Let's Talk Remodeling

I just wanted to post that I'm really happy with my new dishwasher. Growing up we never owned a dishwasher, unless you count the 4 kids. When I moved into my first apartment in 81 we had the standard cheapy dishwasher and they probably didn't work as well back then. When I moved into my house in 93 the dishwasher was out of date then but since it still worked, or so I thought, I never bothered replacing it. My new Kenmore dishwasher ACTUALLY WASHES the dishes. I've lived for 48 years without realizing that dishwashers actually clean dishes without having to pre wash them. :confused3

:thumbsup2 I hear ya. Glad you are happy. Now if I can just get my parents to replace the 1973 dishwasher in their house that they don't use because they say it wastes water, life would be good. lol I hate washing dishes in her tiny little double sink. She gets every dish & utensil dirty & refuses to use paper plates when we go.

Our mothers are probably the same age. My parents remodeled their kitchen about 20 years ago. They didn't get a dishwasher because they had never had one and it would take up valuable storage space. Sheeesh!!!!! Mom.....get rid of some of that Tupperware and Cool whip containers you never use and you would have plenty of room for a dishwasher. She also gets an extrordinary amount of things dirty just for a couple of extra people.:confused3

Well I am very excited about the recent progress. The walls are done (primed) and the hardwood floor is mostly in on the kitchen. The great room side we are going to wait to put the floors in until the cabinets are in. Right now they are all sitting there and we can't get to the floor. DH has to put the color up on the walls and they can start installing the cabinets tomorrow. That gives us tues, wed and thursday to get them in. The Siltstone people come on Friday.

That means we can take a mini trip to Mackinaw on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, before DH starts back to work the last week of Aug.

It will be a few weeks before the counter tops are in, but I am so excited just to be more "put together! I can get the food out of the spare bedroom soon!

DisneyPhd, so glad you are making progress. Its always a good thing. :thumbsup2

Bathroom is done except for some spackling and new paint. Not the greatest pictures, sorry.

I'm so envious of your trip!! :woohoo: You'll have to tell us all about it.

I'm glad you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's inspiring for those of us still somewhere in that tunnel. :lmao:

No progress here. Today, I want to try to just get some things tidied in the kitchen / dining room. Hopefully get the old stove cleaned so we can move it out of the dining room & get it listed for sale along with the old frig.

The old countertops are unscrewed & just sitting on top of the cabinets waiting for Silestone to call. DH won't be around next 2 weekends, so he did it early. No biggy.

I still need to get a new water filter system & a dispenser faucet in a matching finish. Hopefully before they deliver Silestone.

QUESTION: Do you paint before they install the new countertops? If not the whole wall, at least some of it? I'm thinking its easier than trying to tape off after. If so, I need to pick that paint color soon!!!

Miss Jasmine - what a difference! I love it. Congratulations.

Thanks. We try to go up every year. It is about 5 hours away and a fun place to visit. This year we are taking the bikes with us.

2 cabinets hung (on the wall over the sink.) Now 5 more on the walls to be hung, and the rest are on the floor. It looks good with the new paint. It is really a rather dark blue (think denim like.) A strange choice for kitchen walls I know, but so little of it will be seen and it matches the blue on the siltstone great. With the light maple cabinets it is coming together nicely.

Miss J, nice pictures. Very lovely!

I painted mine after the counters were installed. I needed to be able to see the big picture, KWIM? We purchased a roll of that brown paper from Home Depot and laid it down on top of the granite before we got started though.

Miss Jasmine, that looks great! At first I was wondering what kind of funky paint job/decorating you were doing behind those mirrors, and then I scrolled up to read your comments.

I would wait until after the countertops are in. Of course we didn't and when they installed the granite, the fit was so tight that they marked up the wall (our countertop dead-ends into a wall that we're not going to tile). So lucky us, we either live with the marks (not!) or we'll have to repaint.

I am a pretty happy camper tonight.

The cabinets are in. The counter tops are measured (3 week though before they will be in, and no sink until then.) Still the kitchen is looking good. DH is about 2/3rds if not more done with the hardwood for the whole project (the kitchen is done, but the great room still has a little bit.

The refridge is in place, but the microwave, oven and dishwasher still need to be in place.

So tomorrow we are heading up for a little trip to the great upper MI. We are brining the bikes and riding around Mackinaw Island, and a little camping with DH's parents in their trailer after.

A much needed break. DH has been working like crazy to get this project done this summer.

So it isn't done, but much closer and I am very happy. I will post pictures when we get more done.

If it wasn't for this tempary cap that feel out and my dentist being out of town things would be really good. ( I did manage to fix it back in place myself with some CVS dental glue kit.)

I can't believe it! We're back on track! All it took was for us to go look at new houses today, and my husband realized that we need to stay and make do with the best of what we have.

We spent the better part of an hour laying on our bathroom floor, trying to figure out the best way to remodel our master bathroom. Tomorrow I get started trying to work down our initial budget! :woohoo:

Wow!!

Were you considering moving?

Congratulations on getting the green light on the remodel!

Yeah for you!!!! :cool1: Nothing like the shock of new home prices to get them back in remodeling mode!!!

I really can't wait to see what you come up with! That is such a great big room, you'll really be able to do something wonderful with it!!:goodvibes

I've been reading this thread for quite a long time and really enjoy seeing everyone's pictures! Some great looking rooms on here!

I've been in remodeling hell. DH and I bought the house I grew up in and gutted the entire main floor, put on an addition, raised the roof, and installed all new windows and sliding glass doors. We moved downstairs into the 4th bedroom for over a year.
DH is a contractor, so he ran the job himself and subbed out a lot of work to contractors he knew and trusted and had worked with on jobs before. (carpenters, brick layers, electricians and plumbers)
DH raised the roof, installed the skylights, put on a new front porch roof , built 3 new roof peaks, and did all the gutters and downspouts and installed the new hardwood flooring on the entire main floor. (except for the master bath)

We still have not purchased and installed the countertops in our Master bathroom! It took me a year to find the granite I wanted and DH is unsure about it, so he's dragging his feet a little. I've never been more sure about anything! Also, I'm really thinking about going with vessell sinks. I just love the way they look. Anyone here have them and if so, do you like them??
