Like a Bad Meal (V Keeps Coming Back) - THE END! 1/12/09

PHEW! I haven't missed anything!! I'm FINALLY catching up on TR's this morning...well, for the next 15 minutes or so and then I have to catch up...GULP...housework...before our double-header soccer game...

Just checking in!! LY!!

Hello? Anyone still here?

Sorry folks – life got incredibly busy for a while there and the trip report resides in a fairly low slot on the priority list.

But the good news is, life is returning to some sense of normalcy and I’m writing again!

Before I get back on track, though, I have some updates to report on this year’s WDW trips:

• Sadly, thanks to school project/paper deadlines, I’ve had to opt-out of the annual Adults Only Food & Wine Fest.

• The Halloween/MNSSHP trip has been reduced to a single night, but we’ll pay a visit to the Food & Wine Fest the next day. It’ll be a quick tour, but at least we’ll get there.

• Dec.’s long weekend is also reduced to a single night, due to a change of school for Leo. They have a far less lenient attendance policy than his old school did, so we’ll need to keep this to a weekend.

• NEW! The new school also clebrates Thanksgiving with an entire week off… so we decided to spend it in WDW! Believe it or not, Gramma suggested this. More details as we get to that trip.

• Leo and I are headed to WDW this coming weekend, mostly to catch up with our good friends, the sharkB8HooHaHa family, but also to enjoy cooler temps and low crowds. Also because I’m in dire need of a break from reality.

I can’t guarantee any thorough reporting on some of these short trips; there just aren’t enough hours in the day! But I’ll at least try for a short recap on them and promise to write at more length about the longer trips.

Like the August one. From which I so abruptly departed just now. Let’s get back to it, shall we?

When I last left off, Leo and I were bussing our way back to SSR from a rainy morning at the MK.

Look, no rain!

2793672217_5619ecb25f.jpg

2793670671_d276473f65.jpg

Moments later, it was raining again.

I don’t remember whether it was at the bus stop, on the bus or at SSR, but somewhere along the way I spoke with Lauralee on the phone. I also can’t remember where she was when we talked – on the road, checking in, at her room??? But I do know this: after I called for our room number, Leo and I got in line to order some lunch. And next thing I knew, there was LL giving us hugs! It was SO good to see her again.

I think her DH and DS were either at the pool or on their way to the pool, and we agreed to meet out there after lunch.

Let me tell you about that lunch. I went in with very, very low expectations. My prior experiences with Artists Palette were pretty abysmal: an overly-fatty roast beef sandwich in Aug. 2007 and an equally carppy turkey sandwich in Jan. 2008. :crazy2:

This time, I steered clear of the sandwiches altogether and went for the house salad with chicken.

!
!

It was beyond delicious. A pretty mix of greens with candied cranberries, some nuts, grilled chicken, apples and the most amazing vinaigrette. I’m sorry – I know I’m not doing it justice and I’m likely leaving out some critical ingredients, so just take my word for it: the Saratoga House Salad with Chicken is DA BOMB! :thumbsup2

Leo had a hot dog. It was limp and rubbery. Sort of gray-ish in color. Bleh. But he liked it.

After lunch, we headed out to find our room, crossing the High Rock Springs pool area to get to the Springs section. I spotted LL on our way over; it had stopped raining then started again, but she convinced me to go get swimsuits on and come back to the pool for a bit. I figured what the heck – it was warm and we’d get wet either way, may as well enjoy the facilities, right?

Over at the Springs, I pulled my car over from the bus stop to the elevators, scoring a front-row spot. Woo hoo! Grabbed the couple bags still in my car and headed on up… all the way up to the top floor… and a mere 10 steps from the elevator! Opened the door and… NO SMELLS! NO SCARY NEIGHBORS! NO DIRTY ROOM! :cool1:

2794525228_7fa74acc2e.jpg
2793678843_97febd74f5.jpg

It was, however, an odd room. See where that connecting door is? Right behind the table and chairs? Doesn’t seem very convenient if you actually wanted to use both rooms as a 2 bedroom villa. My studio also came with a little sumpin’ extra:

2793680045_d1dbc6c049.jpg

That’s a tiny extra closet next to the front door. With a short shelf.

It was strange, but a nice extra – Leo’s clothes went in there, while I used the full closet with long, tall shelves next to the vanity area.

Here’s another oddity of that room:

2794531358_ca6a396c91.jpg

See how low the towel ring is? It made the towel lay across the vanity top instead of hanging freely from the ring.

Also, the hook on the back of the door was really low.

I initially though it was a handicap-accessible room, but it had a regular tub/shower and no other indication of special design. Just low-hanging hooks, shelves and towel rings.

Holy carp, was it a Little Person room?! And, if so, should I have been offended??? I may be vertically-challenged, but I’m not that short. Hmmmppphhh.

Anyway, the room was great, even the view. Despite the rain.

2794532474_996ef86e31.jpg

FM liked it.

2793673639_3d451e67c7.jpg

I may have called for the bags, or I may have waited till later. Not sure. But I know that Leo and I got into our swimsuits and headed back to High Rock Springs. In the rain, natch.

Sure enough, LL and family were still there and I got to see my buddy Michael again, and finally got to meet LL’s DH Tony! Tony is a great guy. Really. Within minutes of talking, I felt like I’d known him for years, just like I did with LL when we first met. They make a great team and I’m so glad I got to spend time with them! :goodvibes

Leo and Michael pretty much picked up where they’d left off back in Jan., only this time with some swimming added into the mix. Poor Michael – he’d broken his arm mere weeks before this trip and no one was sure he’d even be able to swim. But thanks to the awe-inspiring power of Google, I found these neato cast covers online and LL ordered one for Michael. It was great! Hopefully, she’ll jump in here and tell you more about it, but I was just thrilled to pieces that my buddy would be able to get some pool time in.

2812084034_76c633560b.jpg
2812091168_d13be1852a.jpg

Now, about that pool.

Dudes, it was COLD. Way too cold for V. I got in up to my waist and said “Forget it!” All that rain from Fay, coupled with cloudy days and cooler nights, was wreaking havoc with the heating system I guess. Leo and Michael were braving it, but I needed to warm up. LL suggested something from the pool bar… and she was right-on! What I wanted was something to warm from the inside out, but scotch just didn’t sound right for a poolside drink. Instead, I had some kind of grown-up lemonade-y thing. I have no idea what was in it, but it was good – not too sweet, just enough sour – and it warmed me up nicely!

So did the hot tub. We all spent some time going back and forth between that and the pool, which worked pretty well. Still, in the rain.

At some point, we’d all had enough and headed back to our respective rooms to clean up and get ready for the evening’s festivities: more reunions!

Leo watched a movie whilst I got showered and changed. I figured he could take a shower later, when we got back. I mean, we wouldn’t be that late with a bunch of young kids in tow, right?

As I pondered my clothing choices, I kicked myself squarely in the behind for not thinking about the temperature ramifications associated with TS Fay. Read: it was about 15 degrees cooler than normal outside, and about 40 below inside. Or so it felt, anyway. And all I’d packed were shorts, T’s and sundresses. I went with a sundress, saving the T’s and shorts for park days. I also donned my new poncho for the walk over to Artist’s Palette. For the first and only time that trip. It sucked! It blew all over the place and kept letting rain in through the sides. My jacket worked MUCH better. TFI.

Why were we heading back to Artist’s Palette (AP) you ask? To meet our friends for dinner! The original plan had us eating dinner on oour own, then meeting up at the pool later. The rain scratched that idea. Instead, we would meet up at the Turf Club Lounge at SSR, which featured a living room-like atmosphere. And. A bar. :teeth:

But LL and I had both dumped our dinner ADRs for that night and met back up at AP instead. Leo and I got there first and snagged a table while LL and Tony went up for their food. Michael stayed with us at the table, where he and Leo reprised last year’s AP fun:

2794534322_48822c87e6.jpg
2793688663_fae903e03f.jpg

Leo had mac & cheese. With grapes. Lots of them. He loved the grapes. He told me so. He told Michael, too. And asked Michael if he’d like a grape or three. Michael’s response was one of the funniest moments I enjoyed that trip:

“No thanks – I like junk food on vacation.”

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

And who doesn’t, really?!

Continued in next post...

So we were all eating, talking about whatever, when I see a familiar face pushing a stroller into the dining area…

T!!! :yay:

Dinseyland_Mama, Tracy or just T. With her kiddos Maddie and Evan, and her DH Andy and her dad Waldo. Many hugs flew around the table and the kids all settled in together. They cracked me up with their shenanigans.

2793692415_3b59f6c7e9.jpg
2794538436_a29392c028.jpg

And Leo continued to sing his praises of the Magical Grapes, offering them to Maddie, Evan and probably T, too. Must’ve been some seriously good grapes.

While we ate and talked, Andy and Waldo worked their magic on Tony, convincing him to join them at a cigar bar in Pleasure Island I keep wanting to call Fuego’s. I’m 90% sure that’s wrong, but I called it that the whole trip, so I will here too. Before long, the guys headed out for their no-girls-allowed night on the town. I didn’t get to chat much with Andy or Waldo over dinner, but I’d get to know them later in the trip.

Us ladies, meanwhile, headed our brood down the hall toward the Turf Club Lounge (TCL). And this happened:

2793692715_4f868a38c3.jpg

How stinking cute are they?! Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that’s when the Talk first started. The Talk of future weddings. At Disney World. Made possible by DVC membership. LL and I were preaching to the choir, but figured that information could help T in her quest. Her quest for points. We could only hope Tony was doing a good job talking DVC up to Andy. ;)

Our group converged (yes, converged) on the TCL and the rest of the night is something of a blur. We found a table for us and a patch of carpet for the kids and let them enjoy some un-structured play time.

2794542816_2d8bc57f4d.jpg

The ill-fated game of Uno.

