Leaving California 4:30 tomorrow morning and in 3 days time we'll be at the fort. We'll be flashen our green mickey head. Keep an eye out for us, wave and say hi. See you all on Monday. :woohoo:

3 days, that's quite an aggressive drive.... God Speed.

Mystify,

We are planning the same trip for 2008. I'd like to hear about your trip. How did the drive go? What was your route, how long did it take, how long/far did you travel each day, and where did you stop? Thanks.

Wow, that is a long way to go for only 3 days. Good thing the fort is worth it.

I don't think he's only going to the Fort for 3 days, he's saying it will only take him 3 days to get to the Fort. He's like the Speed Racer of camping trips ;)

Yes, we do make it across the country in 3 days and that's not speeding either :rolleyes1

Colson39, I read your posts all the time and find them very helpful. FYI, I am a she and not a he.

Sixysixss, As I said we do make this trip in 3 days but, most folks make it in 4 or 5 days. We make our first day the longest because the more days and hours you are in the car the longer the trip seems. The I-10 is an easy interstate with plenty of clean rest stops all across the US. I would recommend you buy a book called The Next Exit. It tells you what is coming up at each interstate exit such as gas, food, hotels and rv parks. It's very helpful but, it's only good for interstates. You may not need this book if you have a GPS. Some GPS systems tell you where gas and food are. I would advise planning how long you want to travel per day. Use google maps or mapquest to help you with this. You can then research on-line some good RV parks to stay overnight at. There are some really trashy ones out there. I would recommend some but, I would need to know which towns you are wanting to stay at. I find the drive very easy, long but, easy. Oh, Don't speed in Louisiana. Good Luck!

I can't reitterate enough The Next Exit. It is worth it's weight in gold. Not only does it tell you what's coming up ahead at each exit, but everything listed in red is considered RV friendly. No pulling off for fuel or food and finding nothing but a small one pump convenient store and nowhere to turn around for two miles.:thumbsup2

No worries, they really need a male/female icon or something on this forum :cool2:

Oh, and don't speed in Georgia either. Ugh :(

Agree about the Next Exit book. I DEFINITELY agree about speeding in LA. Not so much traffic enforcement officers so much as terrible condition of the roads. I felt like we traveled more in the air than on the ground from Beaumont Texas to the Alabama border on I-10. :rotfl:

Glad you made it there and back safely. It is good to hear of folks driving cross-country still. I have made the drive from Houston to CA & Houston to FL many times. Not as much to West Coast in the last few years though. Last time I drove to West Coast (in 2005), we hit no less than 3 checkpoints on I-10 where state patrol was pulling everyone over and looking at driver's licenses, asking questions etc. I assumed they were looking for "coyotes"/drug runners or some sort of criminals :confused3 Did you see anything like that on your trip? Hope not, it really messed with my avg mph.....:lmao:

Regards,
