Our grass is not greening up like the rest of the neighborhood. Does anyone know anything about grass. Is it possible we have winter kill? It is pretty brown where as our neighbors have pretty green lawns. I don't remember our lawn taking this much time to green up last spring.

Did you rake it out. Sometimes the dead grass is laying on top and needs to be raked out. This sometimes prevent the live grass from getting through, This can be done by hand with a nice flexible bambo rake or raked out with a Power thatcher. Some are available for your lawnmower, but it will take out some of the living grass also. I also recommend throwing down some Scotts Ferterlizer, Grass will green up in a week.

You don't have ZoyZa grass, as this takes a while to green up.

I can’t answer your question, but if you locate a lawn care expert, I have a couple questions of my own!

I did rake it last week and then again today. We don't have zoyza grass. I put some seed down and gave it a bit of water. We are supposed to get some rain tonight and if we don't I am going to set up the sprinklers. We are trying to sell our house and the LAST thing I need a dead lawn. This is only the front yard, the back yard is fine. Who knows.

It probably needs to be dethatched(get the brown grass out). There are special dethatching machines that can do it, which I recommend because they do a much better job than just raking. A dethatching machine also makes little holes in the lawn to aerate it.

After you dethatch, you can throw some grass seed to thicken it up a little.

Actually, they're two different machines (a dethatcher and an aerator). I don't believe either one does both. Most landscapers recommend you alternate doing each job every other year -- dethatch one year (usually in the fall) and aerate the next. :)
