where do canadians buy laptop batteries , any canadian sites that are well known and well priced? Those with techie background.. how long should a battery last before buying a new one...thx

I've only ever had one die on me once and bought it online from a link given to me by tech support from HP.

I bought mine directly from my laptop manufacturer, which was Apple. I got 986 charging cycles out of it or 3.5 years.

In general, a laptop battery will last about 3-4 years before it degrades noticeably. If yours is much newer, make sure that you don't have background programs that are sucking up your processor. Microsoft has a a widget for Windows 7, and there are freeware versions for earlier O/S. Battery life is affected by how busy your processor is, and stated values are based on a pretty light load. Watching movies can take a LOT more power for instance and drain a battery in an hour or so.

If your laptop is 3-4 years old, I'd buy a cheap replacement off eBay. I got my last Compaq battery for about $15 all in from a place in Hong Kong. Lasted through the final two years of laptop life. At 4 years, your laptop is about 80% depreciated. Why spend top dollar for parts? Get the cheapest thing that will keep it going a bit longer. I am aware that there may be quality issues with 3rd party parts, but really would you buy top of the line parts for a very old car?

thanks for all helpful tips and input.. i have been surfing at canadian sites and boy.. these batteries are expensive ! i will do more research.

I bought a new "set" of batteries for our 3 cordless phones at about half the retail price, and I think dh got a new battery for his laptop at this place. (I can't find the receipt for dh's laptop battery but I'm sure I used it for the phone batteries.) It's a guy working out of his garage in Ontario--I got good personal service from him and a fair price. Actually, now I remember, we had a postal strike in 2011 and he shipped to me by courier at no extra cost so I wouldn't have to wait until Canada Post sorted things out. http://www.batterybuyer.com/

HTH.

If you are looking to get a new battery I would suggest getting a 9 cell battery. It last up to 7 hours where as a common 6 cell only last 4 hours. A 9 cell is bulkier and heavier but having the extra run time is great.

eBay all the way. If you can deal with the shipping time from China (about 3 weeks) you'll save a fortune.
