Let’s Put These AP’s to Use!!
June 2018 PTR

Welcome everyone! It’s time for another PTR from me and thanks so much for reading and commenting. Planning for and reliving these trips after is a lot of fun as many of your know. This is going to be our third trip in a 12 month period since our AP’s expire in early July. In addition to being our 3rd trip in a year this will be our families 7th trip to Disney World overall. Last July we went on our first trip as a family of four that you can read about HERE. Then, this past December we went on our first trip at Christmas. I haven’t started a Trip Report for that yet as I’m still working on the summer trip, but I think it will come...hopefully.

Anyways, we are a family of four and have a major addiction to Disney World as you can tell. I’m a little sad this trip is coming as we have been looking forward to this year of Disney for a while, but now it’s almost over. We did AP’s this year and our plan at this point is to not return to Disney World for two years after this trip at which point we will do an annual pass again. We just have found that for us we get more bang for our buck when we can do longer trips since DW and I are both teachers and have the ability to do that in the summers and then with the annual pass you can do a July trip one year, a June trip the next year, plus a winter trip in between. But we have some other places we want to travel and will take the two years after this trip to do some of that before returning to Disney World. I’m not sure if we can hold ourselves to this plan, but we are going to try. Well, let’s do some introductions.

Introductions

I will start by introducing myself, I’m Jon.

I am a high school athletic director and head football coach and love the job I get to do every day. I’ve been teaching and coaching at the same school for eleven years and have just finished my first season as a head football coach. Anyway, I honestly think I have the best job in the world. Being able to make a positive impact on kids every day is something I love doing. It certainly has its challenges, but overall I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.

Now for my best friend and wife, April.

April loves our family vacations as well as almost any time we get to spend together. We have developed a love for Disney and vacationing together and it is something she cherishes. She is a school psychologist by day and an incredible mother and wife by night. She works in the same school district I do and so we get to see each other almost every day, which really is nice. She loves her job working with kids and is also an assistant girls basketball coach at our school as well, which she loves doing.

Next up is DS5, who will be six by the time this trip happens.

I say this every year, but I can’t believe he is about to be six years old. It seems like just yesterday that he was born and came into our family, but I’m sure all of you with kids think it goes fast too! He has a great personality and is a good kid most of the time. He loves playing sports and plays basketball, baseball, track, & flag football. In addition to all of these things DS still loves Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, the Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, and all of the super heros. I don’t want to speak too soon, but he sat through the entire new Star Wars movie with me, which I thought was impressive for a five year old, and is developing a big interest in those movies which makes me really excited as a fan myself! Anyway, he is an awesome kid and is a great big brother.

Finally, we have the newest member of our family, DS2.

He will be 2 & ½ years old during our trip and this will already be his 3rd trip to Disney World. He is an incredibly sweet little boy who LOVES his mommy! His brother was always kind of a daddy’s boy, but he has certainly taken the other side. He just loves to sit and play with his mom. He loves playing with any type of ball and he also loves to sit and watch basketball on TV, go figure! He’s has just started getting into shows like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and some of the other Disney Junior shows. He had a great time on our Christmas trip and as many of you know these trips with kids his age are so fun because each trip as he gets a bit older the things he enjoys changes and it changes the entire experience for the family, which is why many of us love Disney.

The Master Itinerary

Since we have taken care of introducing everyone let’s look at the master plan for this trip. This PTR is meant to serve three purposes: 1) To organize my thoughts on all of the different components of the trip, 2) To get suggestions from all of you on the different things we plan on doing, and 3) To build some excitement for the trip! I hope you all enjoy reading and please comment with any suggestions along the way.

If you’ve read any of my other Trip Reports you’ll see we like long trips. I think we stayed for 12 nights two years ago stayed for 13 night last summer, and 13 nights again this summer. Since DW and I are both teachers we have the luxury of summer break and we prioritize spending vacation time with our family during the summer. Now, we also have to do split stays for our trips because I do use my annual Travel Agent discount for one week, but that is the longest you can stay on the discounted rate. We then usually just stay at a value resort for the other days as that usually fits in our budget. We are teachers in the state that is 49th out of the 50 states in teacher pay, but that’s another topic and I won’t go there!

Anyways, for the first several days of our trip we are going to stay at the Dolphin Hotel. My wife and I do collect quite a few frequent traveler miles and points and by doing this we are staying for six nights at the Dolphin absolutely free. Our blog is listed in my signature where we discuss some of the ways we got these hotels for very cheap or free. Anyways, we are really looking forward to staying here. First, it is a new place for us and second, we LOVE the location. We stayed at the Boardwalk once before and loved the proximity to Epcot and Hollywood Studios and are looking forward to it again.

