How do you do it yourself with out making a mess an getting dye in places you don't want it? Side of tub, toliet lid yes even when DD helped the other DD color her hair they got dye on the toliet lid.

Doesn't seem to matter how careful I am I end up with dye somewhere that I don't want it an it stains.

I haven't had a problem getting it on things in the bathroom. I have dripped it on my clothes, but I'm usually in pjs so I'm not worried if they get stained. I put some of the conditioner that comes with the color around my hair line so that it doesn't get on my skin.

Try Excellence Cream by Loreal.

I used to have the same issue.

But the EC comes with a neat comb attachment that puts the coloring in my hair so quick and easy, and best of all, it NEVER drips anywhere!!

I love it! I have even used the comb on other brands of coloring.

Yes, I like the comb so much I saved it!! That way, I can buy what's on sale and use the comb in place of the regular tip.

Thanks for the info. I'm also going to try coloring myself for the 1st time. Cant afford the (5.00 plus tips my guy charges. Now if ican figure our what color looks good on brown hair without making me look fake-lol! I'm so nervous-lol!

I usually put the color into my gloved hand and then work it into my hair like shampoo. I find if I bring the bottle to my head, I get issues with drips and messes.

I just cover the toilet seat & floor with old towels, and I remove everything from the bathroom I can...I have a small bathroom though.

For the tub...comet or soft scrub with bleach works well.

Whatever you do, don't sneeze. Yes, I learned that lesson the hard way.

I really like Garnier Nutreisse (sp?), leaves my hair soft and kind of highlight-y, not monotone.

When I first started coloring, I would cover the floor, toilet, etc. with newspaper. Now that I've gotten better at it, I don't have many problems. If you do drip it in the sink or on tile, the key is to wipe it up right away with a wet paper towel. The longer it sits on the tile the harder it is to clean. I have an old towel that I put around my shoulders to keep stains off my clothes. After it dries, it's safe to wash it with other items without the dye rubbing off. The towel is all stained but I've never had it transfer to other towels in the same load. If you get dye on your skin, wipe it off right away. Also, when applying the dye to your hair, put the bottle tip right next to your scalp. Apply it in lines and then use your fingers to spread it around (wearing gloves, of course). Just cover small areas at a time. If you try to squirt on too much at once, it will start dripping all over the place.

I think the most important thing I've learned is that not everyone has to use the whole bottle. My mom has short hair and can get by with half a bottle. In fact, she only mixes half at a time so she can use it twice. My hair is just above my shoulders and I use about 3/4 of the bottle. If you over-saturate your hair, it will start to drip. The longer you dye your hair, the easier it will get!:)

I just dyed my hair today and made a mess!!! Sports bra, 2 drips, countertop-big stain. Timely thread because I was frustrated-darn gray hair!! PLus, kiddies kept coming in and I was sure they would get stuff on them or their clothes. Painful!!

sports bra is a great idea...but I really dont dye my hair...just some highlights...

dye seems too messy...

I agree, I like the Loreal Excellence Cream, too, it doesn't make nearly as much of a mess as the other stuff. I like to be able to go watch tv or something while I wait for it to process. I do still keep an old towel wrapped around my shoulders just in case.

If you like the L'oreal with the tip, try the Perfect 10. All the work covering the stubborn grey is done in a flash. Personally I color with nothing on top to stain except my skin! I alos have a cleaning cloth at the ready to pick up any quick drips. Off to the side I leave some cotton balls and sea breeze. If i get color on me or the sink top I just wipe it with the sea breeze and it all comes off. I've been coloring my hair for 18 years and have not really ruined anything--a few stains on old towels, but nothing else.
I too save the bottle with the comb on it to use with whatever I can get on sale with a coupon. The only reason I tried the perfect 10 was becasue I had a coupon for one free and they were bogo so 2 boxes free! Perfect for vacation this year since we will be away 3 weeks and it is inevitable that I will need to touch up--10 minutes how cool is that!

I have a "winter" haircoloring bathrobe, and a "summer" haircoloring bathrobe. Old ones, that have stains all over them. Then I just take it off to hop in the shower. I never thought of putting a towel over the sink.:confused3 I just put a little bleach on my counter when I get a stain, and leave it there until it dries. Wipe it off, and it's good as new.

I like the Loreal Excellence Cream as well. I have never made a mess and the color comes out shiny and even every time. I thought I would save a few $$ this last time and I bought the color that was on sale. What a MESS! I ended up with color all over the counter, floor, me, and the color didn't even go on evenly. To make matters worse, it didn't even color all my gray:scared1: I think that a trip to the salon is in order to have them fix it, but I don't know how long I have to wait between colorings.

I have tried the Perfect 10 as well. While it did go on pretty good and was quick (I still left in on a little longer for stubborn grays) it didn't cover all the gray. (I am about 10% gray, not that much for it not to cover it IMO)

I also love the loreal cream, but I will admit that I use whichever loreal is on sale. If I use the liquid color, I cover all surrounding areas with old towels. I wear the same shirt everytime I color. And I use the conditioner on my forehead near my hairline to I don't get staining.

I use the Garnier Nutrisse. I don't really have any problems with drips. But My mom and I dye our hair together, she puts the color on mine, then I put it on hers. We usually wear old t-shirts and wash our hair out in the sanitary tub connected to the washing machine.

Thanks everyone! This time I bought the loreal cream might try the comb in kind next time tho good idea about saving the bottle an the comb.

OK this time I covered floor an sink toliet ect in bathroom did my roots at the sink then stood in tub with the shower curtain closed to do rest of hair good thing I did as I splatter walls of shower an dripped on floor a lot! Had a rag for quick wipe ups as I went too that was better. Good thing I got in shower tho cause I'd have splatter my freshly painted bathroom walls not FUN!

If the comb in color's comb has teeth as close together as the loreal cream is then it would be useless for me. VERY VERY CURLY hair an I can't even get a pick thru it without it being wet an lots of conditioner on hair. Then it's a slow process.

As a kid not allowed to cut my hair hair past my waist didn't know about wetting hair using conditioner an picking hair out with a pick. IT took me at least 45 mins every morning just to brush my hair. At that time it was very very thick curled up almost to my shoulders I had the biggest afro in 3 states a white girl not even tryin to have an afro lol

Even tho my hair has thinned out a lot I can still make an afro by brushing hair then using a pick on it an it stays in that afro all by itself. TMI I know

I put an old sheet down in my bathroom and it covered every drip area I might hit.

Then, I wear the clothes I wear for bleaching the bathroom days, things with so many bleach stains I look like a clown.

I've been coloring my hair myself for years, so mostly the sheet is so my husband doesn't get nervous.

I use Colorsilk as it is always the cheapest. My hair grows unhumanly fast so I can't stretch out my dye days.

I use Henna and indigo to dye my hair and that eliminates the messy liquid dripping factor. It mixes up like a paste and i just use gloved hands to saturate my hair from root to tip. I also have a beauticians short cape to wear since the towel would never stay on me and my hair is past my shoulders & I didn't want it resting on me with the henna in it. The henna will dry and you can sweep up the little particles. I do put newspaper on the floor though and base my hairline but it doesn't stain my skin too bad.

When I color my hair I wear the same old hair colored stained t-shirt and stand on an old towel. I put vasaline around my hairline, ears and nape of my neck and always wear the gloves provided. When I am done I hop in the shower and rinse my hair and then rinse the shower very well.
