Oh, I was so excited, I forgot to ask. What do you serger owners do about all of the cut off thread & fabric? It's a huge mess! Any easy solutions?
To cut the threads = I keep nippers next to my machine ...
when I do patchwork tiered skirts, I just lay down (on my roller blade mat) the tiers of patched-together-squares & roller blade them off in one motion, down each side. :)
To catch the thread & scrap the machine cuts off, as it sews = my machine came with a "rectangle-shaped cup" that catches it all as it falls down ... it's attached to a "plate" that slides up under the front edge of the machine.
AND ... a long time ago, I saw a larger one that you can buy = it's a plastic plate with a mesh NET on one corner/edge = it does the same thing ... I'll see if I can find a picture of it, later ...

Thank you all for your suggestions for treating my daughter! I appreciate it! :thanks:

Well I finally finished one of the outfits for our trip last night. This is my grand nephew who will be going on the trip and I told him to look fierce!

th_IMG_0091.jpg

This looks great!!! He is such a handsome little guy, too!
BTW, you can say DD12's kindness has nothing to do with you, but I'm sure you had something to do with it!! You are not a bad mom, either (because if you are, then I am). I'm sure you do the best you can when you're not feeling well.

Yes we ate by the fish and the divers come through periodically which is cool anyway to watch. During dinner the diver came by and held up this sign for her. It was a really cool surprise. I called and got connected to Coral Reef directly and set it up with the manager there.

How cool!!!

oh here is the newest pirate mickey! anastasia loved taking some pics for me!

Lori

Did I ever show you all my Back to school Preppy Minnie set. Josephine loved this set!
IMG_2685.jpg

Lori, I love both of these! Wonderful work!

I was able to get just enough juice in my camera battery to snap a few pics and upload. Here is the Halloween set. Simple, but very cute on!

And this is a close up of what I call the semi-appliqued tee. I heat-n-bonded the candy corn, and instead of stitching around the edges, I placed rhinestuds to trim. I like the way it looks, and if it doesn't hold up, then oh well. It's probably only gonna be worn once anyway.

IMG_2779.jpg

Great idea using the rhinestuds! I love this outfit!

hello everyone,

You do beautiful work! I think Ariel looks great outlined in black, she pops that way.

Confession: The number of to do projects and the amount of fabric I have far exceeds my skill level and my free time.

Ok, now that I have that off my chest....
I have been hoping this dress would go on sale and instead it sold out :scared1:
instylekids_1962_616175553

Oops, I guess I played that wrong.
So now I have to add it to my Things I Want to Learn to Make list.

Hopefully by next summer I will be up for it. Although I doubt in my version the bottom ladybug will hang down below the hem like this one.

I've saved this photo because I'm with you, I'd love to CASE it. I have a thing for dressing my little one in ladybugs, not sure why?

We were at Costco this morning and they had a Brother 7700 sewing machine for what seemed like a good price. But when I went onto Brothers website to check it out...its not there. Hmmm? Any thoughts? I did a search and it only seems to be at Costco.
Anyone ever heard of this one Model XR7700?

Here's a "semi-custom" that I put together today. The greatest thing is that it cost a whopping $5.00! I went to K-Mart (or is that koldemart?)(I can't believe I just typed that!) to search for the sequince appliques. No luck there, but I saw this really cute dress on clearance for $5.00. I purchased it in a size 24 months, cut off the bottom ruffle layer, made a pair of capris out of white fabric from my stash, and added the cut off ruffle layer. Waa-laa!
th_IMG_2781.jpg

How cute is that!! What a clever idea! I'm gonna be on the lookout for tops to do that with now!

Eeyore's Tiara thank you so much for sharing that story with us, I love reading things like that. She sounds like a wonderful girl.

Ok, I got my pictures. Here is what I made last night. All opinions are welcome.

100_1667.jpg

Should I do the face and hair in matching thread instead of black? Should I make capris to go with it or skorts? What color? Should I alter the jeans as orginally planned? Why is it so bloody hot here? HELP!

Here is the baby going off to school this morning. She had a great day, but I was a wreck!

Oh, I was so excited, I forgot to ask. What do you serger owners do about all of the cut off thread & fabric? It's a huge mess! Any easy solutions?

Hmm, my serger came with a "thing" that slips under the serger in the front and catches most of the thread and fabric trimmed by the serger. I try to keep it cleaned out because once it gets more than about 1/2 full it too easily starts falling outside of the "thing".

To be honest, I have a bad habit of just tossing trimmings to the floor around my sewing area. It's vinyl flooring so I just sweep it aside every so often. I tried keeping a small trash can nearby but I still ended up with things on the floor so I just let them fall. The only problem is if I don't sweep things before DD walks through with socks and then tracks the thread, fabric scraps, etc. to other areas of the house. LOL

With all the tallk abou cricut, does anyone know if the wishblade would work? My DS has one and from my understanding, you don't need cartridges. It hooks up to the computer and you can download files, fonts. It's more expensive than the cricut, but you don't ever have to buy anything else to go with it!

