Last minute DVC trip

We have a September UY and want to book a 3-4 night trip at Saratoga Springs this August. We don’t have any points available in the current year, but have enough to borrow from next years points. I’m not sure if there are any rules about booking at this time (I know there would have to be availability!). Thanks.

If you have points in your 2018 use year you could borrow those to make the reservation. You will be asked if you want to borrow points as part of the reservation process. You can book your trip on borrowed points as long as you are within your home resort 11 month window of the trip start date or within 7 months of any other resort.

So you have 2018 points but not 2017 (your current UY), right?

The only thing I think that is "important" to realize about your booking is that you will almost certainly lose any points used to book this trip should you need to cancel since you'd have nearly no time to re-use them by the Aug. 31 deadline.

Do you have any future plans for your 2018 points? If so, you could buy OTU points (up to 24 if you haven't already bought any this UY). I'm sure it wouldn't get you an entire trip but may help you conserve points if you are not wanting to go too deep into borrow mode.

Honestly, if I were you, I'd even consider renting. Sometimes you can get points for SSR for like $8-$9 / pt last minute!

Hmmm, those are interesting ideas. Do you know how much the OTU points are going for? I checked the “rent” board, but didn’t see any points as low as $8-9.

OTU points are $17/pt.

As for cheap rentals....usually have to sign up for their last minute newsletter / specails announcements, follow on Facebook, etc.
Most consistently, David's has them for $9 when they have to be used in 30-60 days - sign up for their last minute newsletter.
Sometimes Timeshare Store - they also have an email you can sign up for. I think this is where I saw I could have gotten them for $8 in January.
DVC rental store has some for $11 right now when I go to their main page.
On the rent board I've seen as low as $9. Just scrolling down the page right now there is a recently closed thread for $10/pt.

Sometimes it's just timing!

What about the rule of 4 -- that you cannot both book and use points in the last 4 months of your use year? i.e . if you want to stay at DVC in the last 4 months of your September use year, you must book that stay before May 1? Or does that not apply since the points will be borrowed?

Rule of 4 is for only non-dvc resorts like Disney/Adventurer Collection etc.