Us, too, really. We ordered up some cocktails and T tried something new: a Champagne Mojito. It smelled really good! And T said it tasted equally good… the first time, anyway. :scared:

T and I managed to remember our Flat Focker Friends, who enjoyed cocktail hour, too:

2793696633_5cc1703548.jpg

And we got one of the kids (Leo? Michael?) to take this hideous picture of the three of us:

2793697881_b529086ce3.jpg

I’m sad to say that, until I get really, really proficient with Photoshop, this is the sole image of the three of us form this trip. Urgh. :sad2:

At some point, we’d managed to clear some people out of the lounge and we moved to the sofas. And changed the TV from the Weather Channel to cartoons. And ordered more drinks. And allowed our kids to run around somewhat wildly.

And.

We didn’t care.

Okay, we did care, but no one was getting hurt and the kids needed to burn off steam as much as we ladies needed to bond. Now, we talk via email, IM or phone at least once a week, usually more. So how we found so much to talk about that night, I’ll never know, but we talked and talked and talked and talked. It was just like hanging in your best friend’s living room.

If your best friend made you pay $12 per drink.

It was a fantabulous night and I’m so, so glad we made it happen! :grouphug: I was even happy about it when Leo and I got back to our room (after walking through the rain) and he complained that he was itchy from the pool water… at 11:30pm!

Shoot.

Leo goes to bed at 8pm most nights. This was WAY late for him! But we really had to get that chlorine off before bed, so I managed to pull myself together and help him get showered and into bed. We had an early morning ahead.

Which was not part of The Plan.

Before we changed the TCL TV to cartoons, we’d been keeping an eye on the Weather Channel. And it showed the next day – which LL and I had planned to spend at Typhoon Lagoon – as a total washout. T convinced us to make it to AK for rope drop with her instead. I’d also planned to meet up with DisneyJo and cmp1111, also known as CE, at Typhoon, so I got T to text CE and let her know about the change in plans. I’d call Jo the next morning.

:rolleyes1

Next: Curse of the Disney Mojito

I don't have time to multi-quote as I'm off to work in a few.

But...all I have to say is...

Mojito??? :faint:

Great update honey.

Great update - everyone looked like they had a blast, kids and adults!!

And SSR... you're making me want DVC extra bad now!! Look forward to hearing how you like it there.

Hmmmmmmm:confused: ..... adult beverages in the evening and rope drop in the morning. This doesn't sound like a promising combo. Haven't you been down that road before?!;)

Hello? Anyone still here?

Oh, heck yeah. :goodvibes

again!

Before I get back on track, though, I have some updates to report on this year’s WDW trips:

• Sadly, thanks to school project/paper deadlines, I’ve had to opt-out of the annual Adults Only Food & Wine Fest.

OK! Sorry about the short trips, but the Thanksgiving thing sounds great!

Leo had a hot dog. It was limp and rubbery. Sort of gray-ish in color. Bleh. But he liked it.

Eeeewwww. But I'm glad he liked it!

Leo watched a movie whilst I got showered and changed. I figured he could take a shower later, when we got back. I mean, we wouldn’t be that late with a bunch of young kids in tow, right?

Now, even I can't believe you believed that one. :rotfl:

It was just like hanging in your best friend’s living room.

If your best friend made you pay $12 per drink.

Thanks, now I'm spitting Diet Pepsi on my keyboard. :rotfl:

Great update and pics, V. I'm so jealous of all the Focker Meets you had! You sure you don't want to come up in 18 days???

I have a small group of girlfriends that I met online as well and we can talk for hours when we all manage to get together in person. :) I love the junk food line that Michael said. That's too cute and sooooo true! LOL!

Hideous? I think not!

Great update V! I don't reply often but I'm always reading and definitely always enjoying! :thumbsup2 :cool1: :goodvibes

Still here!! Great updates. Sorry to hear that your school stuff and Leo's threw a monkey wrench into plans but glad to hear that you've added a new trip and will still make it to F&W! So many things to comment on:

I like junk food on vacation too!!! :rotfl:
I also like grapes so will have to check on this magical variety!
The kids are too cute- I hope a Disney wedding is in your future!
How cool is that cast cover? Google is definitely your friend-- amazing what you can find on there!!
Sounds like you guys had a great quiet evening hanging out (with $12 drinks)!
The mojito is cursed!? :scared1:
Saratoga Springs looks nice!

Loved the update V!

I miss FF2008. Waaaaaaaaa.

I'm officially jealous. :headache:

Nice! :thumbsup2

Hey, little people need rooms in WDW too.

:rotfl2: Classic Michaelisms!

Yes, Leo was a grape pusher that evening. But, in his defense - they were pretty fantastic grapes. ;)

While we ate and talked, Andy and Waldo worked their magic on Tony, convincing him to join them at a cigar bar in Pleasure Island I keep wanting to call Fuego’s. I’m 90% sure that’s wrong, but I called it that the whole trip, so I will here too.

I didn’t get to chat much with Andy or Waldo over dinner, but I’d get to know them later in the trip.
Ah, yes... Waldo got to know my dear friend Vi. As in Violet. Because Waldo decided V looks more like a Violet than a V. :sad2: But he loves you just the same.
