Life’s too short...to never sleep in a treehouse! 8/27 TR is up! Link in siggie

Oh that would be fun!

I'm hoping we decide to move dates, or not, in the next couple of weeks as I'd love to do it before Visa announces Free Dining (assuming they do) as I think it's end of Feb/early March that they release it?

Right now is too early for airfare here. I track the rates to MCO pretty much year round and as it gets closer it drops a lot. Best deal right now would be $357 on Air Tran but it would involve 1-2 layovers and take up to 12 hours! BLEH. Hoping for the red eye, non stop, on Alaska on the way out. We will have enough miles to get half price on all our tickets so even if Alaska ends up being more, if the miles get it down we will go that route. Hoping to get them for low $200's but I don't think we will see those rates till April or May.

I think free dining is announced in Feb/March. I've read that some have received free dining PINs. I just got the 20/30/40 year round PIN. The PIN saves us more $$$ than free dining would, especially considering room category. Will free dining save you more?

I haven't booked air yet either. I'm hoping it comes down. I read somewhere that airfare drops when your dates are less than 6 months out. Fingers crossed!

I hope you're having a cocktail and birthday cake right now!

I had heard that too. I also know that Southwest doesn't even put up their fares (at all) until like 6 1/2 months out. Our trip, if it stays in Sept, doesn't have published fares on their website yet. :confused3

We have the 20/30/40 pin right now and just got another one last week. FD actually does save us more but that's due to being a group of 9 all considered "adults". Technically Eric will be 9 but since he turns 10 within 2 weeks of the trip it just seemed mean. He is listed as being 10 for the ressie. Both of the E's are very good, adventuresome, eaters and struggled with the kids menu last time. Heck they struggle with the kids menu everytime we go out and it's always a battle (yes you can order off the big menu, no you can't....lol) so this avoids that. FD saves us about $434, assuming of course that we added the DDP.

It probably is a wash to be honest as we'd order less food if we didn't do the DDP but this just makes it easy! And the kids feel spoiled.

If we upgraded our room then I'm sure the PIN would be better but we are booked at the standard room. For most people the PIN is better if you are staying deluxe I think.

My only fear is not having the nights available which is why, if we move, I want to do it asap. As you might imagine...it all revolves around sports.

:rotfl:

Having a lovely glass of meritage and sitting by the fire, it's been a lovely day!

exactly. The alaska fares right now are not even worth looking at!

Oooo...

Happy Birthday!!!

Glad I made it before midnight!

Thanks! And you did. Hours before actually in my time zone :thumbsup2

Ohhhhhh, (in my best Lydia Bennet voice): I long for a fire!

Happy B-Day!

BTW - sorry for the delay in replying to your PM - I'm going to send you a couple of things in the morning. For now, I gotta get to bed...alarm goes off in 5 hours & 15 min.

Happy Belated Birthday!!

I hope you get your trip dates worked out & they announce free dining soon!!

:rotfl: Lydia Bennet! You are about as not Lydia Bennet as I can imagine (well except for the headstrong part) but you will have fires! Soon (in the big picture of things).

I'm not sure that the gas fire "really" counts, we have one of each and really wanted them all to be wood burning but I'm so glad we have the gas one, it's come in super handy when the power goes out and for just flipping on any time we want. Nothing beats the sound and smell of a real fire though.

Happy B-Day!

No worries! I know you are crazy busy.

And...thanks!

Yes, a roaring, smelly good, real fir or cedar fire!! Ahhhh... with mulled wine or an espresso with a fleecy throw and the Good Book. Love that!!!

headstrong... ok, I concede. I am. at least a little.

well you know I only mean that in the most complimentary way!

I confess to often having my laptop by the fire with me...I did last night, with my wine. In the middle of the 19th wife right now...

I know you do!! If I weren't just a wee bit headstrong, there's no way I could have lived here for so long, or homeschooled for as long as I have.

19th Wife?? Explain....

19th Wife?? Explain....

Historical Fiction-------------------

Faith, I tell them, is a mystery, elusive to many, and never easy to explain.

Sweeping and lyrical, spellbinding and unforgettable, David Ebershoff’s The 19th Wife combines epic historical fiction with a modern murder mystery to create a brilliant novel of literary suspense.

It is 1875, and Ann Eliza Young has recently separated from her powerful husband, Brigham Young, prophet and leader of the Mormon Church. Expelled and an outcast, Ann Eliza embarks on a crusade to end polygamy in the United States. A rich account of a family’s polygamous history is revealed, including how a young woman became a plural wife.

Soon after Ann Eliza’s story begins, a second exquisite narrative unfolds–a tale of murder involving a polygamist family in present-day Utah. Jordan Scott, a young man who was thrown out of his fundamentalist sect years earlier, must reenter the world that cast him aside in order to discover the truth behind his father’s death.

And as Ann Eliza’s narrative intertwines with that of Jordan’s search, readers are pulled deeper into the mysteries of love and faith.

That definitely sounds very intriguing!! I will certainly look for it when I get back.

