organizing a drive for money and items to be sent to the affected areas. We have had e-mails from former students now going to college in Alabama. Prayers to all dealing with this nightmare.

That is very good of you and your school. I know tarps are still in short supply. I had to drive 3 towns over to get some for my home. Of course, the families that lost everything need, well, everything.

Update:

Stuck in waiting for insurance adjuster land. We finally got a call and will see him toward the end of next week. I realize they have a lot to deal with and I am trying to be patient but each time it rains more damage is done. There is a reason why people do not use tarps as longterm roofing material. We have some makeshift walls up to keep the looters out. It is not fort knox but from the road it should look like a barrier (I hope). This means one of us won't always have to be here to keep a vehicle in the driveway.

The final count was 7 neighbors lost. There was a lot of misinformation and confusion right after as you might imagine.

It is impossible to drive around here right now. The disaster spectators are causing us to drive 5 mph down our road. We live about 5.5 miles in and it takes 45 minutes to get to the intersection. Sometimes they just stop so they can take pictures. I am so happy our destruction is so entertaining.

Supplies are flowing much faster now to those still in serious need.

We have had a steady flow of unsolicited contractors and lawyers come by. Is it just me or does putting John 3:16 on a business flier make a person seem more like a scam artist? It has been my experience that people who over-sell their honesty are the ones that can't be trusted. I hate to feel that way, I am sure some of them are fine Christian folks, but it still seems they are trying too hard. It doesn't matter for us we will only deal with contractors that have been referred or thoroughly researched.

So sorry to hear of your situation; your family has my prayers as well as all those who have been affected by these severe storms :grouphug: So frightening to think how things can happen in a hearbeat.

Be well & safe.

:)
