I have a couple questions about this....

1. Is it only for guests of the participating resorts?

2. If so I'm done....If not...

2a What time is it at?
2b Is it year round?

thanks

We've only done this one time. It was during a breakfast at 1900 Park Fare in the GF. A scientist type guy comes around, takes the kids out to the garden area and gives them a little talk about chemical-free gardening and why they use lady bugs at WDW. Then each child got a match-box full of lady bugs. They got to release them in the gardens. Then each child got a sticker and a certificate saying that they had participated in the release. What really made our release so special is that Alice and Snow White were there too and helped my dd with her match-box!! So, I don't think you have to be staying at a resort. I would check around and see where they are doing the releases at the time of your visit.

There's so many of those lady bugs around here that we have to vacuum them up in the vacuum cleaner. Man do they bite. Hungrey little critters.

Ladybugs bite? I never knew that. Last fall we had an unussually warm spurt and ladybugs awoke from hibernation(sort of). There were millions of them everywhere. You couldn't look anywhere in air without seeing hundreds and undreds in flight. I even called the local museum because I had never seen it before. Turns out there were quite a few calls to the science museum.

On our 1st trip during breakfast at 1900 Park Fare, Mary Poppins asked DD if she wanted to go outside to participate in the lady bug release. We almost didn't let her go! (It was our 1st day there, she was 8 & we knew nothing about it. No research before leaving - DUMB!)

Anyway, we let her go, but didn't go with her to take pix or anything! Talk about missed opportunities!

I did a quick Google search - you should be able to find some info from one of these links.

This is definately not something I would need to do at Disney. Every October our house gets covered with ladybugs!!! I have seen enough of these creatures to last a lifetime!!!!

While at Epcot last May, our kids participated in the lady bug release in the World Showcase. The kids thought it was quite neat - they were each give a box about the sizeand appearance of a small matchbox filled with lady bugs. They opened the box and put the bugs on plants in the kid's play area with the gardens in the World Showcase. I think it was between China and Germany. The naturalist had so many boxes that Sarah and Danny each did 3 or 4 boxes.

Ladybugs bite? ...........

We live on a farm & get them quite often - although never in huge numbers. DS just go married & moved to town (~5 miles away) and they have quite a few in their apt. Their only complaint are the "insect carcasses" that get left behind.

However, I found this when I searched (I was curious about the biting)

"Asian ladybugs, like boxelder bugs, pine seed bugs and elm leaf beetles, are accidental invaders; that is, "outdoor" insects that create a nuisance by wandering indoors during a limited portion of their life cycle. Accidental invaders do not feed or reproduce indoors. They cannot attack the house structure, furniture, or fabric. They cannot sting or carry diseases. Ladybugs do not feed on people, although they will occasionally pinch exposed skin. Ladybug may leave a slimy smear and they have a distinct odor when crushed."

Evidently the Asian ladybugs survive the winter, unlike domestic ones.

The Asian Lady Beatles are not the same thing as the ladybugs you are referring to. The Asian ones are an orange/coppery color and do hibernate indoors, usually in the walls. They are a nuisance. They were brought here "supposidly" to help decrease other bug populations, but in fact, turned into a problem.

The ladybugs that are released are the good beneficial bugs, not the yucky ones that come in your house in droves of 1000's.