Ooh Cynthia, that book sounds really intriguing! I fully intend to curl up with a book and my fluffy pj's right after dinner. Unfortunately, we just burned through the last of our firewood. It's snowing out right now, and it would be the perfect night for a fire!

20/30/40 definitely saves you more when you stay deluxe. We were suppose to go in December also, but can't this year due to schedules, etc. So, my rationale was that if I can't do two trips we HAVE to book Grand Floridian Royal Palm Club for August. 40% off that ridiculously priced room. Talk about fuzzy Disney math :lmao:

I'm not familiar with the YC. What are the room categories? I did read that all YC rooms have full balconies, while the BC does not. That makes choosing the YC worth it IMO. Ahhh a glass of wine/champagne/beer/shot of tequila in the evening on the balcony after a long day at the parks is wonderful :cloud9:

I can understand why you'd just list Eric as 10. That kid's menu gets lame pretty quickly. But for my 6 yr old nephew, it's fine. I think in a couple of years, he'll hate it. Even now it's a stretch because he doesn't like pizza and the beef with macaroni leaves a lot to be desired :scared1: With a group your size, seems like the DDP makes life a lot easier.

Are there certain CS places you'd like to try?

I'm trying to be patient with the airfare. I'm going to wait until we get under the 6 month mark.

I need to get it back to the Library, it's overdue :(

I made the mistake of reading the Other Queen first, checked them out at the same time, and took longer to read it than I should and can't renew this one due to holds out on it. Oops!

It's very interesting and well written, I highly recommend it!

That is fuzzy disney math at it's best!

All the YC rooms do have a balcony or patio (ground floor) which was a big deal to me, part of why we chose it. So all you get for the upgrade to the Regatta Club is basically the lounge. It is the exact same room, just on a different floor.

Which, while the lounge sounds lovely, even with the PIN it comes out to another $75 pp, per night. We will definitely spend less than that on OOP breakfast and drinks lol.

If I were to upgrade it would be to the pool/water view instead of the club level (the no view club level is more than the pool view of course) but with 2 rooms...I just can't justify it for the full 7 nights. Esp since we upgraded at HRH!

They do have some amazing sounding suites. None of course sleep 9! If I had twice the budget and one less person, I'd go for the turret 2 bedroom suite. But I don't. :rotfl:

So we will just hope for an upgrade at check in and if not, a view that is not of a parking lot! I just need to figure out if we have a better chance of that by checking in "live" or online... either way I plan to be there early on check in day! As a grand gathering it seems, based on the YC thread, that we do have a chance of an upgrade so...we will see (fingers crossed!).

Last time we had both E's on the kids menu so did about half buffets which helped a lot and then chose places that had "better" kids menu's (Kona has fish, etc) and that helped as well.

For CS we will most likely be hitting all new places, going to just let that one go and take it as it comes. I think the only "for sure" CS place we know we will be eating at is Hurricane Hannah's. Beyond that I do want to try CHH, maybe Flame Tree (or do the Picnic in the Park), maybe WPE if we don't eat at Paradiso 37...who knows! With the heat and hopping I need to be flexible so just plan to have a list of the top places in my book and we will pull from that, it's what we did last time and it worked well.

A Give a Day mini report!

When I first learned about Give A Day (thanks to Jeff who heard about it really early) I thought it would be perfect for me to do. What a fabulous idea! At the time it didn’t occur to me that the kids could do it too. As it finally went live and I started to look at the options, and reading about what other folks were doing on their PTR’s and TR’s I knew I wanted something all four of us could do which definitely limited things.

I settled on volunteering at a 4H event. I’ve had little to no exposure to 4H and though it would be great for the boys to learn a little bit about it. The event…

A Model Train Show!

At

Our local fairgrounds!

Proceeds from the event went to support 4H.

We were assigned to be door sentries. Meaning that we kept people from going in and out the side arena doors during the show unless they had the proper ID.

In reality…no one tried to go in or out that didn’t have the proper ID and those that did fell into 3 categories.

  • People who wanted to go out to smoke (1)
  • People working the show who had a stash of lattes in their car and would go out to refill (1)
  • People who wanted a quicker exit and weren’t coming back (4-6, total)
Upon arrival and check in we were greeted like this

It’s our Disney Family!

They made quite the fuss over us, asking the boys when they were going and generally chatting about Disney. One of the head volunteers has an April trip planned to DLR and the boys chatted about their August trip (which is what they think the vouchers are for).

They were so cute, the people who ran it, so nice! They told us we “looked” like a Disney Family. Whatever that means :goodvibes Lots of chat about the Happiest Place on Earth. There was one other "Disney Family" there, working the opposite side of the arena.

The volunteer coordinator took us to our station (set of side doors) and explained what we needed to do. She also said that as long as 2 people were at the door, the other 2 could wander the show as much as they wanted! Which was a blessing. Talk about temptation, 2 little boys and all those trains. The idea of making them be by the doors for 3 hours and then going to look at the show did sound like an exercise in patience. Mine!

Oh wait, I mean 3 little boys! We have a Lionel ourselves and it was Lionel heaven. And then some.

