Do any of you use a rotary cutter? Is it easier than scissors when doing patchwork or stripwork outfits? How do you know which one to buy? What else do I need to go with it? I went to Joanns today and saw all these mats and rulers. :sad2: How do I pick those? I am so confused. Please Help!!!!!!!! :flower3:

Thanks,
Shamiki

I think a rotary cutter is much easier than scissors. I bought a really big self healing mat and a rectangle hard plastic ruler type thing that's supposed to be for quilting, it's 6 inches wide and probably 26 or 28 inches long. When I made Mya's patchwork twirl skirt I cut strips using the plastic as the edge to follow along and then cut the strips into squares and then I used the machine to sew them into mixed fabric strips and then went on with the skirt from there.

ps- just wanted to add that when i was looking at the different sized rulers there were 2 cute old ladies and they were saying "how nice that young people are still taking up quilting" when they saw me browsing that section, lol. How cute is that??? If they only knew that the last thing I'd be making is a quilt!!

Thanks Stef,
That helps alot. I am off to Joanns again tomorrow for a rotary cutter, self healing mat, and a 6" quilting ruler.

Do any of you use a rotary cutter?
-rotary cutters are awesome, you can also use them to cut out patterns

Is it easier than scissors when doing patchwork or stripwork outfits?
-much easier

How do you know which one to buy?
-I would suggest getting the kind that locks by itself when not in use. They may look like pizza cutters but are really round razor blades, keep far from children.

What else do I need to go with it?
-unless you are going to do quilting you don't need a giant mat, just the medium size will do, and a good ruler 5 x 24 (my favorite is the one with the lip on the bottom that holds on to the edge of the mat)

good luck

wow I am gone for a few hours and there are two pages new!

I really really love that monkey outfit. its just so darling!!

OMG, I didn't know I needed special clothes for our trip,

Thank GOODNESS you found us before your trip! :rotfl: How embarassed you would have been arriving without custom outfits!

Welcome, but be careful, it's addicting!

I just pm'd you back. Someone else sent me a copy of the autograph book, I have it saved on my desktop, but don't know how to send it to someone else from there. Any simple instructions anyone has, I will try. Sorry, I'm not so swift at lots of computer things!

Easy to send files to others....right click on the file....choose "send to"...then choose "mail recipient" that should open your email program (if the file is large it can take a few seconds, so be patient) and you should see the file named just below the subject line. Now address the email and click send (change the subject line if you want, add message in body if you want).

Hope that helps....

I own a rotary cutter but must not have the right stuff to go with it...I have a huge 6.5x24 9 inch clear ruler, and a cutting mat, but it seems like I mess up more fabric with that darned rotary cutter than I would like to admit...plus those bad boys are super sharp....:scared:

Great suggestions! Thanks! They sound a little scary though. DD2 loves to hang around when I sew so I will have to hide this from her. The self locking sounds like what I need.

OK, not Disney related but here is my first attempt at the twirl skirt. I used the free instructions someone posted a while back. It's not perfect at all but my dd loves it anyways. I want to try the patchwork.

Very cute!! I'm getting ready to try my first one, but I want to do the patchwork. I think I have it worked out with the sizes of my patches. But I'm going to use lots of scrap fabric just in case I mess it up!

All the outfits are adorable. Great work everyone. OK...now that I buttered you up with compliments....:rolleyes1

I have a quick easy question for the bow-makers. I know it was discussed a few pages back (good lord knows where :goodvibes ) about sealing the edges of ribbon. Someone mentioned they use a lighter to seal the ends. Another heatsealing????? OK, I tried the lighter and I hope I did it right. Here is what I did, please tell me if there is another step to it or not.

I just sort of ran the edge of the ribbon real quick like thru the flame, just enuf to melt the edge about less then a Millimeter in (less then that actually-I just dont know what is less then a mm. ;) ) I felt it and it made a sort of very fine hard edge. Did I do it right? :confused3 I dont think it will fray unless someone actually pulls and picks at it.

I tried to use the tip of my glue gun also, but I dont think it was hot enuf so I just smeared a fine line of glue on the back side of the ribbon. The fire (oooo fire..lol) was so much easier and quicker.

OK, I knew I said it would be a quick question but the monster is still asleep and peace reigns supreme.:lmao:

Sorry, can't help you with the bows but I had to second the comment on peace! I have 3 monsters in my house today so I shall cherish every quiet moment I have. I'm off to give the tutu twirl skirt a try. I will post a photo once I'm finished. :dance3:

Hi all. I just wanted to say that I've been reading this thread for about a month. You have all inspired me!! I went out and bought a sewing machine. I started making little outfits for my daughter (3 going on 4). Then I made matching ones for my niece (18 mos). I have now made 7 sets of outfits for our upcoming trip 6/26 - 7/2. Dd birthday is 6/27, we're having dinner at the castle.

I also have made 3 outfits for my daughter to just wear. I'm now trying hair bows :)

I haven't even taken any pictures of any of them yet, but I will. I don't know at this point if it will get done before the trip, as my mom is now in the hospital, but it will get done on the trip! I will figure out how to post them somehow when we get back.

Thank you all for the wonderful posts, pictures, ideas, inspiration. You have all given me a new hobby that I find relaxing and I am really enjoying!

Carrie

I think it looks lovely, and the fact that your dd loves it is what has made it a success. I have dresses that I feel I did a nice job on, but my dds won't wear them. Then there are some that I feel the workmanship is, well, let's just say it wasn't my best effort. My girls love it and want to wear it all the time. I count the ones they wear as more successful than the ones they won't.

LadyRob, I use pretty much what they others have mentioned. It goes much faster, and cutting the fabric is one of my least favorite parts of a sewing project; so anything to make it go faster is great.

Do look for the self-locking cutter. My oldest cut her hand on mine because she started to pick it up by the circular blade. I stopped her before she grabbed it too tight, but she still managed to cut herself and had to get a "banged it." (That was what she called bandage when she was a baby, and it kind of stuck.) Because it was round, she didn't realize it was a knife. She's fine now and didn't even scar, but I know it had to hurt her at the time.

Thanks Stef,

just thought id add that i too prefer a rotary cutter. but get one that you can change the blades. i have one and i use a pinking blade- helps cut down on the fraying and much easier than pinking shears.

OOOhhh! I can't wait to see pics!

And happy birthday to your DD -- and lots of ~+~+ get well soon +~+~ vibes to your mom.

Castle Creations (Lisa)

I tried to e-mail you the Disney autograph book. Let me know if it came through okay.

If it works, I will send it onto others if they PM me their e-mail addresses. Please know that this is NOT something I created however! It came from someone else on the DIS boards. It is amazing!!!!

Stef -- After you cut your strips, sew them together lengthwise. Then cut your squares. You will already have three squares sewn together and your sewing time will be much shorter. If you already know this, please forgive me. It's one of those hints I picked up from watching the TV quilting shows.