After we stay for the first half of our trip at the Dolphin we will be moving over to another new resort to us:

We stayed at French Quarter last summer, but unfortunately the discount we are staying with was not available there. We would definitely stay there again, but figure Riverside is the next best thing. The boat ride to Disney Springs is awesome and we also like how close it is to Epcot and the Magic Kingdom.

So, with all of that in mind, here is the master itinerary:

The Swan & Dolphin seem to have times of year when the rates are really good, especially compared to the Disney deluxe resorts. And their location is great!

Day 1 Plans

Here are my thoughts on the first day of our trip, the one in which we are all super excited because we are traveling to Disney World!!!

We normally fly out very, very early from Oklahoma, but they actually had a non-stop flight on this day that doesn’t leave until around 2:00 in the afternoon. So, we won’t have to worry about a butt crack of dawn wake up call nor will we have a layover at all. Both of which will be kind of nice with the kids. The 2:00 flight will hopefully fall about nap time so we can see some of this on the flight.

We will arrive in Orlando at 6:00, which is kind of late for us so we’ll probably just get off the plane and head to the hotel to check things out. Of course we’ll have to transport ourselves to the Dolphin as they don’t get Magical Express which is kind of a downer. I’ll have to claim our luggage at baggage claim which isn’t something we’ve done in a while in Orlando. So, if any of you have a good option for getting from the airport to the Dolphin without breaking the bank I’d love to hear what you guys think.

I’m also kind of excited that our room should be ready upon our arrival. On our last couple of trips we’ve arrived early, but couldn’t get in our room yet which would be fine for us adults, but the kids need that place to spread out and run around. Of course our location is great at the Dolphin so we might walk over to the Boardwalk or something, but we probably won’t be heading to a park on this night unless my thoughts go through a major change.

So, that’s day one. Not real excited since we leave home a little later than normal, but hopefully we’ll be all rested and ready for the first park day.

Day 2 Plans

Well, things have been busy around here and the weather is getting cold again, so I think I’ll do an PTR update here where I can think about how hot I’ll be this summer at Disney World!

After getting to bed early on our arrival day we are going to be up early and over to Epcot for a morning of touring.

I’m not exactly sure of what the touring plan will have for today, but as of now we plan on not using FP’s so we can save them for our evening park. We will probably head the Test Track when the park opens and ride while grabbing a child swap pass. DW and DS5 love this ride!

We will also probably spend some time in the World Showcase since we won’t be using FP for the Future World rides.

At this point I also don’t have any dining reservations for this day so we may just eat lunch somewhere we enjoy in the World Showcase like Fish & Chips in the UK or Restaurant Marrakesh in Morroco.

We will head out for a break after we eat lunch and then have plans to head to Hollywood Studios at about 5:00. We plan on going this morning without FP so we could save for tonight. We aren’t sure when the new Toy Story Land stuff will open exactly so we are going to plan to have a few days here with FP’s so we can experience the different elements, especially the new Slinky Dog Coaster.

Again, we may not have an exact plan until we know an opening date, but that is the overall plan for the night. We also might watch Fantasmic! It will just depend on how everyone is doing. If the kids are tired and cranky we may head to bed, but if they are doing ok we might watch it. This is a positive to staying at the Dolphin. We can watch Fantasmic! at 9:00 and still be back to the hotel by 10:00 since we don’t have to wait on a bus.

Awesome! Glad you guys are getting a trip in. The AP's were good for us, but we'll be taking about 2-3 years of other vacations. We got our monies worth out of them for sure, but at about $2,000 for the three of us it's not something we can do very often!

We kind of mix up our FP+ strategy. At MK we tend to use them early as you can still get pretty good stuff on the 4th, 5th, etc. FP after using your first three, but at the other parks we often save them for the evenings so we know we have some good ride options waiting for us!

Day 3 Plans

Let’s move on a talk about what the plans we have for Day 3 are. This is a type of day we have been doing more and more of on recent trips because it ends up just so relaxing. We are getting up and heading to rope drop at Magic Kingdom at 9 AM.

Once in the park we’ll tour some, although I haven’t thought much about specifics yet. I probably should since we have to make FP’s in about two weeks. This will be our first day in MK on this trip so we’ll definitely plan on making a stop here:

Other than that we will just see. We will probably spend some time back in the circus area as DS2 may be tall enough to ride Barnstormer at this point, but we will see. He loves Dumbo anyway so we’ll definitely do that one! Of course I’ll also have to stop off and have a Dole Whip and/or Citrus Swirl since it’s our first time in MK.

