I am planning on getting this drink finally this year. I read somewhere that it is cheaper without the pineapple. Does anyone know if this is true and what the price without the pineapple would be?

1) It might be true.
2) But, I have never heard of a drink being cheaper if ingredients were left out.
3) That would be like a Martini being cheaper without the olive.
4 Basically, I would plan upon paying the posted price.

Honestly, half the fun of the lapu lapu is sipping it out of a frozen pineapple. Plus...you have delicious, rum-soaked pineapple to pick at when you've finished the drink! :)

The pineapple is frozen?

The last time I had a lapu lapu at the Polynesian, the pineapple was fresh, not frozen, and like others posted, the fun of sticking my straw in to the flesh of the pineapple still in the side of the pineapple (the core and most of the fruit is taken out - but there is still some to be had in the sides! ) to eat was fun! Back in those days we could order the lapu lapu and then take it to the beach to watch WISHES... The first sip is the strongest, I suspect they float some Dark Myers rum on top - which is the Mai Tai (again, like the pp posted)

Enjoy!

By frozen I meant that the fresh pineapple is stored the freezer to keep it (and your beverage) icy cold! At least, that's how it was presented to me in January. :) All I know for sure is that it's delicious!

Captains Mai Tai is *almost* exactly the same, so that is what they referred to. I usually get the first Lapu with the pineapple and then order the second and third drinks without the pineapple, and just pour it in myself. If I recall correctly, it saves at least $4 per drink.

Can you not take it to the beach anymore and watch Wishes? I was planning on doing that.

Its been 5 years since I've been to Disney, and I know that there is a lot of work, and new buildings at the Polynesian, so I have no idea!

it's the same..trust me ;)

I think so too, but a bartender recently told me there was a slight difference…but I could't tell, lol. ;)

Of course, I was also told they were exactly the same by bartenders previously, who were the ones to suggest I just keep one pineapple and get the Captain Mai Tai refills. I'm with you, they are the same, or certainly close enough even a "practiced" Lapu drinker like myself can't tell the difference. :)

Same here!
However, am I the only one who ends up super sticky from the pineapple juice that runs out during cutting or something lol.

I usually hold it with a napkin underneath it so don't get sticky, but if you're walking around carrying them for very long or too far, they do get heavy. Drink faster? LOL

That is BRILLIANT! Thank you!

Can you get these at the Poly pool bar?

I've had my share of these at Ohana but now that I'm staying at the Poly I want one while at the pool.

In the past, you couldn't get a Lapu in the pineapple at the pool bar because they didn't stock the pineapples. (You could get a Captains Mai Tai though) I usually just got one upstairs at the tambu lounge at Ohana to go (if I wanted the pineapple), then refilled at the pool bar.

Since the construction and now that the pool bar has reopened, I'm not sure if they have the pineapples now or not. I doubt it, since they didn't really expand the pool bar itself (behind the bar) that I know of. Hopefully someone who is there or has been there since it reopened will know. I'll be back May 31, and I guarantee I will be inquiring at the pool bar ASAP. ;)

The last one I had at the beginning of the month was twice the size of my head...NO JOKE. It was heavy as all heck and I had to use both hands to lug it around LOL. I dropped the lid on the way to our table @ Ohanas and felt like a moron. Nevermind that I was totally feeling the effects of said drink due to my fasting prep for Dinner there. Still, part of the experience for me is drinking out of an enormous pineapple. Its fun. My Son firmly believes the Lapu Lapu is SpongeBob's house.
