When my parents told me we were moving to TX I asked them "how many horses will we get for our car?"

I just KNEW that you couldn't drive cars there and that everyone used horses to get around. I pictured wagons and dirt roads. I knew that everyone had to wear cowboy boots and hats too!!

This was back in '80 and I was 10.

ok, i know not everyone does, but during gwb's inauguration, our city was flooded by guys from texas wearing tuxes, cowboy boots and hats. so sometimes stereotypes come from somewhere. i do not know a single person who would wear cowboy boots with a tux, but there were thousands of people who did this to the inaugural, so.... it seems like texans do wear these things sometimes.

As to many others, I always thought of Texas as Southwestern. For me, this means southern, but with a cowboy flare. When I think of the actual south I think of Georgia and Missippippi with lots of swamps and plantation homes. Texas seems a lot more rough and tumble to me, but definitely has those ''good ol' southern values".

I think Texas is big enough to have character all of it's own. Those near the border are COMPLETELY diff than those in Dallas, and those in El Paso are MUCH different than those in Tyler. Some parts are VERY stereotypical southern, while others aren't. Just depends on where you are!

I would imagine the same is true for every state, just some stereotypes stand out more than others (Texas = Cowboys, California = Plastic Everything, New York = Rude & Pushy, etc.). I'm a Californian and have never had plastic surgery, nor have I ever even thought about it.

Texas is a state of mind. We are big enough to be many things depending on where you are in the state. in East Texas we have plenty of Rednecks who fit in with anyones image of a Southerner. As you go further west you get into more cattle country and the Western Cowboy mentality is more evident. Futher West still and you start feeling the Southwest attitude of New Mexico and Arizona. On the border with Louisiana we enjoy mudbugs and beer and the further West you go we love our Tex Mex food and margritas. And in other places we cook the best bar-b-que in the world. Head to the coast and you can get your fill of shrimp, fish, and crabs. We generally don't like to think of ourselves as anything but Texans. Historically, we were our own Republic for a while and fought for that independence from Mexico. My Gr,Gr,Gr Grandfather fought at San Jacinto for Texas Independence and my Gr Gr Grandfather fought for the Confederacy for four years and almost died doing it for the South. My Grandfather and Father fought for America in the two World Wars. So when I'm asked where we are, my answer is we're in Texas, nuff said. ( the above opinion is representative of a native Texan with deep roots and my not be shared by some latecomers to the state)

Sorry...I consider it southwest. Only Yankees would think it is Southern. Hahaha!

I feel qualified to judge, as I've lived in Alabama, Tennesee, and Texas.

Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia are DEFINITELY the South.
Memphis, Tennessee, where I live now, is called the "midsouth" but still very Southern.
Texas, even when I lived there, was always too full of itself anyway, and thought it stood alone.

Arkansas and Louisiana lines are the western end of the "South", to me, anyway. Kentucky and WV are the northern borders, and I'm not sure what to do with Virginia or Florida. Geographically they qualify, but I'm not so sure!

depends on where you are in Texas. For Example, Houston is pretty southern, but go 150 mile west to San Antonio and that's pretty western .

For example, did you know if an emergency vehicle is coming and you have to stop on a green light to let it pass that when the light turns RED you can GO because the ambulance made you miss your turn? OK, so maybe it's not an actual law,