We will leave the park at about 12:15 as we have to catch a bus to our lunch reservation where we will be ordering this:

Yes, I can’t go a trip without getting over to Animal Kingdom Lodge for the bread service. Hopefully the animals will be a little more active than they were on our last visit to Sanaa.

We will be done with lunch by around 2:30 and we have the rest of the day with no plans. We’ve started doing days like this recently and it is great as it will allow us to spend some time around the Dolphin, swimming at the pool, and just hanging out. We may walk over to Beaches & Cream or the Boardwalk for dessert, but mainly we are just going to have a nice relaxing evening and an early bedtime!

Day 4 Plans

After the early bedtime we don’t have any super early plans on this day, but we are getting up in time to head to one of our favorite breakfasts here:

We have a reservation at 10:30, so we’ll probably try and be at the Wilderness Lodge bus stop at Hollywood Studios by 9:30 or so. This is a big benefit of the Dolphin that we are looking forward to. We don’t have to take two different busses to get to another resort. We can take the easy walk to Hollywood Studios and then just one bus to the resort. When we finish breakfast we will just had back to Hollywood Studios and walk back to our resort hopefully by 1:00 or so. We will then take naps and rest before heading here at about 4:00:

I’m not sure what FP’s we will try to get here, but we’ll definitely get Flight of Passage if we can, but not sure if I’ll be able to this early in the trip. DW still hasn’t been on this ride because of her surgery in the summer and some bad luck during our December trip. She is super excited about it and may lose her mind if she doesn’t get on it this time! I don’t think we will be seeing Rivers of Light this trip. We saw it last summer, but didn’t love it, so we will probably just head out once we are ready on this evening.

Day 5 Plans

Here on Day 5 our plan is to get up early and head over to Epcot EMH! Getting there early isn’t too hard for us since DS2 is such an early riser, not to mention we will still be staying at the Dolphin so we don’t have to leave too early to get to the International Gateway by park opening.

Once we get inside our plan is to head straight over to:

I’m not sure the fastest way to get there from the International Gateway? Will they let us go towards France at that time or do we have to go towards Future World?

We also have FP’s later in the morning at Soarin' where we can see this:

We also plan on stopping to use a FP to meet some of our favorite friends at the Character Spot. Here is a throwback picture from 2014:

The morning will finish off with us having lunch at one of our favorite places, Via Napoli. Oh, that Via Napoli Pizza! Here is our pizza from a couple of years ago, as you can see we couldn't even get a picture taken before some of it was gone!

Our reservation there should have us finished by about 1:00 and out of the International Gateway towards the Dolphin. After we head back and get some naps in we don’t have any firm plans the rest of the day. We will definitely spend some time at the pool and we might head over and do some miniature golf since we are so close to Fantasia Gardens.

For dinner we will probably just decide on somewhere around Crescent Lake. I’m not sure of all the places the Dolphin has for quick service, but we might wander over to the Boardwalk Bakery as well. We shall see!

That's awesome! I'm jealous of you staying at Wilderness Lodge. It is maybe my favorite place we've stayed. I don't know if DW loved it as much as I did, but I loved the theming and atmosphere of the place! And you can't beat the boat service to MK unless you are staying on the monorail.

Day 6 Plans

After a nice late evening last night our Day 6 plans include an early morning 8 AM EMH at the Magic Kingdom! This means we will need to be at the bus stop around 7 AM or just after. As long as we have the kids in bed by 8 or so the night before this is not a problem for us. They are pretty good about getting up early as we have to do it during the school year. In fact, they really don’t sleep past about 7 at the latest anyways on a normal day.

We plan on spending our EMH mostly in Fantasyland and we’ll probably head straight for a rope drop ride on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train:

After doing some other things in the areas we also have FP’s at Big Thunder, Space Mountain, and Seven Dwarfs later in the morning. As we scheduled FP’s I did something a little different this time. Since we can still get a CS for DS2 I tried to schedule a ride like Big Thunder or Space for two people and then a smaller ride the DS2 can do with the other adult at the same time. For instance in this morning’s plan we have a FP for Big Thunder for DS5 and myself. At the same time I schedule DW a FP for Pirates. So after we go to Big Thunder and get a CS for DW she and DS2 can go ride Pirates instead of just standing around waiting for us to ride. Then we have a CS pass for DW and DS5 to ride Big Thunder later. I’ve done the same on FP’s for Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear, so hopefully this strategy works for us!

