Lighting in Animal Kingdom Lodge Rooms

Based on trip reports I have read, the lighting is very low in the AKL rooms. DH always reads before bedtime and I am afraid he won't be able to see well enough to do this. Can anyone confirm if this is still true of the AKL guest rooms? Thanks!

I also like to read before bed and found the lighting in the room to be quite dim. During the daytime with the curtains open it is managable but at night it's another story! I was able to manage, but it was somewhat of a strain. I think I'd bring a brighter bulb with me! I seem to remember a post about someone requesting a brighter bulb from housekeeping and having difficulty getting one.

It couldn't hurt to bring a few brighter bulbs, or to get some if you make a grocery store trip. You can certainly read with the lights there, but if you are used to something brighter, it could be annoying. I was too tired to read for more than 15 minutes & it was okay for me.

If accurate lighting for makeup is an issue, plan on packing a makeup mirror as well!

Maybe our house is dark or something but I found the lighting in the rooms fine. I read all the dark posts and when we got there, I actually thought it was really light, I'd set myself to see a dark room and it wasn't. We even had a light bulb missing, which housekeeping promptly replaced. I found it fine to read or do anything in, at night we didn't even turn all the lights on in the room.

I need to get my eyes checked. I read the subject line as "lightning" in AKL rooms I thought there was a problem with lightning strikes at the hotel. Geesh.

Now you can see why they gave me the tag that they did.

the room is the dark walls and the bulbs are only 53 watt. Had to take the information packet we got at check in to the bathroom sink where the lighting was much better so I could read it. ( I know, I Know I am getting old)

The lighting for evening reading is just fine, as long as you aren't trying to do it by the sink. My DH seemed to have no problem reading in the throne room though

There are lights by the beds like in all the resorts, and they are more than adequate for reading. I want to think in our room there was a lso a floor lamp located adjacent to the oversized chair. I think the room is actually more bright than it appears, and your perception is thrown off by the very dark, oversized furnishings.

My only lighting complaint was at the sinks. It was fine for brushing hair, shaving, teeth, etc., but very dim for makeup. I really hope they will either install lighted makeup mirrors or a brighter overhead.

Have you thought about bringing one of those book lights? My husband uses one at night in bed. I swear the room's brighter with that on, than it is with our lamp!

I always take one of those booklights when we go, because I like to read before bed, and DH would like the lights out, so he can go straight to sleep. Works great... and then you don't have to worry with bringing lightbulbs or disturbing the animals on the Savannah!

Is the lighting exceptionally dark in the rooms with bunk beds? I've heard that complaint from WL posters but not from AKL. We're staying at both these resorts in October.

I did not think the rooms were overly dark. With the dark woods and darker wallpaper it may give the room a darker feel, even make it feel cozy! I would not call the room 'dark' however. Eh, I am the one also waiting for the villans themed resort...so maybe you don't want to ask me.

Booklights? I have found them at dollar stors and outlet stores like Ross and TJ Maxx without fail. Worse comes to worse Barnes and Noble will have them.

betterlatethannever, I must be getting ancient cause I thought the lighting was horrible and to read under it would be worse, that is bad for the eyes, I just stayed one night, loved it but thanks good I switched to the poly, my eyebrows needed a plucking. lol

My daughter and I had a savanah room the first week in July. I couldn't figure out what the lighting complaints were about because our room was fine and my mom had no problem reading. We were in a bunk bed room.

jennymouse, I was thinking the same thing! I don't bother with too much makeup in WDW anyway because it all ends up melting off my face once I hit the hot & humid air. I was more concerned about DH being able to read. Think I will just bring along a reading light for him. I myself don't care for brightly lit rooms so I will be fine.

I just got back from AKL and I came prepared! I brought a bright light bulb with me from home. I never used it. I wouldn't call the lighting there "bright", but I did not find it dark either. It was bright enough for me to read the paper by. If you are worried about it, bring a light bulb, or a reading light like you mentioned above. It's such a great place. I wish I were planning to be there soon again.

The only part of the room I thought was somewhat dark was in the hall, closet & bureau area.

I thought the post was about lightning in the rooms too!
