LimeWire

ditto for me. Any program that even remotely resembles file sharing is cause for loss of internet priviliges. Limewire, Frostwire, anything like that. UNH is stricter than MTSU, though it seems. If you get caught with it, they have the right to purge any files you can't prove you purchased from your computer as well as file charges for reimbursement. You sign a waiver at orientation saying you agree to this.

As I purchase most of my songs (and the ones I don't don't require a downloaded program), I have no problem with it.

I have no problem with Limewire/Frostwire other than the risk for viruses.

Even if they were ripped from CDs? CDs that you owned? Would you have to prove that you owned them first, like actually show them the physical disc?

yep. you don't have to do it instantly, though. I think you have like a week to produce a hard copy of a CD or mix CD. the rules are really complicated. So I'm just going to stay away from limewire and I won't have to worry about it.

Call me old school...but CDs are where its at...lol. The only time I would use an MP3 is if I go running or lifting but I do neither

Agreed, and most of the artists I listen to are the exact same...You can't buy a Sopor CD just download as its half the experience, the artwork of the booklet makes the whole thing complete (even Anna-Varney has said about this...though she calls downloading "the cheap thrill" way haha). Plus I love having the CD, I've only ever downloaded one CD (Cruxshadows single) and I hate the fact I don't have the CD in my collection haha.

heya i use pirate bay. It's down at the moment but yeah thats pretty god. You need to download a thing called utorrent to get the files to work. It's good

hope this helps
x

P.s limewire is really bad. It attaches viruses to the files

How can limewire be illegal? If it was illegal it would have been shut down by now.

It's legal but people just abuse the privileges. It's illegal to download the music for free, even if you are not selling it, you know.

You're basically stealing someones work.

Limewire is most definitely illegal. You're basically stealing the singer's work since you aren't paying for it. That's why Napster was shut down and changed into a site where you pay for music, like iTunes.

Are you talking about just the music or limewire in general?

if you don't feel comfortable using limewire or torrents, livejournal has a TON of music sharing communities. they even have genre specific communities if you're really into a certain genre.

That is true...most people don't think about it because major labels are known for making alot of money (well not as much as they used to) but indepdent labels its harder for...Dancing Ferret Discs is a great example, due to the amount of people downloading they had to fold the label because they couldn't handle the loses they had had...so 25 artists/bands were made label-less.

The only times I've ever downloaded stuff illegally is when the CD is:
1)Unavailable in the country I live and no imports are legally available (bootlegs/fakes are just as damaging as downloading)
2)The CD is out of print and the artist has expressed that they have no interest in ever re-printing it.

To get around University restrictions use Rapidshare.

Getting around University restrictions to download music is not illegal.

Um...yeah it is. Those are the RULES. If you find a sneaky way "around" them. You are breaking the rules.

Nope. Unis will block certain programs and ports so nothing can use them. It can stop people from playing games online or downloading legal music or programs.

If there is a specific rule that states no downloading music, then downloading ANY music that was not purchased through iTunes or Rhapsody or whatever is against the rules.

Don't use a hypothetical. It's well known that most Unis say its against the rules to download music that is part of the RIAA but the way some Unis stop that is by doing what I said.

I didn`t use a hypothetical. I said that if the University has a specific rule, which they said it did, then downloading ANY music that you did not pay for is against the rules and could get in trouble.
