Kindle Fire vs. android tablet

I'm really leaning towards a Kindle Fire for my DD. She will use it as an e reader. But, she recently had the use an android tablet and really enjoyed the games etc.

Anyone have a Kindle Fire? Any idea how it compares for games and such? She likes the idea of being able to buy movies for a Kindle Fire but I am not tech savy, and have no idea if she will actually be able to store more than one movie on her Kindle Fire...

Just an FYI, I would love to get he an iPad but sadly, it is out of my price range this Christmas...

Note that the fire is an Android Tablet. I am not sure about the games, but movie quality is good. Plus if subscribe to Amazon Plus, you get free streaming movies. Hard to do email and such from the fire, but I have the first generation. Maybe newer generation is better.

I have 3 movies and 8 tv shows on my kindle fire and loads of space to add more on. DD and I adore our kindle fires. they are reliable and as long as you aren't typing out a war and peace post comment, you can surf just fine on them. if you get one, consider getting prime too. mine has paid for itself 4 times over and theres tons of tv and movies to watch on it. the app market has tons of options and every day they give away a paid app for free. sometimes they are really awesome ones.

I have a Kindle Fire and my husband has a Google Nexus 7. A previous poster was right - the Fire is an Android tablet. Having said that, I like my husband's Nexus better. However, if I were getting one for my kids to use primarily as an e-reader with a few games added, I would get the Fire for them. The Nexus has additional features like GPS, a Camera, a microphone, etc. None of those features are what I want my kids to use the tablet for, so I wouldn't be inclined to pay the extra money for it. FWIW, I have tons of games on my Kindle Fire that my kids love to play.

Be careful saying that the Fire is an android tablet. It's a proprietary, customized version of Android that it's running. And, more importantly, you have to use the Amazon app store, rather than the Google Play store.

That said, most of the popular apps and games are available either way.

I have a Kindle Fire. My husband has an ipad - 1st generation. My 4 year old son perfers playing with the ipad over the Fire, I am thinking because of the graphics and maybe the size.

My son asked for an ipad for Christmas. When I asked him if he would like one like mine he said no. So we got him the Samsung Galaxy Tablet 2. I haven't played with it yet, but my husband (who is an electronics geek) is VERY impressed and wants one for himself. He said the graphics are awesome. It also have Ice Cream Sandwich.

Take in mind that I primarily use my Fire to read and my son hasn't started reading full books yet.

One of the constraints of the Fire is data storage. You save downloads to the cloud (which is a fancy term for offsite storage). The problem then becomes getting access to the cloud. Essentially you will have to be some place that has internet access. If you are trying to use your Fire someplace with spotty internet access or no access at all, your Fire is worthless except for what you might have stored on your tablet's internal storage, which isnt much.

I have the galaxy tab 2 7inch - Love it I have the nook app by Barnes and noble.. I did have a nook that was good for an e-reader but was not good if you wanted to add apps they controlled there owe app store so pretty much nothing was free and they didn't have alot to pick from.. I'm not sure how the Fire is but that would be my only concern - I would check to see if you have full access to the google play store on the Fire.

Unless you're storing large amounts of media (movies and TV shows) you have plenty of storage. I have around 150 books, and 45 or so apps on my Fire. I've used up less than .3GB of my 5.37GB of internal storage available, and less than half of my application storage.

OP, for a DD who wants to mainly have an eReader with some games on it, it would work perfectly at a very reasonable price.
