I have a Quantaray 18-125mm 3.5-5.6 lens on my D50- its the lens I use most. The pictures I posted from Germany were taken with it. Question is, I recently read that Quantaray lens are quite inferior to Nikon(and Sigma, Tamron) and I found a Nikon 18-135mm on Ebay- brand new with shipping for what I paid for the Quantaray.($260ish) Is it worth considering upgrading to the Nikon lens? Would it be faster? Give me better photos? Thanks for any help:)

I have the 18-135 and highly recommend it. It is extremely sharp, has good color and contrast. Downsides are some vignetting, distortion at the wide end (correctable in PP), and "consumer" build quality. For the money, though, I don't think you can beat it. Only other real option is the 18-200VR, which is in a whole different league, price-wise.

that's quite interesting, I know that at one time, Sigma made the quantaray lenses for Ritz, so I question that they are quite inferior.. to sigma lenses..

at one time Sigma, tamron, tokina, all the off brands were quite inferior to nikon, canon, and minolta..
but that has changed over the years

I think the 18-135 is a good lens- my wife has one on her D40 and I would definately reccomend it. A too-good-to-be-true Ebay deal on one may be another question entirely though- just be careful with that.

Lets remember that even NIKON makes some bad lenses(along with good ones).

If that lens is serving you well, I would not worry too much about the brand.

The way I understand it is that over the years Quantaray lenses have been produced by both tamron and Sigma, but they have also sold lenses that are produced by other not so good third parties which has resulted in a bad overall reputation. It does not mean that a specific lens will be bad.
