Has anyone had the chance to try the Kona Island Sushi Bar in the Polynesian yet? I'm just wondering how the quality of the sushi is. Is the atmosphere a little better than Kona Cafe? (I found Kona Cafe to be like a big cafeteria in the middle of a hotel as far as ambience goes.) I'm very excited that there's a sushi joint so accessible to MK. I hope it becomes a permanent feature.

I haven't tried it (planning on going when I am down there), but from what I have read it is just a take-out place. A few tables but not a full sit down restaurant.

Correct me if I am wrong.

The sushi bar is just a small bar with about 5-7 stools to sit at the counter. In the morning it is the Kona Coffee Hut and then from 5-10pm it turns into the sushi bar. I had the Volcano Roll two nights in a row...it was AMAZING. Sushi is one of my favorite things to eat and this was probably the best sushi I have had. You can also order the sushi as an appitizer in the Kona Cafe restaurant...so if you'd rather not sit at the counter or do take out sushi, make ressies for the Kona Cafe and then order the sushi then.:lovestruc

What!! Yippee:cool1: . Why haven't I even heard about this place. I love trying sushi and we are eating at Konas in September. I know Konas takes the DDP, but can you get sushi as an appetizer at Konas on the DxDDP?

I'm really happy to hear that it's good and that you can get the sushi at Kona Cafe. That might just make me want to give KC another try. ThinkPinkTink, have you tried the sushi at the California Grill? If so, how does it compare? Because that was definitely the best sushi I ever had.

ooh yay! sushi at Kona!:cutie:
I asked a question about this a few weeks ago.... but no replys:sad2: But now i know and extra happy :teeth:
Thanks for sharing!

The Sushi at Kona was just as good as the sushi at Cali. I was very impressesd with the quality, presentation was beautiful as well. They have samples of the sushi in a glass case so you can see the varieties. Dh and I had sushi as many places as we could:) I was on the regular DDP so I am not sure about the delux plan...I am pretty sure you could use a CS for sushi at the Kona sushi bar, I paid OOP, because we would get the sushi at night as a snack before bed and I didn't want to use the CS for that.

Thanks for the review, as I will be visiting in August!:cool1:

ThinkPinkTink, one more question. Is it made fresh to order or is it just kept in a refridgerator? I'm very impressed that it compares to CG. That's awesome!

Yes it was made fresh to order, Captain Cooks has premade sushi in the plastic containers which I didn't try but at the sushi bar they made all the sushi fresh to order. I think you will be pleased with it, again, I eat ALOT of sushi and this is some of the BEST sushi I had.

Hi THANKS for this info!! We have ADR's at Kona and will DEFINITELY be ordering sushi as appetizers. Joan

I disagree with a PP. The sushi at CG is much better then at KC. KC is fair, but CG is in a class all by itself. I tried items in the same week at both, and it was no competition between the two.

Thats not to say KC was bad in any way. Everything was made to order, and fresh. But given the choice, I'd pick CG.

Is the sushi a temporary thing for peak season, or is it expected to stick around for a while? We are staying at the Poly in October and I would LOVE some sushi! My DBF is not a huge fan like me, so it would be great to be able to just pick some up for myself

As most have said, we thought the sushi bar at KC was fabulous! I remember hearing it was temporary, but it was still there during our stay and the sushi chef said they were there to stay! So that sounds like good news!

From what I've read about it, it's in a testing phase. So, I would think if it is successful, they will make it a more permanent establishment.

This is great to know. I am not a fan, but my sister is a huge fan. I'll send her that way next time.