So for three hours we hung out “guarded’ the door, chatted about Disney and wandered the show to our hearts content.

A few pics.

the only train I saw that was similar to our set but this is a smaller version

IMG_3774.jpg

We did look at transformers as we need a new one for ours but Jeff deemed them too pricey. I have no frame of reference to say whether they were or were not but it was kind of neat to see that no one had a train just like ours out! (An O gauge Amtrak passenger train). Some of the set ups were AMAZING but the two things the boys liked the most? A display where you could man the switches, couple and uncouple trains and switch tracks and a simulator where you got to drive a train and then make it stop without hitting someone (a train safety/keep off the tracks exhibit). Both boys spent at least an hour at those 2 spots!

I admit, it was easy and fun and I’m not sure we felt like we really “earned” the vouchers but it truly was a great organization to support and I have a feeling we will go to the train show on our own next year. On the way out, out of the blue, Eric informed the volunteer coordinator Nancy that he was a Cub Scout. They proceeded to recite the Cub Scout Motto together and then she shared the 4H motto with us which was pretty darn neat!

I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
my heart to greater loyalty,
my hands to larger service
and my health to better living,
for my club, my community, my country, and my world.

In other trip news.

As I’ve mentioned, we are considering moving our dates by 3 days. Much to-do has been made about our dates revolving around HS soccer.

Guess what.

She might not play HS soccer!

Volleyball is at the same time. And, at the moment, VB seems to be winning though she has said she doesn’t know which one she wants to do. We are all leaving it up to her. I have NO idea what not playing HS soccer will do for her club play, it all seems in flux. Which is ok.

Now. As best we can tell, VB has the same pre-season training/tryout situation and if so, no flexibility in dates. Jeff seems convinced it will not be a full 2 weeks. According to the district, tryouts for all fall sports start on the same day. If we can push our dates by just 3 days we will save $350-450 on the HRH portion of the trip so we both really want to move them, if we can. I want to move them before FD is announced if at all possible. I just don’t see us being able to move them though, much as I’d like to!

We had originally thought, if we had to, we could look at July (which doesn’t save a penny lol!) however it now appears Evan may have a July conflict of his own. He’s been asked to join the competition team at TKD. I haven’t decided yet if we are going to let him, but will need to decide today before they offer the spot to someone else. It would be great in so many ways and is definitely an honor but….we are heading into baseball season, he will be testing for his 2nd degree national black belt, he's already on the demo team and all that worries me a little Not to mention the cost of course! Although that’s not too bad. In concept it sounds very doable but....

The demo team is “maybe” going to a competition in Chicago in July, the Competition team is “for sure” going. UGH Chicago in July! I don't want to go to Chicago in July but more importantly I don't want Evan going. Which I'm going to have to face if we let him join. His fathers family is all back there and there is no way I could take him and not deal with seeing them, he wouldn't let that happen and I just don't want to deal with it! Not to mention the stress and wildcard of his dad hearing he is there.

But that's not a valid reason to not let him do it. UGH! It's stressing me out.

The dates fall smack in the middle of the potential weeks we could consider if we did move the trip to July, which wipes out a good chunk of that idea (and the concept of being there ON K's bday) anyway not to mention the fact that none of us want to go to WDW in July.

In other HRH news, it looks like Doug is for sure joining us for that part of the trip so we are excited about that. On one hand I’d love to have Sandie and Paul there too as it would bring the cost down quite a bit for us but on the other I really like the idea of 3 days with just Doug for brother and Uncle bonding time, it’s a different dynamic when Mom is there! Not in a bad way but just different. My parents are still considering joining us as well but they would probably get their own room. My mothers snoring....rival's Paul's. :rotfl:

Jeff made a very exciting point...if Doug comes for the HRH portion, which looks for sure at this point, I just need to add him to the ressie, than Jeff and I don't have to split up if our rooms aren't connecting. Uncle Doug can take all the boys and we will take K! Who hoo!

Next. To cake, or not to cake?

Wow! Lot's there! I was hoping for some news today on your Give a Day, and it looks like it really worked out to be a fun time. At the very least you learned a little about 4-H, and the E's learned a smidgen about service and volunteering.

I really can't speak into the high school sports thing, but it sure would be nice to save that $400!! Is there ANY way possible, she could follow you a couple days later after her event(s)? She's old enough right??

I think it's great Doug has decided to join up with you, and that it will be apart from from Paul and Sandy. If there's a different sort of dynamic thing going on, even if it's good and ok, some time for them to have that without the influence of the others is a good thing. I know with my sisters and I it is a TOTALLY different feel with my parents there. Not bad, just different.

Not splitting up in rooms is always a good thing. gotta keep the men happy! ;)

Sounds like a great GAD experience for the whole family! I felt like we hadn't "earned" our vouchers too... but my take on it is that our whole family got to participate and we talked a lot about why we were volunteering and who we were helping. I wouldn't feel bad. :goodvibes

I don't know how you can keep track off all the who, when, where of your vacation! It makes my head spin!! :faint: I hope it works out and you guys can settle on your dates before FD.
