Laptop computer. How old was your child?

I got my first computer that was solely mine when I was 12. I got my first laptop when I was 16 or 17.

I got my laptop just over two years ago when I started college. I was 18. My dad has a work laptop, my mom has her own laptop and we also have a desktop. I use my laptop mostly as a desktop, though. It's too heavy to bring to classes and doesn't have a very good battery life. I did have my own desktop when I was about 13, though. It had dial-up internet, too!

I got a laptop at age 48  My first computer at age 45.

Grandson is a senior this year and uses the family computer. We will buy him a laptop when he graduates high school and he can have it for college.

I saved up for one and finally had enough to get one when I was 13. I'm on my third laptop now and all of them I had to buy myself.

We got our DS a laptop when he was 8 - DH was being deployed for a year and the new laptop had the webcam so we could talk that way.

His laptop has also become mine now because my desktop isn't working so waiting for DH to come back and fix it.

My son was 12. He's on his 2nd laptop. My husband uses his old one. I just got one for myself at 56, lol! I was using the dinosaur tower in the office but I had laptop envy. Husband has a netbook for his business. Loads of my son's friends have netbooks.

Most of the high school students on my bus have one of their own. I'm guessing it's getting pretty necessary for school.

Better wait to make sure what his college requires. Some have a specific contract and will allow only one type. Our extended family has run into this twice out of 4 active college students.

My kids 13-11-and 9 all want one..EACH. I told them not until high school. So for my DS, that will be next year, when he is 14. Probably for his birthday in June, since he will be out of the 8th grade, and technically a high schooler.

I bought my two oldest children laptops for college. My youngest DS just started high school & they advised us to purchase one. They had a grant of $500. per student if you showed them the receipt. He's thrilled & takes awesome notes in class. His handwriting isn't the greatest but his work on the laptop is fantastic.

Oh good 12 1/2 isn't sounding so young after reading your posts:goodvibes

Anyone else??

I got mine when I was around 12 or 13 I believe for Christmas. I can't exactly remember. It's incredibly useful for school things, I don't know how I could go to school without it now. (I don't take it with me, but I like doing work at home and writing papers is so much easier.)

DS got his this past May for HS Graduation. It is for college and he uses it a lot.

DD, 14, wants one but there is no need. We (DH and I) have a laptop and a desktop that she can use when needed. I like to see what she is doing. She will get one for HS graduation like her brother. :)

My kids get their own computer when they start college. So far, no one has chosen a laptop, though. The oldest, who has a B.S. in computer science, wanted a powerful PC desktop. His younger brother chose a desktop Mac, both because he liked it and because that's the strong recommendation in his program. He's a visual arts major with a big music collection and didn't want to sacrifice the memory or big screen, so it suited him fine.

I think my teen is fine without his own computer. We have a PC and a Mac, and, like DH and me, he's free to use them both. He has a definite preference for the Mac, though.

I'd like to have a laptop as a toy, but I don't see one becoming my main computer any time soon.

Thank you so much for this info, I had no idea.

Yeah I wish I didn't buy my dell laptop in purple/pink with blossom flower print on it... I could have given him mine.:surfweb:

Both kids are good on computer. They learn how to use them in school so young now and that's fine, they can teach me a thing or two.

I do let them go on internet now and he knows I'm monitoring...:3dglasses
He's been asking for one of his own for a while now.

Try this website and he make want it after all...

I have a Miami Dolphins skin on mine and it looks pretty awesome.
