Like Daddy, Like Daughter

1. I did Go-Carts at the age of "10" or "11".
2. Carts were hand-made with
. . . bare tube frames and no body shells.
. . . crates for a seat and a bed-pillow for comfort
. . . wheels you could scrounge - usually not matching sizes or styles
. . . BIG Lawn Mower or Garden Tractor engines, some up to 12-hp
3. Races were held on oval dirt tracks in corn fields.
4. Had lots of fun on many weekends.
5. Unlike your daughter, we eased hot days with cases of Ice-Cold Stroh's.
6. AAH, the days with the Country Boys (and Farm Gals) !
7. UNTIL . . .
. . . reached around to grab ball cap that blew off my head.
. . . engine drive-chain caught my lower right arm.
. . . hand was pulled under the right rear tire.
. . . now have NO fingerprint on little finger and only a partial thumb print.

8. Lessons Learned:
. . . #1: Pain is not worth a generic hat.
. . . #2: Don't Drink-and-Drive (to this day, I still don't !!!)
Wow I'm surprised you didn't suffer more serious injuries! I've attached a video link of her first drive on a racetrack with her own car. Debut race May 25th.

OK, just to update, our granddaughter went out on the track last weekend for her first ever race with other people on the track. They always have two heats and a Feature every race night but that night the Feature was rained out. Savvy came in 1st in the 1st heat and jumped the start on a restart in the 2nd heat. She's not afraid to give it her all.

Its been almost 20-years, but still remember driving the Petty Race Car.
Since I knew the instructor, we "opened her up" to just over 140-mph.
I did that on a drag strip once, but not in an oval.
Glenlivet 12-Year Scotch calmed my after-drive nerves.

@TheRustyScupper Wish I'd known you like to go fast. I drag raced for many years and woulda got you up to 161mph
Same here. The new Mustangs didn't have a passenger seat, but my old Fox body had a race seat on the right with 6 point belts. We needed the 40 lbs to balance the car and make weight. And when I was just starting in Comp School, I needed some place for an instructor to signoff on check rides. They didn't like our first suggestion of a bucket and rope. :)

After I got my comp license, we would take people for rides during practice or warm up sessions.

Well they finally were able to have a complete race night. Savvy checked off her first spin, bump and t-bone (she was not the recipient of that one). That put her off her game so no checkered flag but good lessons learned.

Just like our Miata. Bumper covers and fenders were considered "wear items". We always kept spares in the shop.

The car looks mostly unharmed and able to race another day. She will get it sorted out!!
Yes the front had to have some tape down the cracks in the front spoiler and grill area because they are so flimsy as they are. $1000 CDN for a new body but no need for that at this point.

I am reminded of a line from “Slapshot”…. Something to the effect of “making it look mean!” 😁

Savannah's heat race. Battling for the lead and coming out on top with the win. Ended up 1-2-2 in her races this weekend.
She had such a good weekend that she is now hitting the pro Jr late model times and is moving up to the pros already.

This past weekend was her first in the new class (Pro Jr Late Model) so she decided to run scratch to get used to the new faster gears and the more experienced and faster racers. She did good, stayed in one piece and never let off the gas the whole way around the track the majority of laps. Doesn't matter how she finished, as long as she gets comfortable in the seat and used to now driving without Daddy her spotter in her ear (that class isn't allowed radios). Thanks to all who are following along.

Well the season is over and Savvy lost some confidence after she was sent to the higher level of her class due to her speeds, and she could no longer have ear buds with her dad coaching her. Still she finished 9th in the Pro Jr late models. We're proud of her. (Facebook promo https://www.facebook.com/share/p/Aa6jYMwyfKuaPkJm/)

PS her dad has sold his Renegade truck and is building another Modified race car with Jr Handley again for next season.
