Let's sue!!!!!!

I grew up the same and yup, I do know of someone being sued for injuries. It split up my group of friends. One of my friends' parents sued another one of my friends' parents over a bb gun injury. Both kids were negligent, these were girls, btw and teens.

We had one cousin's wife sue the brother. She fell going up the stairs, tripped over her own feet, admitted it freely to the other cousin's wife and their sister. She sued their home insurance, got medical bills taken care of and some "pain & suffering." Needless to say, she was not invited to many family gatherings at people's homes. She also let slip to the sister that she made it seem worse than it was. She was injured, just not as badly as she portrayed it. They did end up divorced a few years later.

We have a very large umbrella policy...so covered!! :)

I would agree with you however one of my former neighbors was sued by the parents of a boy who was sledding in their yard without their permission and hit a tree and was injured. The parent won because my neighbors didn't have a no trespassing sign on the property and the hill was "an attractive nuisance." We all put up signs after that.

Here, anytime we turn anything even remotely accidental in to our health insurance, we get a letter asking us what happened, where it happened, etc. If our health insurance provider can find anyone else that might be remotely responsible for little Johnny's stitches, they are going after them. It's a little hard not to be paranoid.

Same here. Over a year ago, DD fell while playing in a friend's yard and broke her arm. We got a questionnaire from our insurance company asking where the accident occured, if it could be someone else's fault, etc. We didn't bother to even tell them DD fell off our property- it was DD's own fault (not looking where she was going), and I wouldn't dream of sueing. I didn't see what the big deal was concerning who was going to pay- we have good health coverage, and accidents are one of the reasons we have it.

Until it happens to you, you have NO idea what it feels like to have people you consider friends sue you and I am not talking casual or new friends....I am talking people we were close to for 18 years.... It is devastating and the money is NOT the point when you are the one being sued. It is the emotional part of not believing that someone you love would do this to you. It was an accident during an annual party 5 years ago, we no longer host that event after being the host site for over 15 years and in fact have not hosted another event since. It has caused a huge rift with the entire circle of friends as we are viewed as the bad guys for being upset that they sued. It is so so sad......

I saw a friend sue another friend over a car accident that wasn't her fault.

Here's the scenario - One friend, Melissa, worked hard all throughout college and her summers and purchased a used Dodge Omni. She was excited to have a car her senior year of college. She was driving another friend to the mall, Kim. On the way to the mall, a car made a left hand turn right in front of Melissa. Police said it was not her fault and ticketed the other driver. Turns out the other driver did not have insurance. Kim had a very tiny cut on her bottom lip. When I tell you it was a quarter inch, I'm not joking. She waited for a plastic surgeon to stitch in the ER. The only time you could actually see the scar, once the stitches were removed, was when the weather turned cold and the scar turned white.
And guess what, Kim sued Melissa. She kept saying that she was sorry but the other guy didn't have auto insurance and her parents wanted her to sue Melissa to recoup the damages done to her face. Seems this family had a big history of law suits. All the kids had large bank accounts from different law suits the parents had filed on their behalf.

So yes, people you consider friends can and may sue you. Let's just say, after I found out Kim was suing Melissa, I never let her ride in my car again. So I am cautious. I know that not everyone is Kim but it was certainly an eye opening experience.

We had a neighbor who made a fortune suing people over the simplest accidents. I was not aware of this at the time and let her twenty something son and his friends play football in our yard. We have a much larger yard than they did and I didn't think anything of it. My DH nearly had a melt down explaining that these seemingly very nice people whom we had over during summer BBQ's etc., had paid for everything they owned thru lawsuits. I felt like such a heel telling the guys not to play there anymore since we had a mole problem and were afraid someone would get hurt. The insurance companies are just a responsible for this problem because they too are looking for someone else to pay the bills! I fell off the steps in our garage and broke my elbow which also resulted in 2 shoulder surgeries complete with physical therapy. They sent me two letters and a phone call asking me if I was certain the injury occurred on my property!

Last week, a family friend was helping a teen jump his car which had stalled in the middle of the road. The kid didn't know he had the car 1st and when it finally started, it jumped and hit my friend, pinning him between the 2 cars, not once but twice..my friend was hurt bad, was in the hospital for over a week and had to have 2 surgeries on his leg. Because he was hit by a car, his insurance wont pay a thing. They found out the kid has no insurance, so the only way to get the medical bills paid is to sue the kid. Thankfully the insurance is doing this, not the friend.

I had to laugh at this. That's exactly what my husband's employer requires from each employee whenever there is a celebration/function outside of work. If you don't sign the waiver, you can't attend the function. :upsidedow

What is worse is that your boss actually thinks this will hold up in court :lmao:

Your home owners policy should cover any accidental injuries that occur on your property.

Not if you don't have adequate coverage it won't.

I don't live my life in fear of being sued but I do have large liability coverages on our house and cars as well as a large umbrella policy because you can't control people's stupidity.

I have a million dollar umbrella policy, but that is hardly enough these days. That is about the going rate for any sorta accident that involves bodily injuries.

More than being sued I would worry about a health insurance company coming after you. When a child comes in with an injury often the hospital asks WHERE the injury occurred- if it was at someone else's home the insurance company might come after your home owners to pay.

I find it really odd that you all are saying that when you go to the hospital they ask where something happened. With two rough and tough sons, we spent many nights at the ER and never, not even once, were we asked where something happened.

Younger DS went in needing stitches in the back of his head from playing on a trampoline at his grandmothers--didn't ask. Another time he ran into the corner of a table and had a swollen nose and two black eyes (happened at daycare)--didn't ask.

Older DS and friends decided to pretend to be car jacks and he ended up with a truck on his knee!!!! (long, long story) ER never asked.

None of these three things or many of the other things happened at our house. The insurance their dad carried paid for the ER and doc and never questioned where anything happened. Maybe its just certain kinds of injuries?

I worked in the ED at the hospital here- in an accident situation (fall etc) we ALWAYS asked. We have also had our insurance company call us and ask where one of us was injured- or send paperwork to be filled out.

My dd broke her collarbone and her ankle. I can't recall the hospital asking where it happened but they may have. The insurance company did call though and ask where she fell both times. I said my driveway both times;)

That's interesting. The ER didn't ask nor did the insurance. They just paid the provider. Maybe we had so many that they just said "oh, its just those two again." :rotfl:

Younger DS even broke his hand in a fight at school (small break called a boxer's fracture), no one knew it until that evening during baseball practice the coach noticed he was wincing every time he caught the ball. Anyway, even with that neither the ER nor the insurance company asked many questions. I am sure the ER asked what happened but I don't think it was even reported that it happened at school.
