We are thinking of trying the Kona Kafe at the Poly for our next trip. Every time we have walked by it looked interesting.

Anyone have any comments about the restuarant, good or bad?

Many thanks....

Hi, Paul in Southern NJ, I'm in Southern NJ as well!!

We have yet to go to the Kona Cafe but we are going on our next trip in late Sept/early Oct. I am dying to try the Tonga Toast they have on the breakfast menu, it looks DELICIOUS!!! I know friends who have eaten there for dinner and they LOVE it and plan on going again on their next trip in late Oct. I've heard nothing but good things!!!

We went to MK one day for Early Magic Hours & it was getting very crowded by late morning. We decided to leave the park to get an early lunch since we'd had something very light that morning. We walked over to the Poly & arrived at the Kona Cafe somewhere around 11:15 am; there were still some diners from b'fast & they told us we'd have to wait while they set up for lunch. At 11:30 am, we were seated & had a fantastic lunch; in addition it was so relaxing & cool in there compared to outside in the MK. We also got a 10% AP discount. I remember loving the appetizers we picked - potstickers & crabcakes. My husband had the Asian Noodle Bowl; thought it would have been better if it had been a cold day. I can't remember if I had the stir-fried asian noodles or the beef teriyaki salad - whichever one I had was good! Desserts were also very good. I might just do appetizer/salad & dessert next time!

We ate a late lunch there earlier this year and enjoyed it. Upon recommendation, we left MK for lunch via Monorail and headed over to Kona. It was great, no crowds at all. I had a really good bbq pork sandwich. I forget what dh had, but we all had great desserts! I had a banana creme brulee that was worth the airfare alone:) DS (6) had a great ice cream cone with all sorts of edible decorations. We've heard wonderful things about their breakfast and french toast but have yet to fit it into our schedule. After lunch we then took the boat back to MK. It was a great, relaxing lunch that got us refreshed and away from the crowds for a bit. Have fun!

Kona is a MUST for us on every trip. We always have at least one breakfast there -- the food is wonderful and the coffee is outstanding! We've loved lunch there, too -- great choices, different from the fare at MK, a relaxing, lovely atmosphere. IMHO you cannot go wrong at Kona!

We ate here on the DDP at Christmas, the seafood was great and the Banana Creme Brulee was FANTASTIC. This is one we did not plan on, ran across it while touring the gingerbread displays, couldn't get in and made ADR's for later as the board comments had been so great!

We went there last October, and it was one of the unexpected highlights of our trip. Great food and service, a nice relaxing atmosphere, and an easy ride back to the MK. Also a good chance to tour a lovely resort.

We love Kona Cafe for dinner :thumbsup2

Matter of fact when we started our ADR planning for this Fall and were making a list of restaurants that were definites on our list, Kona Cafe came first unanimously!!

We enjoyed our breakfast there on our last trip. The Tonga Toast was delicious as was my sister's shrimp omlet. We have and ADR for this trip, too!

:wave2: Hello from Central NJ!

When DH and I stayed at the Poly for a week a few years ago, we had breakfast at Kona Cafe every morning. Love the 100% Kona press pot coffee! All the food was hot and delicious, and there are many choices on the breakfast menu. The Tonga Toast is awesome...better for sharing for us.

We had lunch there once and it was great, and a great dinner once as well.

Every trip since we have made it a point to have breakfast there once or twice.

Enjoy!

Hmmmm, I am just going to post an excerpt from my dining report from last September - hope this answers some questions. We were at the Kona for dinner.

Wednesday, September 28, Kona Café (dinner)
We had spent the day in the Magic Kingdom, and I had picked Kona for a combination of the menu and the locale. Plus, I got to ride the monorail again.
We were paged to be seated after about 15 minutes. Husband had totally gotten into the dining plan at this point, knew that he was going to get to pick lots of food, and had studied the menu to decide what he wanted.
We were a little taken aback by the paper placemats and casual appearance of the restaurant. Frankly, I expected something a little fancier based on the menu contents and price. Whatever, I knew the food was going to be good, so wasn’t worried about it. The restaurant was more inviting as a family atmosphere than either California Grill had been or Le Cellier was going to be. I could see bringing my kids here.
After we were seated the waiter (don’t remember his name) asked us if we were on dining. I can’t do anything but be honest. He then explained which items on the menu counted for appetizers and whether anything was off-limits for entrees. I really don’t remember if there was. I later asked if I could make a substitution for the vegetable listed as the side for a different one, and they agreed to do so without a problem. Husband had the Kona chowder as an appetizer, I had the crab cakes. They were different from any crab cakes I had ever had before, and I have had a lot of crabcakes. Still good, just different. Husband ended up with Filet Mignon for his entrée. He likes steak a lot.
I had the teriyaki beef with asparagus instead of whatever vegetable it is supposed to come with. It was delish.

We had carefully analyzed our dessert choices, and, as we are inclined to do, had sort of wanted the same desserts. We both had the Kilahuea Torte, which was very rich and very yummy. It was what I imagine the lava cakes to be that others have described. Very chocolaty, warm chocolate syrup in the middle, a nice garnish of tropical fruit puree on the plate. I liked it a lot.
Pictures!

We ordered coffees afterwards. Husband had a cappuccino and I had a latte. I gave my card to the waiter to pay and told him to charge the extra to the room (Husband had also had a soda with dinner.) He told us that everything was covered. I said that we would take whatever they wanted to give us. When he came back he said that I had been right and that we did have an extra drink, but that they (he and his supervisor) had comp’d it out because he had already told us it was covered. This pleased me.
Total cost: $101.10 (2 TS credits)
Overall grade: A- (because of the bare tables and paper placemats).

I have only read rave reviews about this restaurants breakfast, lunch and dinner. We finally ate there for breakfast last week, and I was so excited. It was excellent. My favorite breakfast, easily...Tonga Toast is yummy!

We ate at Kona last week for the first time for dinner and really enjoyed the meal. I just posted a review as part of my restaurant reviews, but we all liked our meals, the desserts were fabulous, and it was very accessible from the Magic Kingdom by monorail but much better food than in the Magic Kingdom. We will definitely return, especially if we are on the dining plan again as our total bill for four (me, dh, dd10 and ds7) was $160.

Only went there once, for breakfast just so I could get the Tonga Toast I had heard so much about! We were seated right away (had a 10 am ADR, but showed up at 9, as we wanted to head to Blizzard Beach that day), had great service, great food, overall, a great meal. We'd love to go back there next time for lunch or dinner!

We went there last week for lunch. Spent the morning at MK, took the monorail over, then returned to MK later.
DW and I both had the plate lunch with chicken with peanut sauce and it was absolutely delicious. Some of the best food we had.
Our only complaint was that our server took forever each time we asked for anything. It wasn't busy or anything, he just seemed to be taking his own sweet time.
But the food and atmosphere were great and we'll definitely be back.

Loved Kona. Now so many people know, it will be crowded! :teeth: DH and I ate there twice for dinner(cancelled another ADR to eat there a second time) and once for breakfast. Wonderful food and service. Fabulous desserts. I WANT TO GO HOME TO WDW & THE POLY!!!