We plan on being out of the park at noon as this is one day we do have plans to hit another park in the evening time so a good nap will be critical. After some nap and pool time in the afternoon we have dinner reservations at one of our favorite places:

We love Cape May and the food has always been really good for us. We’ve done this one for several trips in a row so I wasn’t sure we would do it again, but being at the Dolphin the proximity to the restaurant was too good to pass up. I love eating the crab and the quality is always really good, which is especially impressive since it’s a buffet.

After dinner we are going to again take advantage of the location and head over for a little time in the World Showcase of Epcot. One thing I want to make sure and do on this night is to watch the American Adventure show again. I know it isn’t the most entertaining, but I haven’t seen it since DW and I took our first trip in 2011. I enjoy the history that the show has in it and just kind of want to see it again.

We will probably then just spend some time in what we call the “top” part of the World Showcase. That is not an approved name for the area, but it is at the top when on the park map! So we’ll spend a little time in Germany, Japan, and Morocco. We might venture as far as China, but really not much of a plan for this night. We’ve never really let the kids do any of the kidcot stations so we might should try those out.

We then plan to find a spot to watch IllumiNations. We got a great spot coming out of France this past summer only about 25 minutes before the show, so hopefully we can do something like that again. Here was our spot from last summer:

So, it will be a pretty busy day and a fairly late night for young kids, but we are sleeping in a little in the next morning.

Good to hear. We've done it once or twice that way in the past, but have scheduled it that way a bunch on this trip.

We loved this place for breakfast, and I want to do it again. But I also really want to do it for dinner, too!

Dinner is really good, but I really like seafood. DW is not a huge fan of some types of seafood, but she does like crab, so overall it is a big win for us!

I love this show because I'm a big US History buff. My DH is as well but we missed it last trip.

I love those kind of things. It's just a hard show with the kids. I've always had a hard time dragging them in there, but I've got to get back to see it again!

Day 7 Plans

After a late night of watching IllumiNations we will be sleeping in a little as it is our check out day from the Dolphin. That might would be a sad thing, but for us it will still be exciting as we are moving to a new resort for the rest of our trip. Our plan was to get up, check out, and send out bags to our new resort, but we’ve had a change and will probably now just check out stuff with bell services at the Dolphin and come get all our bags later ourselves. I’ll tell you why later!

We are heading over here for the day:

That picture is a blast from the past! I miss the backlot ride sometimes, but I know some cool new stuff is coming!!

We plan to get to the park about 11:00 and stay for about 3-4 hours until check in time at our new resort. We do have FP’s for Disney Junior first which we haven’t seen on our last two trips and DS2 will love this.

Next, we have a FP here:

Hopefully it won't be raining like this pic! DW and I got soaked that day.

DW and I will probably just trade rides and get child swap pass. We then have FP’s over at Star Tours later in the afternoon. We only have plans until about 2:00 as we will probably not stay too long here. We are a little disappointed that the boat will not be running to Hollywood Studios due to construction. We just found this out this week so we’ll have to walk or take a bus. The boat will run from Epcot to the Swan/Dolphin, but not the Hollywood Studios because they are working on a bridge.

We will head back to the Dolphin and pick up our bags for our resort change. As you may remember from early in this PTR out second resort was supposed to be Port Orleans Riverside as I had booked that on a bounce back rate in December. I have constantly been looking though for a Travel Agent rate the Animal Kingdom, but no TA rates had been available. I’ve never had any trouble getting them in years past, but this year there wasn’t anything, except Caribbean Beach! Well, I checked on a whim last week and guess what. Animal Kingdom was available. It was going to be about $500 more than what I was paying at Riverside, but for a Savanna View room. I was ready to book, but thought I’d check and little more and then saw that the Yacht Club was also available for only $200 more than our Riverside rate. I talked it over with DW and we are now booked for the week here:

We wanted Animal Kingdom, but Yacht Club was too good to pass up. Our boys will love Stormalong Bay and we are super excited about the proximity to Epcot and how easy it will be to move from the Dolphin to Yacht Club. So, we will probably just pick our stuff up at the Dolphin and walk over to the Yacht Club. Again, we are really excited about Stormalong Bay:

We also really like the design of the renovated rooms at Yacht Club and are looking forward to these as well:

We don’t have any other plans for the night, except to have dinner somewhere. I tried to get Beaches and Cream for this night after we moved here, but I haven’t been able to yet. We will probably just do some swimming and have dinner around Crescent Lake somewhere before getting a good night's sleep. We do have an early morning EMH The next day:
