Kitchen design - (Updated w/ info)

I would have done red or burgundy with that combo, stainless steel or balck appliances. Could have also done a deep navy or raspberry.

I did add in the burgundy however I prefer not to repeat that. It is limiting.

After that house I found out that I am a "warm colors" person. I can't go back.

Unless, I move to the coast or an island then I would go cape cod/beachy look with the white cabinets.;)

You can do blue with brown as well. That is more my color palate. I have to be able to toss in a warm color feel.

Well jennassis, while I agree that I would go with a granite or stone type look, it may be out of budget for the OP. Your counter looks great, but I have always been wary of having tiled countertops, especially in a kitchen, because of the grout. I have visions of spaghetti sauce stained grout or it being a constant cleaning event.

Believe it or not, DH is a realtor and most realtors would say a counter top is easy to change so it would not be a "dealbreaker" for most people when looking at/buying a house. When I was house hunting I found that to be true. I never really noticed a "cheaper" countertop, but what I did notice was an expensive granite countertop that I didn't like and then I had the thought "God I hate that but it would be a shame to change it because I am sure it's an expensive granite and I wonder how much work & cost is involved with changing that?". And believe me, some of the houses I looked at had some WILD granite which was SO not my taste. The granite we put into our kitchen when we redid it is a pretty low key look, so I don't think anyone would find it "offensive".

With the cheaper Formica tops,I just thought "Take off the clips pick the thing up and toss it our the back door".

that pic wasn't my house...just a pic from google of a tiled kitchen. Here is the bathroom we tiled this month. We're planning to do our kitchen the same way (and with the black grout, I am not worried at all about stains):

Well, I would definitely do a balck grout if I had a black tile and that would take care of the stain issue. That countertop looks nice as it is.

I have to disagree with the comments about white cabinets being "out." If you look through the kitchen magazines or talk to any designers they will tell you that white and the many off whites are "in." This of course could be a regional thing so I am talking about our tri-state area (NY, NJ, PA). It seems that everyone either goes really dark or white/off-white. I do agree that you should go with dark countertops. I do not personally like the light with the white except for one or two granites that I have seen.

We are also getting ready to remodel. We are trying to decide between off-white and dark stain. Our kitchen is also dark and I want to lighten it up so I will most likely go with what the cabinet company calls Linen. I think for your old farm house, white is perfect.

while blue is'nt my favorite color i have to say that a friend reno'd her kitchen a few years ago and when with the blue and while color theme and it's stunning. she went with the blues you see in french country kitchens along with white cabinates to a beautiful effect.

one of the more eye catching features is the upper few cabinates she had top lights installed in-she keeps a few items of cobolt blue glass in them, and in the evening when those lights are on and lighting the glass it's just stunning.

lol that is me. We just completed a kitchen remodel and I went with white, but not just because our home is beachy-casual; I just like white. It's what we always had there and I like the brightness, especially with the afternoon sun coming in the kitchen. We also have white wainscoting, so it all ties in.

I initially picked out the cabinets I just put in about 5 yrs ago. I looked at tons of others and I always went back to them. (And they're IKEA to boot - gasp! :rotfl2: ) It's so individual. We went with what we liked and didn't worry too, too much about trends (of course, we're not going anywhere anytime soon). Our kitchen went 45 years without a remodel last time. We tried to keep it "classic" this time as it may be another 45 before it's done again. (Kidding aside, I was quite happy to just have fresh and new.)

OP, the toughest decision we had was countertops, too. I initially bought some slate tiles at a discount to use on the countertops and we really loved the look of them. But we researched and realized that it probably was going to be more of a headache than it was worth, so we decided to save those for another project later on. We thought about, looked at and priced lots of other types of countertops, too. I wound up finding a granite person who matched Home Depot's sale price for granite but promised to have them in within a week of template, which, besides the good price, made the sale for me. I was tired of being without a sink and didn't want to wait the 4 to 5 weeks HD would have been (it would be longer than usual because of the holidays) as it had already been 2-3 weeks to begin with. So we went with granite for what turned out to be the same as what some of the laminates cost.

Colors we used are white cabinets, black hardware, baltic brown granite, and Disney yellow walls (think Mickey's feet, or even Gus in my signature's shirt). We kept our gray ceramic tile floor and black appliances. For lighting I went with a multicolor, but with yellow tones and black finish, tiffany pendant lamp over the table and sink, and my pub table is oak and the chairs are oak and black w/ matching chairs on the island. I don't know how this sounds here but it does look nice. :) DH did most of the work himself. (I will get some pictures when it's completely finished, we still have to put up the wine rack and paint the new windowsill.) BTW when the granite people came in to install the granite they commented on how lovely the baltic brown looked with the white cabinets. Also forgot to mention, I'm still deciding on backsplash (if any), but the one I liked a lot is a frosty white shaped in a teardrop that mimics the teardrops on the tiffany lights. (It was super expensive though :scared1: and I'm not sure it's right. I may just live without it for a while and give it more thought.)

I like your design and colors. I'm not a big blue person, but I like your choice and in the picture it looks nice. I'm not sure about the tan tile backsplash, but I'm often surprised at how nice something looks even though it may sound unusual. It's hard to decide. Make sure you get samples and put them up on your walls to just look at for a while. I had about 6 pictures of lamps hanging on my wall before I finally bit the bullet and ordered the tiffany (online, sight unseen). I completely love it and it is generally the first thing people comment on when they come in the kitchen.

A pic that gives an idea until I get a better one:

I love Baltic Brown! We just ordered it for DD's bathroom. Yours looks very brown while ours has quite a bit of olive green in it. Perfect for our green bathroom. We ordered our from Home Depot b/c we could not beat the price. They came out a couple of days later to make the template and they only needed a week for installation. I am sure it depends on the area and how busy your store is. Around here the granite installers have no work.

Pea n Me love the look. However it is nicely balanced with the granite & love the wainscotting. That really makes a kitchen in my book, the combo of everything.

Our house in TX has the most beautiful granite countertops, dark cabinets, dark distressed wood floors and somehow it all worked together. I think because we had huge windows and sun almost everyday.

And I could be persuaded French Country since I want the enormous stove hood & fancy center island.

I agree, everything together is what really makes or breaks something. I personally love bold color combinations. But I watch those darn HGTV and DIY shows and I see so many beautiful kitchens, I could be happy in many of them. :lovestruc

And to take it even further, I think that furniture style really is another key to whether a home is really put together or not. (Not that mine is, but I'm working on it, lol.) Although I've been studying decorating magazines and books for at least 20 years, I think that the SIZE of the furniture never really struck me as much as when I began watching shows like Designed to Sell, where it seemed commonplace that furniture too big for rooms made rooms look smaller. I admit, I was probably guilty of that as our home and rooms are fairly small. So along with renovating, I'm trying to rethink our furniture and other pieces. Hopefully I can get it right this time - eventually. ;) We are in the midst of a whole house renovation and it's quite challenging in many ways.

We just did our bathroom over with white cabinetry, tan granite (with flecks of dark brown, grey and silver) and blue walls and tan/grey tile floors. It looks great and I love the tan/white color combo.

asking a group of random DIS'ers about their personal styles is hilarious b/c we're all so different...:goodvibes
I have dark cherry cabinets, lighter gold-ish limestone countertops, hardware is oil-rubbed bronze, hardwood floors, stainless appliances.... Ben.Moore Hawthorne Yellow paint.... I get crazy compliments on my kitchen, though I know its not everyone's style... I don't think white cabinets are "out"... I think in a small space you can't go too dark w/ cabinets... that being said....
I think granite tile looks cheap---any open house I've gone to...if I saw granite tile, I automatically think, "too cheap to buy granite" ..I think a nice butcher block counter is very budget friendly and would look great in a farm-style house... You might be surprised with how affordable granite slab is these days....especially if you don't need a lot.... You could even ask if they have some "reject slabs" at a discount rate (like they were mis-cut or something)...

Instead of 12x12 granite tiles , there is a thing called a mini slab. Its 18 x26 and has the factory polished edge. Less grout lines than a 12x12 tile and a fraction of the cost of whole grante slabs.

I don't think white cabinets are "out". I've been looking at home decorating /remodeling magazines lately, and they're full of white cabinets. Regardless, I wouldn't base my decision on what's "in" right now -- unless you're remodeling for resale right this minute. Why? Because even if you sell in a year or two, "in" and "out" will be different: light cabinets, dark cabinets, hardwood flooring vs. tile. You'll never win the trendy game, so go with what you like, but stay relatively neutral.

Having said that, I personally lean towards the white cabinets, and I like butcher block countertops better than anything else, but other options are nice too. I would not go with granite tiles; the tiles look cheap to me. Take a look at the recycled glass options before you make up your mind.

Choose your backsplash first, countertop second. The backsplash shows more and is a little harder to choose.

Any chance you could post pics? Am looking to do our kitchen over.

What a gift to be talented and have that vision! Love decorating, not a clue as to how to actually "do it". Back in the states one gf had the magic & she helped so much - here am on my own. Watching alot of HGTV makes me realize WHAT I want but I may have to bring someone in to actually give a plan, to make it coherent.

Does anyone else watch Design Inc or Sarah's house? She does stunning white kitchens.

OP thanks for the thread.

White cabinets are DEFINITELY not out, I agree! We are doing a white wood cabinet with a glaze over it...and butcher block countertops. We are waterloxing the butcherblock...we will not be using it to cut on. Our house is a 70s ranch...one of my biggest pet peeves is an older home with a totally new lookinging kitchen...to me, granite counters do not belong in an older home.

If you want a GREAT forum with lots of helpful and educated (in decorating) people, check out this site...they are all so friendly and helpful!

here are a bunch of finished kitchens from REAL people, not designers...this site was compiled by a member on the gardenweb forum that I posted above. Just click on the blue name to see their kitchen...there are TONS of pages, and this link I provided is just for white!

Here is a thread on butcherblock countertops...these are specifically from ikea and very affordable! Mine will be darker in color, like one of the last pics posted, I think her name is jenwren..

here are some backsplashes to look at, mostly just for fun. Some of them are WAY over the top!

Anyway, just wanted to share some of my links. We are really excited about our new kitchen. It is nice to get lots of opinions and ideas. Good luck!

 Not "too cheap"...we're TOO POOR for granite slab.

However, if I find a place with an affordable remnant, we may go with a slab in the kitchen and the kitchen island. If I can't find that, we'll go with the tile. Looks terrific in the bathroom and I have no doubt it will look great in the kitchen too. Since we have no plans to sell the house it shouldn't be a problem, and ANYTHING will look better than the blue formica nightmare we have now.

I think your bathroom looks great and very modern. Certainly better than old formica or 60's tile and stained grout. :thumbsup2 Not everyone can afford to do expensive renovations and I tip my hat to anyone who makes improvements creatively. (Heck, we've seen it done many times on Designed to Sell if the situation warrants it and budget dictates it.)

I think that there are ways you can save on slab granite in your kitchen if that's the way you decide to go. People are itching for business right now. Go down to the fabrication shops and talk to them, see what they can do for you. We shared our granite order with someone in another state who was getting the same one, which saved us both money. And as I mentioned, they matched someone else's price, etc. Had I gone with another color, I could have saved even more. Where there's a will, there's a way.
