LIGHTHOUSE POINT

We are on a DVC charter preview cruise on the Magic (in a concierge 1BR cat 2b).

My overall impression is that if you love a beautiful beach day, you will be happy. Not a lot of chairs on the beach by the water so either get there early or get there late or get lucky and book a cabana. There are plenty of chairs behind the dunes but not much if any view. It’s not ideal but that’s how it is. There isn’t room for more chairs on the beach unfortunately.

Flies were not a problem. It’s breezy which really helps. We were told they fumigated after the disastrous first stops. Food was meh, but I feel the same about Castaway. It’s fine and was fly-free.

Took us 13 minutes to walk from the ship to the entrance. It was cloudy with a slight breeze. Not sure I’d want to do it in the blazing sun. They had cool towels at the end of the pier. Tram ride is about 15 minutes to get to the other side where all the things are (except family cabanas which are right by th ship and FAR from everything else). Still no signage once you get to the end. They give you a map, take a photo of it before you leave you cabin. It’s not hard once you get the lay of the land.

The bars have different drink menus. We found that Serenity bar had fewer options for frozen drinks. I also found they were pretty small and watered down. The bar by the family beach was better. Also the food by the family beach had more options and and soft serve. None at Serenity beach.

We were in a Serenity Adult Cabana. The cabanas are between the family beach and the adult beach. Our cruse is sailing at 50% capacity (not many kids) so it’s fine. But I think it would not be all that peaceful with a beach full of kids right next to the Cabanas. There are no chairs on the beach at the adult cabanas. All are behind the dunes where you cannot see the ocean, but you do have that small stretch of water just for Cabana guests. If you sit in your cabana you can see the water.

Overall the vegetation is going to take time to grow in. The plantings are new. It feels more like Aruba right now. The bike trails are not done, so no rentals. We skipped the hiking trail because we thought it might be buggy. The lighthouse isn’t much to see.

Shops close early as do bars. So I didn’t get to buy merch. We are back on Monday so I’ll shop. They had some cute stuff. The buildings look like concrete bomb shelters with some colorful paint. Not magical, but sturdy. No doubt it will look better in a few years when the vegetation grows in.

Clearly the island is not anywhere near done. The road dust from the trams is pretty bad and can get in your eyes. I assume they plan to pave the road at some point. Lack of sinage is rampant and the CMs don’t always tell you the right thing (they are still learning.). The kid splash area seems popular and we were told Scuttles Cove is open. Nothing for Edge or Vibe kids. It’s planned but not done.

It’s not Castaway lush. The walk is long but doable. Folks who are differently abled can sign up for a golf cart ride with guest services. But I was told the wait can be long. We had a great day because we 1) love the beach and 2) had a cabana. I think we would have been disappointed to have to sit behind the dunes (we are not rope drop kind of people unless it’s a Star Wars attraction.)

Looking forward to Castaway tomorrow and then back to Lighthouse Point on Monday in a family cabana.IMG_0705.jpegIMG_0702.jpegIMG_0710.jpegIMG_0711.jpegIMG_0725.jpegIMG_0729.jpegIMG_0728.jpeg

Thanks for the report! Happy about the fly situation. That makes it a lot more doable. This will probably be a one and done kind of spot for us - if I am going to be at the beach I want chairs where I can see the ocean and not a sand dune. But I am not willing to be a rope dropper to get one :)
Why was the cruise only 50% sold? That seems very low for summer.

All the cabins were sold but it’s mostly double occupancy. This is an DVC charter preview cruise Also because of the storms in Ft. Lauderdale area, some folks didn’t get in for the cruise (not sure how many - but definitely some).

Thanks for the report. I agree that having a cabana seems to be pretty important to having a great day on Lookout Cay, at least currently.

I'm surprised by how cheap many of the main area buildings look, given this is Disney. Like something at a strip mall or Taco Bell. That's not about them being ecological or cultural, because they could have done that nicely- it just looks cheap and generic. And the massive amount of concrete adds to that effect.

This solidifies my decision to not book this island. I'm paying way too much money, to not be able to sit on the beach and watch the ocean all day. Cruising is to relax, not stare at some beach grass. Thanks for the report!

The flies situation was definitely improving. I was on the inaugural and second visit flies were less noticeable. They still did attack the food but not in droves like previously. My thing is that if DCL knew about the flies during the preview sailing why didn't they fix it in time for inaugural. Someone in my cruise group did a what's app group chat and they said team members had a long meeting to fix the issues on the second stop.
They still need to work on excursions since I think some stuff still wasn't ready. Some nature part trails weren't open. Riding bikes path wasn't smooth. There are weight restrictions on the bikes that were never mentioned. People complained the pirate excursion was essentially a nature walk and few minutes doing pirate activity. Any port excursion meet up looks like it's on your own to get there and meet at the gathering tree.

Thanks for the info… forewarned is forearmed. Guess I will do like I did as a kid and bring a beach towel and sit/lay/tan/sleep on that 😂

It's not really summer yet - kids are still in school in a large part of the US.
Interesting comment. Wish there was a source that shows just when most schools let out. Google seems to indicate the end of May, but without attribution. The district I live in ended June 4. Seems the trend the last 25 years has been to start and end earlier. School started August 10th. When I was in school 60 years ago (yikes) we started the day after Labor Day and ended the second Friday of June. But they now take more time off during the school year. A week for Thanksgiving instead of just Thursday and Friday. A week for President's Day instead of one day, and every Thursday is a half day for students, the second half of the day is for teacher prep.

It varies by region. About half of the schools in the U.S. (mostly in the South) let out at the end of May and resume in mid-August. The other half (mostly in the North) let out in mid-June and resume at the beginning of September. Which is why DCL prices rise precipitously at the end of May and stay elevated until September, with a peak in pricing from mid-June to mid-August.

@kathi - were there benches at the tram stop? Or any place to sit down after the pier walk?

At the time you eventually got off the ship, what kind of wait was there for the tram?

I will say the area I use to go to gets out tomorrow
