Lightning bugs/fireflies

I just saw one out the bathroom window a few nights ago......P

I've seen them in both PA and NJ, and VA too.

On my last Orlando trip we kept seeing these strange mating, bugs flying around. It was September, and they were everywhere. Does anyone know what they are called? :sunny:

You are talking about "love bugs" and they are abundant in South Alabama and parts of Florida.

It's a good idea to wash your vehicle after a trip..those suckers can mess up a car.

thank you, lol!:sunny:

The love bugs are kind of creepy!:p No pun intended!;)

When I was a kid (Texas in the 70s) I would see them all the time in my backyard, I only live 10 miles from where I did as a child and I haven't seen any in years. :sad1:

Here in south-central KY we have TONS of lightning bugs! This year we've had more than ever. We litterally have hundreds of them in the yard every evening. We have some pastures around us that have hay (and weeds, lol) about 2 1/2 - 3 ft tall. The ligtning bugs must live all in that because every evening those fields just light up, there's so many lighting up at once that it's just a continual light four ft or so off the ground. Really incredible sight.

I know this is kinda gross, but when we were kids in Pa. We use to catch ligtning bugs and squish there lights on our clothes so they would light up. When I got older and realized exactly what we were doing it liked to gross me out. EWWW! I do not remember seeing lightning bugs here in Lakeland Fl. though. I don't think love bugs and lightning bugs are the same thing either.

Yes! They have them in Orlando.

We have them here in Tennessee also. I wa standing on the back porch last night watching the little guys flicker and disappear. It is just so restful.

:smooth:

I had them growing up in the northeast. When DH and I married they were in the Chicago suburbs. We moved to Missouri, and I did not see them (may just be the area we lived.) Then in Utah for many years, we were without them. We moved to the Houston area - I do believe your DH is correct about pesticides in some areas. If you went out to the country area, they existed in the Houston area, but not where we lived - everyone I know had an exterminator there.

Here in North Carolina we have tons of them and we love them!!!
The first night in our home we ran outside and watched them for hours.:teeth:

Gosh, I haven't seen a lightening bug since we moved from Illinois in 1969! I am glad to see that they are still in so many states, tho'. We used to pull the backs of them off and put them on top of our ring finger so they would be a glowing ring. Like you say, when we got old enough to realize what we were doing, we just left them alone to float through our yard all summer. What a wonderful childhood memory.....:)

Have plenty in Virginia, just had one come into the office tonight with a co-worker.

The Neighbors and I were just commenting on how many we have this year. It seems they are everywhere, I can't imagine living somewhere that didn't have fire flies or lightning bugs. Its just not summer without a mayonaise jar full of the little critters.

We very RARELY see them here in the NW corner of Florida. When we do it's like, "What was that? A lightnin bug?" Although I can spot one occasionally, I don't think the kids have caught a glimpse of one yet! They soo too many pesticides on the cotton fields have destroyed them. Maybe they are more plentiful donw in south florida, though?
