Lake Mead is losing water faster by the day!

this site reports a significant increase in the rate of water leaving lake mead.

What's going on? Where is it going?

I have no idea if this applies to Lake Mead but Lake Lanier in my area is our main source of water for quite a large area. The Army Corps of Engineers contorols the output and rate. It's a source of controversy around here as it seems like the let out too much.

This site says there was a slight earthquake in the Las Vegas area on Friday.

At the bottom of the article, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area account says there were inaccurate readings released earlier and that they've since been corrected.

But, in general, the drought out west is the cause for the lower than normal lake levels.

I'd check California. From what I've heard, the uber-wealthy Hollywood crowd is getting desperate trying to justify their golf course green lawns in the midst of a bone dry drought.

The data you have says that rivers supplying the lake are at 52% of normal for this time of year. So, I'm guessing lack of rain is the cause of the low lake. Output is 5.6 million over input.

Lake Mead supplies a huge area of water. The drought means that water is not being replaced by the mountain snow melts. So you have water going out and none coming in. It could dry up much quicker than anticipated if it is not managed properly. I remember my first trip to Lake Mead when I was 9. I was there again 5 years ago and wow what a difference 20+ years makes. It is a huge problem out west. You see the resource in danger of disappearing then you go to the strip and see huge fountains and other water features. It is a precarious situation.

Isn't the water used in the fountains etc., in Las Vegas, recycled water?

The water is recycled however the outdoor water features have to add water frequently in the summer months due to evaporation.

There just isn't enough inflow to replenish it.

Municipal and residential water usage accounts for just 15% in California. Total Urban usage accounts for just 20%. 80% of California's water usage is agricultural. Perhaps billionaire agribusiness needs to stop growing Almonds, most of which are exported, in areas that are ill suited to them without hefty watering? Or perhaps they should stop growing alfalfa, a very water intensive crop, out in the imperial valley? That's a desert by the way. Or maybe they should tell the Oil industry to stop using more water than San Francisco and San Diego combined? That's not to mention they're contaminating aquifers California can't afford to lose. Or maybe they could tell Nestle to stop bottling water and sending it all over the place. Hollywood represents a drop in the bucket.

California doesn't take water from the Colorado River upstream of Lake Mead anyway, as far as I know.
