lanyards

do we need lanyards?
If you wear a castaway member(silver, gold, platinum) lanyard, a CM will figure you know what’s going on and they don’t have to offer common knowledge information. It’s amazing what people didn’t find out while on the cruise, that they found out after. Like Mickey Bars and Cake of the day. It’s nice to keep a few singles in the card holder so you can give a cash tip also, sometimes you want a tip of person who you did not purchase anything from. It helps with extra perks along the cruise too.

An excellent reason to not be looking for CC lanyards for your first cruise like so many do! There are other places to get non CC lanyards.

IMO, yes. you can buy them from shop Disney or Amazon.

on our cruise in February, we did not take them out of the lanyard when boarding the ship, paying at bingo, paying at coffee shops etc. we just gave them our room number and last name.

but, I expect that to change back to when they would scan them.

you will receive one for each member of your party on your second cruise.
if you visit the DVC kiosk onboard, they will give you one also.

you can also visit the DVC kiosk and get their gift each day. We are DVC members but on our cruise, anyone could get the daily gifts.

we got lanyards, draw string bags, stickers, Riviera print (declined this because we have 2 already), I can’t remember what else though.

they had one lanyard for sale in the shop on the ship. But, guest services would probably gift them to you also. They will just tell you that they “normally don’t“…. just be nice and they probably will. We made friends with several people and they said as much.

I like the castawa lanyards because they are lightweight and I am sensitive to anything on my neck. I can not wear necklaces but I barely notice the lanyard.

That is weird - in the past you've always had to be DVC to get the DVC stuff.

You don't have to, but it's a little handy.
I don't wear a lanyard, but putting my key card in one made it easier to find in the abyss of my day bag. I brought a spare from home so I wouldn't have to buy one on the ship.

I wore a lanyard on our first cruise in 2019, but I decided it made me feel too much like I was at work, so when we went in January, I just carried it (and my son's) around in a small purse/phone bag.

If this is your first cruise then yes, you will probably want to buy some to carry around the KTTW card. Party City used to have some inexpensive, cute Disney ones. If it's your second+ cruise you will get one when you check in at port.

Note that lanyards are given for each cruise guest individually. If your party has two silver members and two new cruisers, then you'll get two silver lanyards. I know this because we were in a similar situation in February when we took two new people with us.

On the second cruise (we did two!), the new cruisers were technically silver members, but their status hadn't gone through the system in time to distribute lanyards to the stateroom. When we went to guest services, they actually checked with shoreside to verify that the new people were silver members before getting out lanyards for them. No freebies without status, I guess!

sorry i was assuming that the OP was traveling with the same family/party. but yes, depending on your cruise status, you get the silver, gold, or platinum lanyard or no lanyard if it is your first cruise.

the guest services has lanyards are not "status" lanyards just extras they have like Star WArs, Marvel etc.

idk if it is Weird but like i said our ship was not at capacity. I am DVC and my daughter is NOT. She got all the DVC daily gifts.

I did get the large magnet (made up of smaller magnets) on my door on arrival and ONE Dvc lanyard but my daughter and I both got another one day from the DVC ladies.

If you went to the DVC desk together, that would be why your daughter also got stuff. They shouldn't be giving out things to non members, but in the same family I'm sure they will. (If she went alone and said my mom is a member, they may have given her stuff then as well.) We were always able to get stuff for everyone in our room.

You do not need lanyards. You need the card to access your room and to get off and on the ship. Supposedly you no longer need it for charging things to the room, they just ask your room #. The card easily fits in a wallet.

A few lanyard tips:
If you are sailing on The Dream or Fantasy and maybe the Wish??
To make the lights work in your cabin there is a key card slot but any gift card old hotel key card will work. I use an old hotel card and just pull it up enough to turn out the lights *** it does not affect the air conditioning.
Getting off and on the ship everyone (kids included!!) have to tap their key card. The adult in the cabin has to tap first and then the kids. If the adult is carrying the kids keycards I like to keep each card in a separate plastic pouch so that I don’t have to take the key cards out of the pouch.
If the key cards are back to back in the pouch or a wallet they won’t open the cabin door.

I have to wear a lanyard with an official ID at work: I just can't wear one on vacation. DW found a phone case/wallet that we keep our KTTW cards in the flap, the cove cafe card & DW's beer mug token :) We're many times platinum & we just immediately give the SR host our lanyards (and sling bags - groan). We use the app quite a bit for chatting, keeping track of events and the phone camera.

I got a lanyard on my first Disney cruise. The check-in agent just handed it to me; I didn't ask. I imagine it happens occasionally.

Lucky!

Before the shutdown, lanyards were given to Castaway Club members at check-in. Now, they're left on the bed in the stateroom. I wonder if you somehow ended up in the CC line and got a lanyard when you weren't meant to.

Nope. I even said to the agent that I was excited to be taking my first DCL cruise.

Wait while you make a good point that it fits in a wallet. Slightly less than half of the wallets don’t have a pocket to go into so need to go into a purse. While I have been known by my family and friends for having the smallest purses, the lanyard wins for me hands down! Guys have it so good. I never find clothes with pockets, I’m probably too cheap.
