I grew up the same and yup, I do know of someone being sued for injuries. It split up my group of friends. One of my friends' parents sued another one of my friends' parents over a bb gun injury. Both kids were negligent, these were girls, btw and teens.
We had one cousin's wife sue the brother. She fell going up the stairs, tripped over her own feet, admitted it freely to the other cousin's wife and their sister. She sued their home insurance, got medical bills taken care of and some "pain & suffering." Needless to say, she was not invited to many family gatherings at people's homes. She also let slip to the sister that she made it seem worse than it was. She was injured, just not as badly as she portrayed it. They did end up divorced a few years later.

Seems this family had a big history of law suits. All the kids had large bank accounts from different law suits the parents had filed on their behalf.
That's exactly what my husband's employer requires from each employee whenever there is a celebration/function outside of work. If you don't sign the waiver, you can't attend the function.
