Kmart removes "beyond inappropriate" costume after backlash

Well, here is this years offensive costume . . . I guess. Do not understand why this one created an uproar. I personally don't see the correlation people made with it, and why it garnered a removal from shelves and an apology by Kmart. My daughter had a play Doug & Melissa bride costume she specifically asked for when she was 5 years old. She loved it, along with her other pretend play costumes, and I saw nothing wrong with it. :confused3

Your thoughts?

I think things have gone too far. I see no problem with kids dressing up as something/someone they like/admire.

I don't think it's "racial appropriation", or "defending child bride/kidnapping", or any other "ulterior motive".

It's just fun.

I think with social media, most first world countries can be included in this. And I wouldn't be surprised if this happened in the states either.

But in this case it didn’t. And in the rush to make fun of the person who complained, which appears to have been the purpose for posting the article, all the fragile snowflakes who like to criticize people for being too sensitive, oblivious to the hypocrisy, missed that point. And it was just kind of fun to point it out.

Say what?!!!

I didn't make fun of anyone. I asked what people thought. I truly didn't understand why someone thought a child's bridal costume equated to sex trafficking and the like. So I asked for people's thoughts. Turns out most agreed that it was a stretch.

When did I even say snowflake? I DIDN'T!! I did think the person complaining reached for the correlation, but I said YMMV.

Good grief, relax.

I know what the ones from BB&B look like, and plenty others from different stores. They are a Halloween novelty item, and nothing more.

Technically, I don’t think pumpkins can wear blackface. I mean that is a black plastic pumpkin with white features. It seems a black pumpkin could have any other color features and not be racist, it’s just the white that is being called out. Or maybe I am wrong and all black pumpkins are bad, who knows anymore. maybe intent should sometimes be considered before all the pointing and yelling commences....context...anyone?

Same goes for a bride costume.

What does this mean for all of those folks who dress up flower girls as miniature brides? :confused3

I get the human rights concern, but I think that claiming that Halloween costumes are promoting child marriage is a real stretch. If that were the case, we would also have issues with costumes like gangsters and pirates.
It's still early yet. Plenty of time to get offended by that.

Some people really do wake up each morning and think “what shall we be offended by today”.

Must be a tiring way to live.

The bride costumes have been around forever and a day. Most dress up trunks you can buy for children includes a bride. They don’t mean anymore now than they meant 30 years ago—a child wants to dress up like a bride. If you don’t feel comfortable dressing your daughter as a bride, don’t buy the thing. Sort like I didn’t let Dd wear the “sexy” or “slutty” whatever costume.

Pumpkins cannot wear blackface. They can be black but they cannot wear blackface as they are—you know, a pumpkin. Now you can pick or grow or buy a black pumpkin or you can paint one black. But that’s not blackface. Blackface is a make up used to make someone’s skin darker. Pumpkins are not “someone’s”. They are pumpkins. And I am almost positive that whoever made the pumpkins that BB&B sold made them black simply because black is one of the colors of Halloween. Simple and obvious right?

I didn’t make the connection at all.

And I doubt many “child brides” around the world wear western style bridal gowns with lace veils.

I only know when I was a kid I put various pieces of cloth on my head at times and got married to Davy Jones. Big frickin deal!

Those 'blackface' pumpkins are awful! Who thought those were a good idea? As soon as I saw them I cringed.

I'm (obviously) not going to post a picture of 'blackface', and I'm typically on the sensitive/offended/outraged side, but:
  • It's not black'face', it's entirely black.
  • Just like almost all humans - which a Jack o' lantern is not - of every race, the sclera are white.
  • Just like almost every human - which, again, a decorating be holiday symbol is not - of every race, the teeth are white.
  • It's. A. Pumpkin.

OK - I think I’ve got it. In the past week or so I’ve been woke to the fact we must purge society of the following:
  1. The OK hand gesture
  2. Saying ladies and gentlemen and/or any combination thereof
  3. Saying hello
  4. Black jack o’lanterns
  5. Bride costumes for kids

Have I missed anything? Somebody help me out here. The list gets longer daily and I’m getting “sensitivity burn-out”. :faint:

Ok I missed the hello thing but can’t say I’m surprised that for some reason or another people would find it offenive
At the rate society’s SJW are going everything we do or say will de deemed offensive within 20 years.

Something's wrong. I'm no longer getting the weekly "Things To Be Offended By" list anymore.

Do you know how embarrassing it is to continue to be offended by something that's two week's out of date?
