I gave my son the choice of having a birthdya party out at the local bowling alley, but he wants to have it at home. We decided on a Lego theme. I made the invitations on the computer and they came out great.

I am going to make a Lego cake and do decorations from the dollar store in primary colors.

I need help with some games and stuff to keep 10 8 year olds amused! I was going ot have "Guess the amount of Lego's in the jar" game with a small prize..but I am lost after that.

Any help would be greatly appeciated!!!

My son wants a lego party this year, too! I'll be watching this thread for ideas. Maybe you could give everyone the same 30 bricks or so, and see what different creations they can make out of the piles (your local Lego store pick-a-brick section would be a good place to get those pieces) and then they could take their creations home as their goodie bag. Play Lego bingo and use the Lego pieces to cover up their numbers, winner gets a prize. Drop the Lego in the jar (like that old clothespin in the jar game). Fill a pinata with small Legos and candy. I've seen Lego-shaped fruit snacks and Sweetarts-type candy. I guess you could take a rectangular cake and decorate it with cupcakes on top to look like a giant Lego.

I live next to a mall that has a Lego store....just like the one at DTD but smaller. They have birthday parties there. The birthday child picks a set to put together....maybe the Millenium Falcon...and then an employee helps the kids all put it together. I think they have each kid or team of kids work on a different part at the same time and then put it together. Maybe you could do something similiar at home?? If you already had some sets you could use those....it'll be new for the party kids.

You could always do some sort of build challenge. Everyone gets the same type and size legos and they can try to build an animal or a ship or something. I made the lego cake one year and it was a big hit and REALLY easy. If it's in the budget, the kids could get those small $5 lego sets as party favors. We have a lego board game that's really fun for kids.

Sorry, I have a Lego obsessed child, but can't come up with much else. Good luck. It sounds like a fun challenge!

I like the idea of having each kid build something.

Maybe give them a bunch of legos & a picture of the design. They have to use up all the legos (an easy design) to make it look like the picture. That can be part of their goody bag. Oh & don't give them the directions for it.

How about a scavenger hunt & at the end of it, would be the above legos for each kid to design. You might need lots of legos for that though.

Something along the lines of the mummy wrap/guess how many sheets of toilet paper go around the preggo's belly. But how about have each kid guess the height of another kid by building legos & see who is the closest.

Who can build the tallest tower with out it toppling (single lego brick or no bigger then the 6's or 8's legos).

LEGO RACERS If you have enough wheels for everyone give them each a a set of four wheels and put all the other legos you have available out in a bin in the senter. Give everone a set amount of time to build a race car and then race them against each other down a simple ramp (just prop a ramp up on the counter).

CREATIONARY They are actually selling this game in <europe now but not yet in the US I think. you could make your own version. Make a set of index cards with items to build on them (lawn mower, robot, BBQ, etc). Have each child draw a card and take a turn building the item while the others guess what it is. <whoever gets it right gets to go next, or if they have already hada turn choose who goes next of those remaining.

LEGO HUNT Buy a small set with 10 or 15 legos in it. Hide each piece in a different place in the house along with a clue to fins the next one. <The last piece should be the instruction mannual so they can build the item when everything is found.

sorry for all of the typos, I am on DHs notebook with a German keyboard and it is really throwing me!

My Neighbor had a Lego party & did an adorable cake, actually cakes.

She took rectangular sheet cake & cut them into different size rectangles. Then she used frosting to adhere marshmallows on top to replicate the bumps on the tops of the legos. Some had 6 bumps, some had 4. I think she ended up with 2, 4 bump squares, and 2, six bump rectangles.

She then mixed vanilla frosting with food colors to make 1 blue, 1 yellow, 1 green & 1 red (really pinkish, its hard to get solid red). She frosted over the cake & marshmallows & they looked like giant Lego pieces when she was done! Really cute!

Lego used to carry a silicone lego cake pan as well. Not sure if it is still available. She didn't know about the cakepan so she improvised instead.

Have fun planning.

My friend had a Lego Party for her son. She actually bought each guest one of the $10-15 sets (I think at the Lego Store, so she then got points towards any future purchases for her son.) This was the boys' activity and their goody prize. She only had 4-5 guests, and the boys LOVED it.

We just had a Lego Store open and my son wants his next party there. Lego, Lego, Lego....that's all I hear!

We're having one tomorrow!

