Any suggestions to help DD wake up without a nest of hair in the morning??? The knots are terrible.
The disers are experts at everything, right!

I have DD brush her hair before she goes to bed, it does help. And she brushes it before she washes it too.

We use a Johnson's product called No More Tangles. It comes in a green bottle and can be found with the baby shampoo. If we use it on DD's hair wet from the bath at night before combing and allow it to air dry, the knots are manageable in the morning. It has been around since I was a kid and works great. It can also be sprayed on stubbord knots in the morning to work them out.

I'm a hairdresser and when little girls come in with this problem we use paul mitchell mousse with conditioner or a product called the cream. It helps manage the knots and combing is easier. Also when bruching start from the bottom and work your way up.

If you wash her hair at night, spray a leave-in conditioner and try to make sure it is dry by the time she goes to bed. This has helped a lot for DD5. Her hair seems to tangle more if she goes to bed with it wet. You can also spray the leave-in in the morning before you comb her hair.

DD8 doesn't like to brush her hair that much - we got her hair cut shorter and she wakes up with no tangles. You can buy her a satin pillowcase - I have heard that these help hair not to tangle as much, if you can get the pillow to stay on the bed! :rotfl2:

Make sure to use a good rinse out conditioner as well after shampooing so the hair is softer. My girls use either Catwalk Oatmeal and Honey or H2O+ marine conditioner (like on the Disney Cruise ::MickeyMo ). The H2O+ especially softens so much that they have no tangles. It works too well for me to use - it takes all the texture out of my hair and it is too soft to hold a style.

I agree about the braid. Just don't do it too loose, if the hair can be pulled out easily if she's rolling around it can get just as matted. Brushing and detangler should help too. I haven't had much luck in finding a good detangler lately though, I used to love this baby one by Bath & Body Works but they discontinued it a while back. I actually still have over half of a bottle left, I save it for those real special occasions when there's a big knot! :rotfl:

I use suave rinse out conditioner on DD long hair, except I don't rinse it out. I comb it through after her shower and that's it. It doesn't get greasy or anything. Her hair is baby fine and knots and tangles easily. Since I started doing this it stays free of tangles and knots and is easy to comb at any time of the day. It also keeps the static away during the cold dry months. DD is happy and doesn't complain about having her hair brushed or combed anymore. She can do it herself most of the time. :)

Thanks ladies!! Lots of good things to try...
Bad thing is I don't braid very well...I know....I have had long hair my whole life and I stink at braiding!

I do use the leave in conditioner and detanglers but sometimes it is still just awful!

She has very fine hair so I can't do too much conditioner and such because her hair would just be too limp.

Thanks again Disers!

Or you could always try a cute short haircut, especially for summer~

My girls all have long hair (I used to also and have done LOL a few times), one used to be almost to her knees until we joined the pool last year and the chlorine killed it.:rolleyes1

I use regular shampoo and conditioner (not baby stuff) and detangler. We brush and not comb hair ever, unless we need a long part that the brush can't do well. Brush hair morning and before bed and often a few times during the day. PLUS they all have nice hair which helps that is very silky and only ones is a little on the thicker side. The pool is the only thing that ever game me problems with the lenght of there hair and after many tries I found just in a pony tail is the least amount of tangles when swimming. THe chlorine is another story on blond hair.

Here are my princesses

PaulaSue you have beautiful girls :)

I have one dd with really long straight thick hair and one with thinner curly hair but both are on the long side. My curly headed dd gets a 'messy bun' on mornings I don't want to fight with her and the brush. I bought a brush at wal mart that is meant to be ouchless and it's helped a LOT. They have ouchless combs as well. I buy the detanlger spray but when it's gone I fill the bottle with water and add a squirt or two of conditioner

When I was little I wasn't allowed to have long hair, b/c I have curly hair and I complained too much when my mom brushed it. Smart mom!

When I grew up and grew my hair, and had to deal with brushing it on my own, I found that two tight side braids did the trick while sleeping. One braid down the back didn't work, as I sometimes sleep on my back and it hurt my head.

OP, you'll learn to braid by doing it all the time! Braiding is actually one of the very few things I learned in Girl Scouts, and I not only learned to braid, but to french braid my OWN hair!

Actually, depending on how old she is, maybe you could find some women and/or girls who know how to braid, and she could learn to do it from them. If she's too little for that, then maybe YOU should find some people to learn from.

Good luck!:goodvibes

the library has cute book for girls on how to braid air there is also a book there on how to make hair clips also ( forgot the name ) for my girls we always brush , brush, brush. our hair is long and thick. my middle DD who is 12 hates to brush her hair because of the knots. we do the condtioner and leave it in aso no tangles works well to get the stubborn knots out.i would also recomend a hot oil treatment to help condition her hair and make it softer. this will help with the knots and headlice ACKK! lice cant hold on to oily hair . we do the no tangles in the morning when they go to put there hair up they use gel.. when tey goto shower if they cant rinse out all the get a little baking soda does the trick plus it leaves the hair nice and shiney too :) your girls are georgious!!

My oldest has waist length fine hair too. I have found that the salon brands make all the difference on her hair. I try to buy it in the fall (back to school time)when they sell it in liters. Normally you can buy them 2 for $25. Then I buy the $1 pump and it lasts a long time, plus as a bonus my younger two cannot waste.

Condition well, and make sure it's all rinsed. Buy her a nice high thread count pillowcase, or a satin one (Hannah's is pink satin and she thinks it's "princessey") I buy the conditioning spray for mornings, again the salon brands are better ingredients and go further, I do use the suave apple scent on my two younger ones though.

I bout dd the American girl book about the care and keeping of you. Also they have a book about hair I got for her too.

When I was little I had long hair. In fact I could sit on it. I had the same problem with knots but once I started braiding my hair I had no problems. Don't worry about not being a good braider the issue is to keep the hair from knotting not a hair do for the day.

spray/leave in conditioner. Spray it on and you should be able to gently work the kots out.

My DD4 has long, thick hair too. On her most difficult tangles, I glob in the conditioner and comb it through with a wide tooth comb while she plays in the tub, starting at the bottom and working up. To ease the pain of pulling, I hold the tangled section of hair at its base...it helps minimize the pull on her scalp. Once the big knot is worked down to its core, you can switch to a regular comb to work out the tiny knot. Rinse out the conditioner and squeeze dry with towel. I, too, am a HUGE fan of the braid at night and do it no matter what...even if she's already fallen asleep. It saves a ton of aggravation in the morning. I also use detangler spray on the off days as needed. In case you are wondering, we don't wash her hair everyday...more like every third day. As for the braid technique, I recommend Klutz's Braids and Bows (check amazon) for easy to follow instruction. Good luck! :cheer2:

My little girl just got a cute little bob for summer!! We are both blondes and not good for looooong hair. I know about those knots and tangles. As soon as her ballet recital was over-we got her hair cut. It's precious and looks so much thicker. Haircuts are not an option for some people though!! I did use the Johnson's No More Tangles(green bottle) and it was great!! But pool time cometh-so it was time!! Happy Hair Brushing!!!!

We tried everything we could get our hands on but my little ladies long fine hair caused too many weepy mornings for her.

I finally had to sit down and give her the option: Either work with me every morning no matter how tangled and painful it is (going to school with ratty hair is just not an option for me) or get it cut into a cute bob...

...at 7 she chose to get it cut. I prefer long-er hair on girls but the hassle just wasn't worth it...to either of us. And her hair looks healthier and it fits her personality...I didn't think it would look as good as long "classic" hair...but I was wrong!

Good luck...I hope the dis-ers can be of some help!
