Can someone help? I'm going to the fabric store today to buy stabilizer and thread. What kind of thread am I looking for? I know I am not supposed to get all purpose, right?

I have absolutely loved browsing this thread in the past couple of months. I grew up in a family where all the women could sew. My mother made so many clothes for me growing up from baby dresses to prom dresses. She made a french hand sewn graduation gown for me and then remade it into a christening gown for my children 15 years later. I never needed to learn to sew and only picked up a few skills from her.:sad1: A couple of years ago she gave me the Singer sewing machine she received as a college grad gift. It's a lovely shade of green that would fit well in the 60's scene on COP. Thanks to this board and all the tips and advice I felt ready to take on a small project. Here is my result. I think the smile on my daughter's face says it all. I will be emailing these pictures to my mom too. She will be so proud. My first satin stich ever! A tinkerbell costume is next!

Good job!! your children are totally cute... I love you little girls smile..

I love those outfits! Your daughter is beautiful. Where did you get the shirt with the Minnie head on it? And what did you use to outline the Minnie head?

Thank you so much!!! I bought the outfit off eBay - I could go into more detail in a PM :). Around Minnies head is small black rick rack.

okay, I am clueless, what on earth is rik rack? the dress I am trying to make also said to use this. TIA
Lori

lori - I hope you're caught up! or that you'll at least see this. I love your outfits. did you make them?

aimee - everytime someone reposts your nemo dress, I fall more in love with it! It is so sweet!

LOL - I am only up to page 101 - but still checking the new ones as I go. I layed in bed last night - ideas SWIRLING in my mind - I think I'm going crazy - LOL! I didn't make any of the outfits I posted - but am going to start trying! I can sew a little - I've made our family matching pajamas, halloween costumes and a flecce vest (with pockets and a zipper - LOL!). I looked through my patterns late last night - and am heading to JoAnn today.

It's the trim that looks like zig zag/wavy lines under the duck in this very cute set shared many pages back. It's also used as a trim around the top of the bodice and straps as well as on the underskirt. (Great job to the maker of this set, BTW!!!)

This is the top:

You can use embroidery thread for applique. It comes on larger spools. Coats & Clark makes some. JoAnn's also carries Sulky and Gutterman brands. Just don't use this for regular sewing! It won't hold up when it's stitched in just one little line (as you would sewing).

If you're putting the applique on a knit shirt, you may want to get some ball point needles. They're slightly dull. I forgot to change needles on one thin shirt and basically it perforated around the design, which ripped right off. My kids heard some words that day! ::eek: I'm sure I've forgotten a couple of other times too, and things have been fine, but just in case...

Hey, that's my Minnie hat! :lmao: I love all your outfits. How did you do the one with the overalls...is the minnie print attached only at the front? Very cool! QUOTE]

Have fun at your class!! Learn lots and bring us back some pointers! I didn't make the overalls - but yes the "skirting" is only attached to the front under the fabric that covers the bib.

Do you let your kids where their custome clothes to school, parties, etc after your trips?

YES!!!! It seems like such a waste to only wear in Disney! DD got the minnie twirl set - and when I had her try it on - she wouldn't take it off! LOL!

O.k. girls. I am on my way to my little fabric store we have in town. I need to get a couple of colors to finish Drew's "Rock-n-roll" outfit!

I just saw that my little fabric store has a website!

www.needlenest.com

The ladies that opened it are terrific and very helpful!

But I'm trying to keep up! And I have a couple of questions!

1) Are you a total perfectionist when it comes to sewing for someone else? I sold my first disney customs on that auction site a few days ago and have been working on those. When I'm sewing for my kids, if I don't have something exact, but it looks good (i.e. no one but me would notice) I just leave it as is. Now that I'm sewing for others, it must be as perfect as I can get it! Can anyone relate?

2) There have been posts about how many Amy's and Lisa's there are, but now I'm noticing a few Lori's. How many of us are there?

I guess I should add a signature or something so people actually know my name, LOL!

I really stressed when I first started sewing more for others. Like you, when it's just for DD or me, I don't mind if the serger thread doesn't match, my topstitching isn't ruler straight, etc. I'm much more concerned about the work I do for others, though, and want things to be as perfect and polished as I can. However, I also remind myself that I am not a machine so any slight deviations from perfection are OK because I'm human... and probably wouldn't ever be noticed except by me.

DD decided to be a pirate for halloween today. (YEA!! Tutu twirl & corset!!!) I said little brother could be a pirate too. She said "NAH, he's going to be my parrot!" I thought that was a great idea! So DS (he'll be almost 2) is going to be a parrot - with feathers and all!!

That would be so adorable!! How creative she is! PLEASE be sure to post pics when you're done with the costumes.... I really wanna see that parrot!

I have never listed a custom auction on ebay simply because I feel it would never be good enough and I would stress too much. I will however sell my son's which I do try to make perfect. I will make something and then list it also, only done 1 time though. I like to be able to show the finished product so there no surprises. My friend has gotten quite a few surprises on custom outfits where they look nothing like the auction when done (and take far too long).

I was impressed!! I don't think I would have thought of that myself.

DH looked at the credit card bill online. :scared: Let's just say, it is either the credit card/ebay or my marriage. He was not happy with the charges from paypal. I had to cut up my credit card and take it off of paypal. Guess I have to purchase items from ebay on paydays and use my debit card. UGH! He is the party pooper. Doesn't he know my money if for other stuff, and the credit card is for ebay? lol. Anyway, I have to stop my purchasing for a few weeks. :sad1:

Yep, my DH just nixed my paypal spending too!!! I'll lie low for a week or so. No more buying for me!! (For now hehe)

A while ago someone was asking about a Tiger Lily costume. Here is my daughter in the one I made. She may it a point to correct anyone that called her Pocahontas, such good manners I'm teaching.:dance3:

I was thinking about doing my baby as Tiger Lily for the P&PP party. Your daughter looks adorable!
