What a fantastic daughter you have! Your little story made me cry. How unselfish of her. It is a wonderful reflection on you--what a selfless, giving mother you must be
I think the idea you have for a pedicure is a great one, or how about the BBB?
Or, just spend some alone time with her at WDW...go get a pedicure ttogether. Maybe Set out a special card or note for her to find while there and tell her how wonderful she is. Then, take a walk and just "end up" at the Spa to get the pedi together???....Hmm....I will see if I can think of something else.

ETA- I just read someone else's idea (I hadn't caught up yet....) Seems we were both thinking similar things. How about give her a card, with some special polish (like other poster suggested). Tell her that you two can go take a walk together, just the 2 of you and find the most special place to give each other a pedicure with the polish. So, she thinks she's going on a hunt with you for the perfect place. Then, you "just happen" to end up at the Spa.

Your ideas are really good and helpful to me right now. I cant seem to get my brain in gear. I love the suggestion of surprise spa treatment! That would be fun if I can keep a secret.

I think this is a great idea! The pedicure that I got at Saratoga Springs was the best pedicure I've ever gotten. Will you get one with her?

Here are the projects I got started AND finished yesterday. I am mildly pleased. The knee socks are my favorite. I used the scrapbooking Mickey button heads. Removed the sticky stuff, and hand sewed them to knee socks. I don't care for My Little Pony in general, but daughter does. It was my first time using Heat n Bond, and cutting out the letter. Pretty simple. About midway through sewing, I realized how stinking big the dress is. Not sure what measurements I was using?? Anyway she loves it. It will fit her perfectly when she is probably ten. And I wish I was being funny when I said that! I didn't even try it on her it's that big. DH said she can wear it as a nightgown. The last picture is my version of the Waldamort dress. It's pretty cute. All I did was add rickrack and an old Mickey head someone sold me. I think it was cut out from a sweatshirt. It's the first time I used E6000. I do think you can glue the kitchen table down with this stuff! Although I used a lot. Do most of you just dab around the corners when you use this? I spread it over the entire back of the applique. I do think the fumes were affecting me. Maybe this is why the Pony outfit is so huge?? So all in all, not a bad day. I sewed , I put buttons on, I ironed, I used Heat N Bond for first time, and used E 6000 for first time. I also cut out material to sew a jumper dress, but then DH and keds and their friends all came home. And of course they were hungry so....I was done.

I love these button socks. I may have to case them.

I'm sure she does it out of love. You must be a terrific Mommy. Definately write it down, something about a handwritten note is just so special and then do pedicure together. Depending on how much she's helped you may want to be more elaborate. As a caregiver for a family member myself I know how much effort goes into it and lucky for her you seem to genuinely appreciate it.

She has been really helpful this year. I feel like the worst mommy of the year because she has had to take on extra responsibility with helping me and helping with her little sister. I do know how much she helps and it breaks my heart.

I think the pedicure is a great idea! My daughter is 13 and loves them. Give your sweet girl a hug from me. You are so blessed to have such a considerate daughter.

Well, girls, I'm almost done with some outfits for my son and I need some suggestions. Listed below are three overall sets.....Safari, Sorcerer, and Stitch. The Safari and Stitch look a little plain, so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what I can add to spruce them up. I think the sorcerer looks fine by itself because there's a broom added on the back, although I have to add on the handles yet. I was thinking of doing a beach scene with a surf board on one leg for the stitch overalls and maybe do a lion on the back for the safari. These will be cut at a bermuda short length. Any ideas?
I also threw in pics of his necklaces.

i was just going to say how cute these were! Little boys don't have much in custom, so I love seeing these cute overalls!

I have similar memories of gifts - to this day the most cherished gift from my maternal grandmother (the only one that I still have to this day) was a hand crocheted afghan that she made for me for Christmas when I was in 6th grade. I still have that afghan. It is such a treasure to me to know that she made it for me!

Anyone can buy a gift, but to take the time to make something special from the heart...is the most wonderful gift of all!!!

Here's a "semi-custom" that I put together today. The greatest thing is that it cost a whopping $5.00! I went to K-Mart (or is that koldemart?)(I can't believe I just typed that!) to search for the sequince appliques. No luck there, but I saw this really cute dress on clearance for $5.00. I purchased it in a size 24 months, cut off the bottom ruffle layer, made a pair of capris out of white fabric from my stash, and added the cut off ruffle layer. Waa-laa!

I have looked at sergers, but they are so overwhelming looking. I see on these patterns from YCMT that most of the designers use sergers. Does anyone have any experience they could share with me? Brands, types, how long did it take you to learn to use it, is it worth the money, or do you hate it? I bought my machine 25 years ago for $1000 and it has been my only machine all these years. It is a great computerized machine and I love it, never jams, always does what it should do. But I see these serger folks can even gather on their machines.

Any help greatly appreciated. Going to make 4 outfits for my DGD who is a very tiny 2 1/2 year old. She loves to twirl. Also have to make princess costumes since the ones I bought at WDW are too big - even the XXS. But it will be a joy to do it.