Yes, it works. I have a wishblade, but I'm ashamed to say I've used it only once. I keep thinking that I need to start working with it to do applique, but I'm not even close to ready to think about the "A" word.

Ok, got the Brother 1034D today. Spent a few hours reading, watching the DVD, threading and testing it. Works great - don't know how I lived without it for all these years......

The machine came with a gathering foot - one that you slip the fabric through the top and the bottom so one fabric gathers on the other as you sew....I set the machine to the suggested numbers, but it really doesn't gather like I thought it would - maybe I am thinking of ruffles, and not gathers. The pattern I got for the Layered Tulle Twirl Skirt has the ruffles at 2:1 gathers...but there is no way the serger does that.

Am I doing something wrong, or am I expecting too much? I can go and gather it on my regular machine and then serge it, but if I can get the serger to do this, it would be easier.....

TIA
Just love this thread...you are all so wonderful and so complementary - OT my DD (37) called today crying uncontrollably because of a rude remark a coworker made about adoptive parents....something along the lines that they don't count, or don't matter....it had to do with a discussion of something in the media between a parent and child (perhaps a star?),,,but she was so upset she couldn't make a lot of sense at the time. She and her DH cannot conceive..and never will...and they adopted a baby boy from Russia who is now 3. God definitely chose Nicholas for them and for our family and he is so loved... I just don't understand what motivates some people. Would love to make those adorable overalls with the safari Mickey for Nicholas. He loves AK!
Susan:love:

She is an impressive young girl. What a big heart she has. Thank you for sharing this with us.
And I think all kids have there "drama queen" moments...some last longer than other ;)

WOW! What an amazing young lady! That just made me cry! You have every right to be very, very proud of her!

what a great kid u have, u go girl!!! Im crying and Im at WORK>! GREAT:rolleyes1

Oh my-this made me cry! What a wonderful sweet DD you have!
Good job!:grouphug:

I'm sorry I made you cry, especially at work, I thought I was the only one who cried at what she does. Thank you, I admit she is special and I don't know what I did to deserve her. I guess you never know how truly wonderful your kids are until they are put to the test. If I can keep encouraging her thoughtful side, she will be a very special woman.

This looks great!!! He is such a handsome little guy, too!

I know that, but it's hard to live that. It is so hard to watch her be the little mommy to my 4 yo. I appreciate it so much but it hurts because I want her to be a little girl too. That makes me feel like a bad mom. Thank you for the pep talk Heather, I needed that. I will adjust to what I cant control. Well I'll try.

My first attempt at the peasant top...

and can you believe these are the best pics I could get...that silly wiggle worm wouldn't stop. And pardon the messy face I interrupted snack time.

th_peasanttop1.jpg

Next one I want to make a little bigger. Give her room to grow.
I think it turned out ok. I have discovered my biggest problem when sewing....lead foot. Ugh, I don't usually speed, but when I am sewing, I seriously need to slow down. Its not like it saves time, cause I spend twice as long with the seam ripper :)

Any one ever make these long and call it a dress?

I love it! That is beautiful fabric! Your daughter is SOOOO cute!!!!! My daughters have some dresses that look like long peasant blouses, so I'm sure that would look very cute.

You know, every time I see your signature picture, I want to tell you, "GET YOUR HEAD IN THE WINDOW!!!" There, I feel better now! You scare me leaning out like that!!!

Thank you all for your suggestions for treating my daughter! I appreciate it! :thanks:

Yes, there is a string on the collar and I did trim it after I took this picture! :rotfl:

If you thought my dd was special before, you won't believe what she did for my niece and grand nephew this summer.

I am NOT letting my girls see these pictures! First you nephew is just BEYOND cute!!! Arminda would be all gaga over him, and Lydia would see the Cheetah print you have in the background!!!

Great job on the outfit!

Let me preface this with, my child is not perfect, she is prone to teenage angst and drama and has earned he title of "Drama Queen" in our family. But she has her good moments! This explanation will be fairly long...
.

WHY do you keep making me cry?????? I just want to give your daughter a GREAT BIG HUG!!!   Please, pass that on to her!!!! How absolutely wonderful.

I really like the appliques outlined in black thrread. Not sure about the other stuff though!

And, yet again, this board has me crying, seeing your little cutie going off to school!!! With a backpack almost as big as her! She looks so precious!

And, WOO HOOO Heather, if you are around, I found the camera!!!! Prepare to be SHOCKED :scared1: and AMAZED!!!!!!!

I am SOO excited to share my completed customs with you guys!!

You *should* be excited, those are gorgeous! Absolutely great job!

