Our kids have been begging to stay at the Fort since we ate dinner at Trails End 4 years ago! We have also been bitten by the "traveling by RV" hug...just the possibilities of seeing the world with the kids is exciting! We are researching - with the plan to buy something next spring...any advice welcome...family of 5 - 3 kids.. 9,7, and 5 + 2 dogs. We figured now was a perfect time to rent a trailer (before we buy next spring) and have our first experience be at the Fort.

So, we have three time frames available for this year, 2014 - mid August, late September/early October or early December. Our kids love to swim, bike, fish..very interested in the archery and horseback riding at the fort as well.

We would drive in August, as we will be at our second home in South Florida. Would save us on $$$$on airfare, but I know how hot and humid it would be (at least we have a breeze on the water in South Florida). I think my kids would be miserable at the parks in that heat. Is it just as hot late September/early October? And is December too cold for swimming?

I know the weather can't be predicted, just trying to find the best time that would allow us to do all the outdoor activities and enjoy the parks without melting. Our stay in August can really be as long as we decide/can afford. The other time frames only allow us a week since kids will need to be pulled out of school.

Any thoughts from the experts would be appreciated! Thanks! Kids are super excited...truth be told, so am I!

I would vote for October or December. You can swim in October for sure, Halloween decorations will be up, not horrible crowds, and it will be food and wine. December will be great Christmas decorations, great crowds early in the month, but weather is tricky.

Early Dec gets my vote. It's still swimming weather in Fl. All the pools are heated also.

I would personally skip August. Do you /kids have any interest in either the Halloween or Christmas party. Would seeing the decorations from either holiday enhance your trip? If so, which holiday would you enjoy more?

You will more likely have better swimming weather in Sept/Oct. We were there at Thanksgiving last year an it was cold. My crazy kids swam anyway, but it was entirely too cold for me to consider it. However, the 1st week of December it got warm again. If swimming is important, December is a gamble.

Thank you all for your thoughts and advice. I think we will probably stick to early October...my kids are part fish and if they couldn't swim I think they'd freak. I would also like to experience Food and Wine.

I am drawn to the December dates, as I love the Christmas season :) My DH pointed out that I probably wouldn't relax, as I would be worried about getting gifts, wrapping, planning holiday meals, etc. I think he is right. Maybe one year we will do December, when the kids aren't such huge believers anymore and I can relax about hiding presents, shopping/wrapping without them, etc.

Now to obsess over the planning for this trip...so excited to try The Fort!

We have done August several times and it's hot - I'd avoid since you have other options. My vote is for October - not too hot but you can still swim and Halloween decorations are up and MK has the Halloween party.
