Hmmmm, I am just going to post an excerpt from my dining report from last September - hope this answers some questions. We were at the Kona for dinner.
Wednesday, September 28, Kona Café (dinner)
We had spent the day in the Magic Kingdom, and I had picked Kona for a combination of the menu and the locale. Plus, I got to ride the monorail again.
We were paged to be seated after about 15 minutes. Husband had totally gotten into the dining plan at this point, knew that he was going to get to pick lots of food, and had studied the menu to decide what he wanted.
We were a little taken aback by the paper placemats and casual appearance of the restaurant. Frankly, I expected something a little fancier based on the menu contents and price. Whatever, I knew the food was going to be good, so wasnt worried about it. The restaurant was more inviting as a family atmosphere than either California Grill had been or Le Cellier was going to be. I could see bringing my kids here.
After we were seated the waiter (dont remember his name) asked us if we were on dining. I cant do anything but be honest. He then explained which items on the menu counted for appetizers and whether anything was off-limits for entrees. I really dont remember if there was. I later asked if I could make a substitution for the vegetable listed as the side for a different one, and they agreed to do so without a problem. Husband had the Kona chowder as an appetizer, I had the crab cakes. They were different from any crab cakes I had ever had before, and I have had a lot of crabcakes. Still good, just different. Husband ended up with Filet Mignon for his entrée. He likes steak a lot.
I had the teriyaki beef with asparagus instead of whatever vegetable it is supposed to come with. It was delish.
We had carefully analyzed our dessert choices, and, as we are inclined to do, had sort of wanted the same desserts. We both had the Kilahuea Torte, which was very rich and very yummy. It was what I imagine the lava cakes to be that others have described. Very chocolaty, warm chocolate syrup in the middle, a nice garnish of tropical fruit puree on the plate. I liked it a lot.
Pictures!
We ordered coffees afterwards. Husband had a cappuccino and I had a latte. I gave my card to the waiter to pay and told him to charge the extra to the room (Husband had also had a soda with dinner.) He told us that everything was covered. I said that we would take whatever they wanted to give us. When he came back he said that I had been right and that we did have an extra drink, but that they (he and his supervisor) had compd it out because he had already told us it was covered. This pleased me.
Total cost: $101.10 (2 TS credits)
Overall grade: A- (because of the bare tables and paper placemats).