Here is what I did yesterday. It is my trial run for my planned Belle outfit -(I spent $60 on the fabric for the Belle outfit so I NEEDED to do a test run on something else... anyway I learned to do BUTTONHOLES yesterday -- yeah Here it is -- retrorocket:
RetroRocketstripedjumper002.jpg

Loooove what you did with the retro fabric. I saw it in the store and didn't like it, but now that I've seen it in use, it's fantastic! Can't wait to see your Belle outfit!

Well here is the custom that arrived yesterday. It's not Disney...I guess DD could wear it to Animal Kingdom. It's a 4 piece set, It's for DD's birthdy next week, so no model until then! I love this set, I'm thrilled that I won it!!

DD loves the giraffes at the zoo! Our zoo (Detroit Zoo) just got a new giraffe exhibit. There's a new platform where you can actually feed the giraffes!! We can't wait to go and feed them!!

Oh man, I cannot express how much I love this set.

I Made DD Appliqued MMhead shirt last night. I am happy with it. Don't look too close ;)
.

Good job on all the appliqued shirts!

Susan:love:

So sorry your DD had to experience such insensitivity. People can really be ignorant. As an adoptive parent myself, I understand how difficult it is to deal with people about their stupidity sometimes. The fact that people don't realize that adoptive parents are the only parents that have to PROVE that they are suitable parents is really ridiculous to me. And yet... So sorry!

OK, here we go!!!!! Can you hardly stand the excitement!!! This picture was 14 years in the making!!!!!

The pants is the outfit Heather made Corey when he was about 1. It was a little big then, but look at it now!!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: (3 minimum) Corey is doing his Mervyn's mannequin pose for you all! Actually, he said, "Do NOT put those pictures on the internet Mom!" Yeah, right, like I wouldn't take this opporutunity to embarass him!

Thank you!
I love it! I like the colors you used and the little girl. It is cute trimmed in the black, so I don't know that I'd change it, someone else might have a better idea! I love the capris idea, skorts might be too bulky with the ruffled top.
I'm sorry it's so hot, just keep inside as much as possible and keep thinking cool thoughts and drink a lot of Iced tea!

I hope your day wasnt too bad! Did she have a good day?

Aw.... to your DD. I never understand why people always feel the need to act like adopted parents aren't the same, or in the same caliber as birth parents. I just had it when people feel the need to point out that a child is adopted. It especially seems to happen in the media- for instance when they're talking about a celebrity, they have to specify their "adopted" child. GRRR!!! My DH and I had a hard time conceiving and we considered adopting from Russia or the Ukraine. So, it's cool to hear about your grandson!

I like the applique outlined in black. You got me crying seeing your little cutie going of to her first day of school. It just hits too close to home. I'm going to fall apart when Tessa starts school next year.

I like the shirt just the way it is. I vote for capris, just because I love them.
I know how you feel about your baby going to school. I had to do that last year and cried all the way home. It is hard to let them go!

Anyone ever heard of this one Model XR7700?

196977.jpg

It's exclusive to Costco! It's even better than the 6000 because there's more stitches, i noticed, And it has a little picture frame on the outside...open the picture frame to a stitch menu. Basically it's the same, but costs $144.00!

I wish I had seen it before I spent $186. (?) on my 6000 at Walmart. Ya think they'd return it? :cool2:

SAME super easy bobbin too. :upsidedow

Thank you! I had seen pirates with striped pants before, so I thought why not? I bet Tammy will look great! Especially with a red/white sash to go on it! And, ummm arent' most pirates close to being convicts anyway.....:rotfl2:

Let me preface this with, my child is not perfect, she is prone to teenage angst and drama and has earned he title of "Drama Queen" in our family. But she has her good moments! This explanation will be fairly long...

MY niece is a single mom with a 6 yo son. She doesn't have much money and isn't able to do things for her son. My dd was telling her cousin, my grand nephew, about getting to go to WDW and he sat there and listened and asked so many questions about it that when she came back to talk to me she said, "how come they never go" I had to explain to her that they didnt have the money. She asked me why not? I had to explain that being a single mom was hard work and you didnt always have alot of money and how lucky she was to be able to go to WDW as much as we did.

She then asked me if she paid for it, would they be able to go with us? I told her that was a big responsibility to make that much money and that if she thought she was up to it, and if they wanted to go, I would agree to it. But I wouldn't be able to help her much with paying because of so many medical bills. She said okay, she understood. She asked my other niece if she wanted to go also and when she said she did but couldnt afford much, she said if you will pay for your ticket and part of the room you can stay with christi, (the single mom). And then she worked ALL summer to make the rest of the needed amount of money to pay for their tickets and room. She worked hard. So my nieces and grand nephew have her to thank for their trip to WDW. I am trying to make clothing for them to wear so that they don't have added the expense of clothing for the trip.

If she knew I was telling on her she would be so embarassed.

What a very special person both you and your daughter are. You must have taught her so well to be so knid to others well done to both of you

teresajoy thankyou for your kind words re my DS he is slowly getting there it all just takes time
