Thanks you guys! I appreciate the answers even though it's not what I wanted to hear. I just did another 2 hour comb through with the gel but I got new combs so I'm hoping I got more. I got tons of nits (but less than last night) and two big bugs and two small ones that were hard to see, so I'm sure there were more live critters.

At least I know we're not alone! I cleaned, vacuumed, and washed yesterday and again today...I can't do that every day for two weeks though! I'll just follow behind DD and do whatever she touches. I like the idea of her sitting on a sheet too.

DO NOT use RID!!! Use the NIX! RID does not kill the nits. And yes they are crawling in her head. Just look you will see them.
The nits are a tiny clear teardrop and are hard to see!!! You need a light shining directly on her head.

I meant to mention that in my post above. I didn't want to do a second chemical treatment but finally did in the third week. Used Nix that time and was finally rid of them. So yes, I would also recommend Nix if you have to resort to a second treatment.

The instructions on the Rid say to do it again on day 10 (the shampoo). Do you mean a second treatment in addition to that one?

I think I'm going to try the conditioner tomorrow when we do the comb through.

I just can NOT believe there were still live lice in her head!! I was shocked.

Someone actually told me to do this and I was wondering if it works. If I can't get them out through conventional methods I might try it!

I got them a while ago..


1) Do mayo and Olive Oil. These will do the tricks, they can build immunity to shampoos.

2)Dont worry lice love clean heads

3) You MUST use a metal lice comb, The plastics do not work!!!!!

4) You must comb until you find nothing, and countinue that for 14 days after you find nothing( I comb everyday just to get out dandruff and most of my friends have them -obviously i dont go to their houses or use any of their stuff)

5. Remind your DD not to share anything

Dab Olive Oil all over their head, until it is in everyspot. Let it sit for atleast and hour, then lice comb their hair out, This is REALLY good for their hair and will make it soft. Also when combing, after everyone stroke, place the comb in a clear glass of water, this makes thing easier to see.

And until they get rid off them, keep them off couchs and they cant use pillows!

Lice can't survive more than 48 hours without a blood meal. They dry out and die. The eggs will go into a sort of dormant state if they are not on a warm body, but they can't survive more than 2 weeks without hatching and newly hatched nits need a blood meal within a few hours of hatching or they will die.

She sprayed our heads with OFF outside and said they jumped off our heads (she did that with the dogs for fleas too!) and she said she used bug spray and sprayed it on a comb and combed through our hair. (DH thinks this explains a lot! ) Anyone heard of/tried these things?

KLOUT, it's not a pestacide and it's wonderful stuff. It breaks down their outer skeletons and they can't feed or breed. You can retreat multiple times if necessary. It's over the counter, but sometimes you have to ask to have the drug store order it. Click here to go to company website to read more about Klout!

Now, you still need to remove as many of the nits(eggs) as possible. A mixture of half vinegar and half rubbing alcohol applied to the hair can help to loosen the nits. There is a better comb for lice removal on the market called the Lice Meister Comb.

There is some basic household clean up that many people just don't take seriously enough. The bedding, towels, dirty clothes, and any washable toys all need to be washed in HOT water. Any toys that normally hang out on the bed that can not be washed, must be placed in AIR TIGHT plastic bags for 2 WEEKS. Vacuum the matress, around the bed, the sofa, and anywhere else the child spends time lying around. There are some household pesticide sprays for lice that are somewhat useful. I say somewhat useful because so many lice have become immune to the pesticides that it's a bigger problem to get rid of them these days.

There is an alternate treatment with Mayonaise. I know it sounds weird, but it's usually pretty good. You coat dry hair all the way to the scalp with good old fashion full fat mayo....any brand will do, just no low-fat, no-fat, or Miracle Whip. After coating the hair and scalp, cover the hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap for 3 hours. Warm water rinse, and shampoo, still you need to remove the nits.

If this fails, call your doctor. There are options that are prescription, but one is really flammable and the other has potential neurological side effects. Maggie.....who normally gets paid to say all of this to Mommies.

I used olive oil and vinegar. Put the olive oil on and leave for at least 2 hours then rinse out. Shampoo and rinse with vinegar. Made my hair really soft and shiny and killed the lice. Of course you have to treat all the bedding & etc too...

I found this method by using Google and advice when I posted here. Works like a charm. I did it every other day for a few days, then once a week just to be sure all of the little suckers were dead.

Help again...I'm back! We did the olive oil on DDs hair and I've been going through it (dry) every night, we had 2 clear nights then last night I got off some live nasties and 5 nits - is this expected or do you think she's been re-exposed?

This is soooooooooooo frustrating!!

It's possible that you've just missed some - or she could have been re-exposed. Have you tried rinsing with white vinegar after you wash out the olive oil? I read that it helps keep the nits from coming back into your hair - they don't like the smell. (It makes your hair really shiny too!)

I would also highly recommend switching your DD to a good tea tree oil shampoo. This helps prevent re-infestation.

No I haven't tried the vinegar, do I just pour it on her head and then rinse it out?

Wow, freaking out! Our two daughters are in their first day of school today, and we all have (including DH) really long hair, and we all use each other's brushes. I can just imagine the disaster it would be for us to catch these things.

I'm posting now so I can refer back to it if I need it. We switched from a tiny private school to a big public school so I'm sorta dreading it, since it seems like lice has become so commonplace in schools, now.

And I tried on a hat at DSW last night (the shoe store) and all I can think now, is, great, is my head itchy because I'm reading a thread about head lice or did I just infect myself?!!!

Disneyrsh - DD had an outbreak in school last year, 2 classmate of hers had "the worst cases" the nurse had ever seen. The good news - DD did not get them! But at school she usually wears her hair (it's long and extremely thick) pulled back in a pony tail or braids and I've heard that's a good protective measure, that and put hair spray on it too. Something to keep in mind.

This summer, I have no idea where she got them! Can you get them at the pool somehow? None of her friends seem to have them...

Just rinse with the vinegar - will only take about a cup or so. Make sure you don't get it in your eyes - will sting really bad! Then just rinse it out. You'll still be able to smell it a little...


ETA: I got them myself last year. Never did figure out how- could have been at the gym, or the massage lady's... My DS9 got them about 2 months later - but he loves to have his hair buzz cut. So we just cut his hair really short and used the vinegar rinse. They never came back.

2 years ago my dd got them, from a girl who has a history since kindergarten of head lice......... it was the worst thing to go thru....we used vinegar and olive oil, we finally went out and bought a Robicomb at wal mart for 25.00 it was the best!!!!!!!!!!!! it makes a beep sound when it snags one, you then clean out the comb and keep on going. we also stripped her bed every am, bagged up all stuffed animals.good luck everyone for a lice free school year!!!!!!!!!
