Kool aid as a hair color

If I remember right (I did it mid-90s!) boil the water, add the Kool-Aid, DO NOT add sugar (perhaps that's why one PP's friend said it attracted bees?)

If you want red, Black Cherry works great. My hair was like a medium-light brown back then, worked great.

Thanks for the info...I think we might try this for my dd. She has been wanting a red or pink stip for a very long time. :goodvibes

nope, not new. I did this in high middle school (circa '95)
Just mix the concentrated packet (no sugar) with a little teeny tiny bit of water

This is not new my tween had tried to dye her hair with Kool Aid but her hair is medium dark brown and nothing will show up in her hair. It really only works if the hair is light colored to begin with.

People can also tie dye t-shirts & wool with Kool-Aid. Adding vinegar makes the dye hold better. Maybe add a bit of vinegar to the Kool-aid for darker hair.

I dyed my hair with grape kool-aid when I was in high school (in the 90's). My hair is dark brown, and it really only gave me a slight purple tint. It would eventually wash out, don't remember how long (maybe a week or two?).

Boil water, add kool-aid (regular kind, NOT sugar-free!), then when it cools soak your hair in it and wrap it up in a towel. I think we let our's sit for an hour, we were really determined to get the color!

I'm so excited to see this thread! DD8 has been bugging me for blue strips in her hair all summer but I wasn't about to use chemicals on her head (Nor pay for an 8 yr old to get a salon dye job.) You'd think I'd know about this - I'm well old enough to have heard of it before but never have.

What will happen to it in chlorine? We have a pool and she is also going for tryouts tomorrow for a swim team which will have her in a heavily chlorinated pool at least twice a week. She is in ours (light chlorine) daily.

There are hair extension things out there that come in all kinds of fun colors. They pretty much just stick on to your head. It's a nice, temporary way to try color-especially for an 8 year old that might change her mind in a week. They are about $5 around here. DD and her marching band friends do this every marching band season. You can get them at most hair salons and I would guess beauty supply stores as well.

When I was in elementary school in the early 70's a girl in the grade below me had her hair died green every year for St. Patrick's Day. It took MONTHS to wash out.

Was she Irish?

I swam every day in chlorine when I had the pink in my hair and it didn't change the color at all. Go for it!

A friend of mine told me it attracts bees... maybe she didn't do it right? ;)

I was going to say tell her to use Sugar Free but I see someone else says to use the reguler kind. Maybe they liked the color :confused3

Not necessarily, dd18 just did it about a month or so ago...She has fairly dark hair (at least medium dark brown as you mention above), she did NOT bleach it before hand and it came out nice and red/burgundy and now she can't get rid of it.:rotfl: but it does look nice.

My dd12 did it at the same time, her hair is just a tad bit lighter than dd18's , hers showed up for about a week and then it was gone.

DD18 has dyed her hair since then with actual store bought color (herbal essance maybe?) and the red kool aid dyed streak is still there and still pretty noticeable.

My God Daughter's hair is dark bown she used black cherry, it came out burgundy and she finally had to cut it out after more than a year. You could really see the color break between it and her natural hair color.
I wonder why some seem to stay forever and some wash out.

Hmmm I don't know. Mine faded out completely in about 3 months and my hair's blonde. Did the color break look bad? I'm asking because I wish my color would have stayed in as my hair grew, eventually becoming pink tips.

Maybe she dyed her hair with prepared kool-aid?? The sugar-free kind contains artificial sweetener and will make your hair sticky. The regular kind contains no sugar (as you are supposed to add your own sugar).

I used black cherry, too, and got a nice burgundy color.

This thread brought back some great memories of junior high in the mid 90's :rotfl:
