King Cobra on the lose in Orlando

One of the problems is that the antivenom is not very abundantly...the closet available is in Miami.

Whatever idiot issued a "permit" for that snake should be canned immediately.

Just stupid.

This irritates me. I hate the extra privileges given to the wealthy. You can bet any normal citizen would have been turned down for this permit. But, have money or be a reality star and you can get a license you don't really qualify for. There is a privately owned venom extraction farm near us. The work those guys do is invaluable! The chemical properties of venom hold so much potential in medical research. BUT, they are setup to be escape proof. Everything has been considered, the enclosures are inside the venom extraction room, which you can only access through another tight room. There are no gaps. Even ventilation is escape proofed. That is the only way to keep venomous snakes. Venom extraction is still pretty dangerous, but, it is performed in a way to prevent the escape of the snake no matter what happens to the handler. You would think with the amount of money the guy has to throw around that he could afford a decent enclosure.

I had friends who had to have their snakes destroyed when Florida banned the big pythons. They'd had these things for 20-30 years without incident. But, this guy gets to keep some fantastically venomous animal and his enclosures have prior escape issues. That's the difference between the have's and have not's.

Actually, the anti-venom is available in the Orlando area. HOWEVER, the only hospital who will administer it is in Miami. We have a local venomous snake handler who keeps his own anti-venom on hand, but, they won't administer it anywhere but Miami. I believe last time he got 'tagged' he had to self administer and then get airlifted to Miami. What really irritates me is that hospitals around here do not stock coral snake antivenom anymore because it is too expensive and instead you have to go to Miami for cobra antivenom if you happen to get bit by a coral snake while gardening. (the two venoms are similar enough to use cobra as a suitable replacement) Fortunately, they do still have rattlesnake antivenom.

The next time I get the urge to move back to Florida...I'll remember your "gardening with coral snakes" bit ;)

Yeah.. That's the part I hate most. I have some garden beds that need weeding desperately, but, then I think about how much fun it will be to airlift to Miami. Oh yeah, and still most certainly lose at least one finger because of that delay. I have shovel-pruned more pygmy rattlers and coral snakes than I care to count. And those are just the ones that don't run away when I stomp my feet and otherwise encourage them to go elsewhere. If they hang around threatening and won't shuffle off, they get shovel pruned. I'm still waiting for the day I find some fool's released exotic pet. We used to see iguanas regularly, but, between a few years of hard freezes and the reduced popularity I haven't seen a feral one in probably a decade now.

Lived way up north for a few years, and actually started to miss the thrill of "oh god, is it venemous!?!" while gardening.. Here it's more like gardening- extreme edition.

I think I have the solution for your wild kingdom...

Asphalt and a pet mongoose :)

LOL, would totally love a pet mongoose. Too bad I'd have to have a bigger bank account to get approved for that permit.. lol The semi-feral front yard cat is kind of a jerk and likes to leave partially alive snakes on the front mat. I have no idea how that cat is still alive since it seems to enjoy dabbling in primarily venomous offerings. I can't tell whether these items are gifts, or if cat is making attempts on my life. Can't help but think the mongoose would be more reliable.

:D
The animal actually doesn't "think" at all...

It just spends 99.999% either Instinctually looking for things to pinch with its venom sacks...or reproducing to Increase its numbers.

If I remember correctly...cobras leave the nest instinctually before hatch...because mommy would eat the kids if she hung around. They're snakes eaters...herpivores.

There's some Florida swamp snakes that are in for a rude awakening.

No idiot should have a cobra...just like the morons who ruined the Everglades with the pythons.

I mean... Why the hell is there a "permit" for a cobra? Why is it considered "freedom" to be able to own a snake from Indonesia?

Thanks for bringing the national collective iq down, Florida...

Wait a minute...are we still talking about the cobra or the human male? :D

Come on now, He's on A&E how much money can he really have? If he was wealthy he would buy a production studio and put his show on Public Access, he would get more viewers that way.

We have a shortage of coral snake antivenom here in Texas. If you get a minor bite they won't even give you anti venom. I just stay inside and avoid gardening/yard work at all costs. I'm a chicken with a snake phobia.

This guy with the king cobra is a class A jacka**, in my opinion.

How do they decide if it is minor or not?

I'm not sure- the newspaper reported there was a man bitten in north Houston by a baby coral snake on the tip of his finger, and they hospitalized him for a couple of days and treated the bite without anti venom. I read this 3 months ago, so I can't remember all of the details. I'm assuming children would get the anti venom no matter what.