This is what I did ...
I found a $80 marked-down display model, from wallymart about 4-5(?) years ago; it was around $299 retail to start with (& up to $399 at some stores, still today) ...
When I bought it, I asked for the box & noted that all the attachments & Info sheets were still inside it.
They had it hid under their fabric table for quite awhile, so it had been marked done in the computer SEVERAL TIMES, it was marked $180, but a quick scan showed it would ring up at $80.
Being a display model, of course people & children had spun all the tension dials & fiddled with all the parts ... so, when I got it home, I spent about 2 hours reading the manual & resetting the tensions (don't let that scare you. It takes me 1-2 minutes NOW, that I know how it's done right.) ... And It's been just wonderful ever since! ...
I clean it out with an air compressor after every other outfit and I've oiled it once or twice. ... I pre-cut most of my fabric (*roller-blade addict*), hence I don't use the serger's blades very often = so, they are still sharp, after all this time. ... I change the needles every once in awhile, since I work with alot of denim ...
+ I put that rubbery-shelf liner stuff under it, so that it does not run around the table when I'm using at full trottle.
I love it ... it's a Brother 1034D

Alot of the Wallymarts are remodeling = I'd check around the fabric tables, to see if there's a serger they aren't displaying anymore, ask if it's marked down and if they still have it's box & contents ... And IF you aren't up to fiddling with it to get it up-to-par again, perhaps check local sewing machine shops, to see what they charge for tune-ups ... You could save a couple hundred dollars, if you time it right. ... AND remember, keep your receipt & box, since Wallymart has a 90 days return policy, just in case.

You could use pricegrabber.com ... IF you're looking online.
I've had great machine luck & customer service with sewvacdirect.com, with 3 machines & tons of other things
I saw a NEW ONE at buy.com

I walked by another, newer model at one of my wallymarts lately (now-ex-display-model), but didn't see a price tag = if you want me to, I can ask them about it for you ...

Oh my gosh, I am just crying after reading this! What a WONDERFUL daughter you have!!! You must be one wonderful Mom to be raising such a thoughtful daughter!

She is a wonderful daughter. I have a very special child and it's not my doing. I think she was a gift from God to help me get through it all. My kids are my reason for going on. She makes me cry too!

She sounds like a sweetheart. I love the pedicure idea. You could make it a big girls afternoon and have your nails done then High Tea at GF.

I have been the absolute worst mother through this last year, so she's just special without anything from me. She's always been really thoughtful and sensitive to others. She is a gift from God. I cant say that enough.

I agree with you about people either liking homemade or disliking it. When I was younger I hated my mom making me anything, but now I appreciate it so much more. And my mom's crocheted baby blankets are coveted in our church whenever someone has a baby. They are so pretty and great keepsakes. I proudly used the ones she made me for my babies and other people would stop me and ask where I got them. But it took my maturing to understand the value of something handmade. (See now that I'm older, I like to refer to it as handmade versus homemade because people have made the word homemade a negative thing.)

OK, someone posted about weather and whether (I hope I got those two right) or not to make long sleeves and as a native I would say I personally would opt for something layerable. I can't find the post and can't remember when you said your trip was you can just never tell. Today it is 105 degrees in Tampa Bay w/ the heat index. (similar to the northern wind chill factor I would suppose)
We are going the last week of OCT and have for the last 3 years (this'll be our 4th MNSSHP) and the first year it was great, we could swim during the day and it was cool at night. year 2 we FROZE, couldn't even get pics of my darling pixie (3mo's old) in her tinkerbell costume (custom made, you know) and last year we were ready to rip our costumes off- the lot of us pirates w/ way too many layers on, even DS the Jedi was ready to strip down to his undershirt!!
So ya never can tell 'round these parts.

I think it turned out ok. I have discovered my biggest problem when sewing....lead foot. Ugh, I don't usually speed, but when I am sewing, I seriously need to slow down. Its not like it saves time, cause I spend twice as long with the seam ripper

Any one ever make these long and call it a dress?

Since I am re-doing all my DDs tops, I am wondering if I should make some of them long sleeves.

In other news: I am more than half way through my first peasant blouse for her. I will post when I get it done.

I would vote for short sleeves. Most people are surprised at how warm it is in Flordia even in the winter. My dd and I went last year from the 17th to 21st of Dec and it was hot! 78 degrees during the day. A little chilly at night. Here is a photo from last year, how the outfit started and then she got hot and we had to take the long sleeved shirt off.

I would vote layers as well for December. We went for Christmas 2004 and it was 37 degrees when we woke up on Christmas morning. In all of our pics our DS is wearing his winter coat, a hood, a hat and mittens we bought from a Walgreens!

COme to think of it last year when it was mondo hot...we went to disney just DH and I for his birthday about 4 weeks later and had just summer clothes and the 2nd evening there was a sudden drop in temperature and the stores were FLOODED w/ ppl buying sweatshirts, gloves, hats etc. as soon as the sun went down, including us. WDW's sweats are a little pricey but they had black beanies and one size fits all type gloves pretty reasonable. I just remembered that, we always feel like idiots when we are not prepared cause DUH, we live here.

That's it for today, off to Joanns to get that POTC fabric I found and head home to make the quickest dinner possible so I can get to cutting her pirate twirl top!!!! (with my new rotary cutter!!)

Thank you! They are pockets, I didn't make them quite like I envisioned so I realize they kind of look like patches. Oh well, chalk it up to a learning experience

would you mind sharing why you had to take out 3 rows...I know it sounds bad but I seem to learn froms others mistakes....

LOL Two reasons, actually. The first is I forgot to sew on the RIGHT side of the fabric, which means the elastic thread showed on the front of the top. Second, when I wound the elastic on the bobbin, I did it too tight and didn't bunched the fabric up when I sewed. I rewound it without any tightness at all and it sewed beautifully. But next time I will be absolutely sure everything is correct first because it is really a pain to use a seam ripper on elastic thread!

Yes, there is a string on the collar and I did trim it after I took this picture!

If you thought my dd was special before, you won't believe what she did for my niece and grand nephew this summer.
