Like Rapunzel, I have a dream!

It cost me $800.00 to have Mickey make an appearance at my wedding so keep the costs in mind. Nothing is ever free.

As someone who works at a famous landmark/tourist destination in guest relations (no, not Disney!) my suggestion would be:

-Call Guest Relations. If you are going to get any kind of pixie dust, this is where it would come from.

-Explain your idea to them. Maybe not that you want Mickey to hand you the balloon but that you were wondering if it could be pre-arranged with any cast member, or just say your family will all be there or something. Then add that "if there was anything else magical they could do, it would make it so much more special". But don't be pushy about it.

Where I work, people call ALL THE TIME asking for special experiences. We hear every sob story, every special moment. And most of the time we wish we could help them, but we can't. Because then we'd have to do it for everyone who just calls and asks for it.

HOWEVER, the people who call and tell us they've got something special planned on their own and if we could do anything to make it more special, we jump all over it.

Just a suggestion from my POV!

Contact local news and tell them your story and that it would make a good 10 second filler toward the end of the news. Then contact Guest Services in person the first day you get there and tell them you would like to do this (on the second day) and then ask if the "local news could cover it" as you have contacted them. Hopefully Disney would respond to this with the chance of news being there. Any momentum you get from Disney, push toward the local media, and likewise for the media to Disney. Just an idea but sometimes you have to get creative and be quite the showman to make your dreams come true.

First...this is a super sweet idea and a wonderful memory to have.

Second...I second the buy 2 balloons and head to the meet and greet. I think the anticipation would be awesome on the walk, and the private reveal with Mickey would be great...not to mention the savings :)

Any way you do it will be great, and I wish you the best with your bundle of joy!!

The local news could give a crap about stuff like this. The only time Disney is mentioned is big news (new attractions, someone hurt/died on ride, and the marathon). Honestly, this all sounds way over the top.

I think its a little over the top too.

Op, I understand you only want positive feedback but you won't get only positive comments if you were to get social or local media involved. You never know how people will react and if you take your dream to the general public you are opening yourself up to opinions you might not want to hear.

That would be my concern, too. A FB site that was open for support would also be open to people who will not be kind in disagreeing with you.

Congrats on your pregnancy. I remember how exciting it is to be expecting for the first time and wouldn't want to burst your bubble. But I will mention that the happiest moment of my life to that point was when the US tech showed us that we were having our first daughter. It was a small, personal moment but it was absolutely magical and special. You may find at some point that you dont's actually need or want a big production.

This seems WAY more overdone than anything else. Talk about setting the stage for everyone and their uncle to start contacting the media to get free stuff from theme parks. Unless it's an incredibly slow news day, I can't imagine the local news hauling a truck and stuff out to Disney (who would need to give them permission to set up on Main Street and inconvenience all of the other Guests in the area at the time) for a 10-second spot on the news in a city where the OP doesn't even live.

This is the kind of thing that you tape on your own and then send to your local station when you get back home, with a note saying, "This is how we shared the sex of our child-to-be. Thought it might be a fun news bit." and see what happens. Or you put it on YouTube and hope it goes viral and Good Morning America picks it up or something.

Disney doesn't care if there's a chance the news will be there. They get enough news coverage as it is. They're actually probably far more likely to do it for someone if it DOESN'T get plastered all over the news. Because that's when everyone starts coming out of the woodwork wanting them to do the same thing.

I guess what gets me is you want to pre-plan a magical moment.
I would call Guest Relations and tell them you'd love to find out the gender on main street (or where ever) and have them go from there...
It all just seems very over-the-top to me, but everyone's different.

Congrats on the pregnancy!!!! And remember, if you have more kids you'll have to do the same for them ;) ;)

That seriuosly made me laugh right out loud. Be careful just how high you set that bar. And yes, subsequent kids WILL notice.

OP, as the parent now of 1 child in college, and another headed that way this fall...... if you're thinking of spending any sigficant money on this...... do yourself a favor and put it in a college account for your child instead.

Again though, congrats. It's a very exciting time.

What about one of those Orlando companies that make special moments for people? I don't know what any of them are called but I remember reading about them a while ago.

Are you booking your trip yourself or through an agent? If it's an agent I would try Dreams Unlimited and ask to work with Theresa. (Dreams is the sponsor of the DIS and Teresa is on the Dis Podcast team.) This seems like something that she'd be into helping with.

Agreed.

The news might get involved for a "Help a child battle cancer" kind of thing or for a really remarkable special interest story of some kind... but for a gender reveal? No. The only people who care about that are the parents (and possibly grandparents).

I absolutely agree. There is beauty in simplicity and in the small moments. My husband and I loved that private moment when we found out the genders of our children. But, then again, we don't feel the need to make everything an event.

As far as calling a news station? Please. Babies are born every day. Genders are revealed every day. It's not newsworthy.

What happens if the sonogram is ambiguous?

I suppose that you will do what you feel you need to do. But if you go ahead with this big production, I can't wait to hear what you have planned for the baby shower.

ITA. I think it would be sweet to find out the gender in the MK, but no reason to involve anyone else. It would be just as special to open the envelope together in private somewhere and then go celebrate. Frankly, I think the scenario in your head would be disappointing IRL.

Exactly what I was thinking. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Although an interesting idea and I appreciate the thinking, I don't plan to contact any type of media.

IF we do anything with this, I'll be sure to share AFTER. We've had many amazingly magical moments on our Disney trips in our lives and maybe I was hoping for this to be another magical memory for us in Disney. Yes, it'll be magical whether we find out on Main Street or on a table in the doctor's office.

DH and I haven't booked anything or talked dates other than "some time in April" as we'd be able to find out in March and if the baby is kicking too much, we'd have time before the trip to catch a picture- my OB office is great with that. I'd be ok with waiting if I knew we'd be finding out in our favorite place in the world.

I don't see this as some "over-the-top" attention seeking thing. We've mentioned this to my very excited parents and sister who will be first time grandparents and a first time aunt and planned to mention it to DHs family if we do it...we don't expect any of them to come but if they do, awesome! If not, they'll find out through pictures. I am not planning on asking Disney to shut down part of Main Street and beg guests to watch (not that anyone has said anything like that, just wanting to be clear). This is something I hope to have one photopass photographer snapping pictures of, a ballon CM, and if possible, a CM and Mickey. I do not think Mickey could come out during his meet and greet times to do this. Thus, "dream".

"Renting Mickey" is not something I was planning to do as I don't believe this is something that would need more than 10 minutes. But if that's what Disney came up with, and I had him for an hour I'd be sure to ride Dumbo with him. :-P

And again, I will suggest ... the Mayor of Main Street. Because that suggestion seems to have gotten missed, and I think it would be exactly what you're looking for.

I like that idea. He's right out there just LOOKING for interactions. This sort of thing would seem right up his alley.

I also think the Mayor of Main Street would be perfect for the job.
Also wanted to suggest that if you are staying at a WDW hotel you could call hotel services and see if they can help you or at least steer you in the right direction.

Good luck whatever you decide to do, keep us informed. I love the idea.

Karen :)