Here are my plans:

- Lego on a Spoon Race

- Guess the Legos in the Jar

- Lego Coloring pages (as kids get there, then I'll cut off a strip and put it in one of those create-a-mugs that they'll use for cake and punch time - I found some on clearance at AC Moore for .50 each, better than disposable cups!)

- Building Contest - I plan to just let them build whatever they want for 20 minutes then let them show them off. (I got this idea from the Lego Kidsfest we went to in November - we went early for a special Lego Club "meeting" where they basically had all of the kids build as they sttod at a designated table - they did it for 45 mins and they all had a great time. A couple of Master Builders from the company floated around and at the end they showed a few of the creations and let the kids describe them).

- Build and Race Car Sets - I ordered some little Racer sets off of eBay (they were McDonald's toys), new in package, so each kid will get one and put it together and race it (and take it home).

I'm doing cupcakes with molded Lego candies on the top (I used a Lego ice cube mold and those meltable colored candy discs from the cake decorating section)

I'll check back in and let you know how it goes!

The game has been out for quite a while (5-6 years?) in the states. DS13 got it when he was younger. Not sure if it's still at TRU, etc, but it would be a fun game.

Along the lines of what others have said with the "brick sculpture" sort of contest, if it works to get a small set for each child- you could give them just the pieces in a cup. (No directions or package). See who comes up with the best design. It's an activity + the favor.

eta: I just looked, there is a Lego party on familyfun.com too: http://familyfun.go.com/parties/lego-party-704662/

I am sorry if I was wrong but I wonder if you are thinking of a different game:confused3 DS11 is a huge lego fan and I never saw creationary in the states (we have lived in germany less than a year), only the lego game and lego racers game which are set up differntly (you are told how to buld your itesm) and designed for younger kids. Creationary is part of the new line of lego games that came out here this spring and is marketed for ages 7 and up. There are about 10 games in the line. we looked for both Creationary and Ramses Pyramid for my nephew at many online store sto ship directly to his parents this Christmas and I could find it on tons of UK and German ishgts but no American ones. Here is the link to the games I am talking about. They are not on the US lego website. If you know of somewhere in the US, I would love to know baout it so I can sned some to my nephew. Thanks:goodvibes

Either way, the home made version of doing a Pictionary type thing with Legos would work for a party if OP is interested.

We come from a family of Lego-maniacs so when DS ahd his 6th b-day party we had plenty of Legos to go around!

here is what we did:
stations-we had a pirate station, a city station, and a vehicle station. Each Station had 4-6 chairs and if there was a chair empty you could go to it.The middle just held bins of legos and they kids built whatever they wanted. The kids were happy as clams and we stopped it after 30-45 minutes but I think they could have gone on even longer. The stations were actually the best thing b/c some kids (at 6) were just not as adept with Legos as others but each could build what they wanted.

lego relay-I made a Lego model (just a random thing) and had 2 buckets-1 for each bucket. Each bucket held the same pieces needed to make the structure I did. The kids had to run to my son's room, build the structure, get it approved by DH, and then take it apart befor running back.

Lego racers races-each kid got a lego racer set and had to put it together. Then we raced the cars and had contests for things like how far they went as well as who had the fastest car. I will say this was tricky because while my son had been building this for a long time and it took him just a few minutes, it was clear that some kids had not had as much experience and had a very hard time with it and needed lots of adult assistance. With 8year olds I would think it would be better!

His cake was a "Lego Vikings vs. Lego Star Wars". It was a sheet cake I made with a "volcano" on the side. I warmed marshmallows in the microwave and sculpted them and dyed it to be the lava flowing down the side. Lego people battled on the cake. I also had cupcakes with gummi legos on top.

My DSs have had a game for several years called Constructionary: The Lego Game of Charades that sounds very similar to the game in the link (Creationary). I'm thinking that is what the other pp has, too.

As far as games, I know when my kids get together with others, they just want to build, so I think anything that has to do with building challenges would be great. Love the Lego Cake also from Family Fun!

That was the name- Constructionary! I didn't think Creationary sounded right (but it does look similar). Constructionary was basically pictionary, had the cards with various categories, only difference being they were all things suited to Lego building.

He did have one too that was Lego Racers (?) that was not as fun. Basically they had cards of a model and you had to spin/go around the board til you collected all the pieces to build it. Constructionary was much more fun.

Those new ones, Ramses and all, look neat!

