I'm curious how everyone here feels about overweight women and bathing suits. Do you think it's ok for overweight/obese women to wear a bikini top
and swim shorts? By swim shorts I don't mean the fitted "boy short bottoms," but more sporty running short shaped swim shorts.

To me, it's no different than overweight/obese men wearing swim trunks. Is it different to you? If you think overweight women shouldn't wear bikini tops, do you think overweight men should wear tshirts or rash guards to swim in?

I don't really care as long as their bits and pieces are covered(I feel the same way about fit people too).

I could not care less what anyone else wears. I personally don't have the confidence to pull off a two piece and never would but if someone else can more power to them.

If I'm near any amount of water to be wearing a swimsuit I'm worried about enjoying my time in the water or keeping my kids safe from drowning not being the fashion police. Most days I couldn't even tell you what those next to me are wearing.

My dh on the other hand thinks that some people just aren't meant to wear everything but he also himself won't swim in most public places without a tee on.

I used to live in Europe where it was common to wear less than that so I am fine with it. I myself am pooh sized and wouldn't be caught dead in one. No suit without a skirt for me!

As long as its size appropriate, no big deal. I noticed the Brazilians all wore the same amount of fabric regardless of the size of the gal. Larger women just got longer string to attach the pieces and sometimes it was a LOT of string and very little fabric.

I think people should wear whatever they feel comfortable in. No needs approval from anyone else. They have just as much right to wear a bikini as nasty anorexic chicks. Personally, I find confidence much more attractive than any physical attribute. I have "not skinny" friends who rock bikinis and I think they look amazing because a) they look like a real person and not a barbie or toothpick and I think that is beautiful and b) I find their confidence extremely attractive.

People should wear what they want and never let anyone feel bad about themselves or feel they are not good enough to wear any particular clothing.

To each their own. If I don't like the way something looks I don't do it in regards to myself, but if they don't care why would I?!

I don't find either sex being heavily overweight during swimsuit season very appealing.

I don't like to see it, but idc if they wear them as long as another poster said " all their bits are covered". I wouldn't wear them.

I think the tankini is the perfect option in that case. I'm 46, and have had 2 pregnancies. I'm not that big, and still don't want my tummy exposed.

I just think tankinis and one pieces are not nearly as comfortable in the water, as a bare midriff and I think the sport shorts cover tummies that changed due to pregnancy.

Actually, I would like it if we all went back to wearing the old-fashioned swimsuits that covered the torso, the arms to the elbows and the legs to the knees.:) I've always liked the striped patterns on them, important body parts would be covered, and less sunscreen would be needed. Win, win and win.:rotfl:

Honestly, I don't care what other people choose to wear to the beach or pool. It actually makes me sad to think that someone might choose not to go to the beach and enjoy the seaside due to their size, weight, shape, etc. Personally, I prefer a bit more coverage for myself, but it's not up to me to decide what's best for other people.

As far as my own kids and grandkids, I've always preferred the longer trunks and rashguards on the boys, and a one piece swimsuit, or boy shorts and rashguards, for the girls. I just think they look so cute on toddlers and little kids, plus there is the bonus of less skin exposure to the sun.

I might have had a different opinion 5 years ago.

But in 2008 I moved from Boston to So CALI.

So CALI is called "ENDLESS SUMMER" where bathing suits are worn 24/7.

You will see everyone, every size and shape in 2 piece suits, be it a bikini or a bikini top and shorts, all ages, young to old.

I say BRAVO to all of them!!!! :thumbsup2

As long as the important parts are covered I say go for it. I actually admire some women for being so comfortable with themselves.

Actually bikinis bother me alot less then every day clothes. You are on the beach. Covering up is silly. But I really hate when people, and I see it more in young girls today,, don't dress to their body type. There are all kinds of nice clothes out there. Why not put something on that really suits you and fits well.

I confess, when I was younger and plus-sized, I would wear a bikini made for my size. It suited me and my age.

Now that I am older, I don't think a bikini works for my age so I tend to now wear Land's End tankinis with skirted bottoms.

I don't care what others wear but good gravy, please keep men away from Speedos.

But some people are more modest than others and cover up on the beach too. I would NEVER wear a bikini, but that's just me. Some people don't feel comfortable swimming almost naked. Saying it's silly to cover up on the beach isn't respectful of others' beliefs.

Covering up is not silly if your religion or personal beliefs require it. I am a modest-dressing Christian and my daughter and I cover from elbows to knees when on the beach. My sons do as well. I don't judge others who are not as covered and hate when people judge me. I've gotten my fair share of stares, laughing, and pointing - I try to ignore that, but it can still be painful.

As long as your private parts are covered, I couldn't care less. Overweight people like to enjoy the beach and pool too. I'm overweight in an annoying inproportionate way (ie: I look pregnant, but I'm not). I wear a tankini top and boyshort bottoms. I'm working on trying to lose the belly somewhat, and when I feel comfortable, I'll go back to regular bikini tops (still boyshorts tho).

I have no problem covering up. I do. I'm not thin and even if I was I'd still cover. I'm saying it feels wrong to criticize somebody for wearing less when going into water. Even if your body doesn't really lend itself to wearing less(women and men). But I work in a school and many of our younger and slightly heavier ladies will wear pants that give them giant muffin tops or shirts that just look inappropriate. I have a larger bust. When tube tops were in fashion it would never be ok for me to wear one. Many of my friends could and did not look like they were ladies of the evening. If I put one on, well it would be wrong.