I have a girlfriend who blogs and just this past summer she had a Lego themed party for her son. Here is a link to the blog http://www.moneywisemoms.com/2009/09/diy-thursday-lego-birthday-party.html
Best thing to do after a week of ER trips and hubby's time in the hospital? Having a birthday party full of crazy 6-year-old boys. Yep, that's how we take it easy. This week, my Do-it-Yourself project was my son's birthday party:

Since my son is super-obsessed with Legos, we chose Legos as the theme. Decorating was easy! I used a game board from Lego Creator, a game I picked up last summer at a yard sale for $1.00. I filled a yard sale vase with Legos for a great centerpiece. The lovely plastic tablecloth was from the Dollar Tree. I also bought a bag of balloons there.

I made a cute banner with regular construction paper. I just cut some rectangles, punched some circles with a circle punch, and the toddlers helped me glue them down. I glued them to a piece of ribbon--easy decor! Now that it's down from the dining room, it's hanging in my son's room. He loves it!

While we spent a lot of time just building Legos on the floor, I also had some planned games and activities. I used a piece of posterboard, .99 at CVS, and made a "Pin the Spot on the Lego" game. We blindfolded each boy, spun them, and they laughed at each attempt to find the missing spot. They also cracked up at a simple balloon game; we blew up about 15 balloons and left them on the floor. One at a time, each boy had 30 seconds to pick up as many as they could. It was hilarious; the more they held on to, the more the balloons would shoot away.

I also printed some coloring sheets from Lego.com, and that got the boys to calm down and sit at the table while we got the cake and ice cream ready.

And the cake...the piece de resistance. I always bake my kids' cakes or cupcakes. It's a memory I have from my own childhood; my mom always did for us too. I used two boxes of cake mix, made six cupcakes and split the rest between two 9x12 pans. My son asked for red frosting, but I was afraid the Wilton food coloring would be too red, looking too much like blood. I talked him into blue, and what won him over was the promise of green poop for a day or so after the party. And, yes, that really does happen.

For the party favors, I bought brick candy from a candy store at the mall. It tasted pretty awful, like low-quality Sweetarts, but they did actually stack and stick together. I used some baggies, ribbon and cardstock for "Thanks for Coming" favors to hand out as guests left.

The party was a hit (and very frugal). My son was thrilled with his gift from Mom and Dad: a ginormous Lego set (that I would never buy in a store), bought for FREE with Amazon GCs I'd been saving up from Swagbucks. Happy 6th Birthday, big guy!

Check out birthdaypartyideas.com under Kids parties. They have a lot of ideas. I use this site for every party we have.

Thanks. I will look under the name Constructionary when the next birthday rolls around:thumbsup2

We just did a lego star wars party and one of things I did was order people pieces from pick a brick online and gave each kid a bag with the pieces and they put them together. I printed out little stickers for their shirts that said star wars and also got the pieces to make lightsabers.

Just checking back in post party. Everyone had a great time yesterday at DS's Lego party. It was his 6th birthday and we had 4 friends plus DS. Just the right amount if you ask me - they do get pretty squirrely when they're in party mode ;)

The activities and games went really quickly and I wish I would have had maybe one more up my sleeve. One tip if you're doing a car race...we had set up a foam board at an angls (using an aerobic step) and despite saying several times to not push the cars (as in zing them across the room!) they still kept doing it (with lots of force). So to make it a fair race DH grabbed a dowel that we had a "Start" flag on and had them all line up their cars then step back, so it was an even start when DH lifted the dowel.

Instead of goody bags I picked up some plastic baskets from the dollar store and put a tag on each of them with their names. Inside the basket I had their racer parts, the mug and a pre cut strip for it (I ended up just having them write their name on a strip that I had printed with the Lego logo and a graphic of Legos - none of the coloring pages I found online lent themselves to the mug format) and a little sheet of paper for their guess at the legos in the jar. After the race I had them put their cars back in their baskets and I also gave out another set of McDonalds legos as a prize for the spoon race (everybody got one...no clear winner anyway since they all got silly and were cheating!) so I had them put those in their baskets too. It was nice to have a place for each of them to put their stuff as they got it.

I'd be happy to share the stuff I put together and printed: a welcome sign for the front door, the nametags for the baskets, the liners for the cups, the start and finish line for the races, and some award "ribbons" for the building contest. It's in Powerpoint, so if anyone wants it shoot me a PM and I'll e-mail it to you.

Here's a pic of our decorated dining room:

And here are the cupcakes:
Theo%27s+Birthday+Party+006.JPG
the candy Legos were a big hit, as were the Lego ice cubes that we also made using the same mold (that I ordered on Amazon)

We had a great time, I hope everyone else has a great party!
