You know that expression "two wrongs don't make a right"? Well, I just learned that it doesn't apply to cutting material, either!!! :rotfl:

I used the pattern on the wrong fold of the cloth so it was basically backwards. I figured if I did the other side of the dress wrong also, maybe they would both be right! Wrong!! Now I have a neck hole where there should be arm cutouts! Oh well! I went ahead and cut out armholes, too. It is a summer dress with ties at the shoulders. I figure for the $1.00 per yd. fabric I got from Walmart last year, it's a great experience!!

Okay...just finished cutting, now it's time to SEW!!

Here are some jeans I have been working on. I really like the way they turned out. I think the part I love most is the belt and the ruffles! Two things I can't do for my son!

And here is the back

Hopefully in a week or two we'll have a model for them!

ok the rotary tool and map are not my friends.... please tell me practice makes perfect.

I am trying to cut out 50+ 6 inch squares for a jojo twirl skirt.

Ok, I feel stupid... what is a jon jon?

Its a one piece sleeveless jumper for little boys...someone on here posted a backyardigans one that they had made. If I had a picture I would post it...but I am not done with mine yet.
HTH

That *so* sounds like something I would do! I think your logic was sound about cutting all the pieces out backwards. Who knew!?

Glad you finally got it to work.

Does anybody know how to use cording? I really like the detailed lines that cording gives an outfit. If a pattern calls for a bias tape neckline and arms, would I use cording in place of bias tape or in addition to bias tape? Also what's the best way to sew cording into an outfit? I love the look, but I'm stumped!

I'm done with my dress!!! Not that it will ever actually be worn anyone!!! :lmao:

It was good practice.

I have another question, and I'm really sorry! I feel like I am turning this board into a "how to sew" thread. Is there somewhere else I can/should post my question??

Thanks,
Lisa

Post it here! Everyone is learning and I have learned new stuff too about sewing when someone else has asked! I know sometimes the thread moves fast so just ask again if you get "ignored", I guess overlooked is a better word for it.

Ah! Thanks Jessica !! :grouphug:

Okay, well, I made this very *simple* sundress. It is 2 pcs. of fab, a front and a back. As I posted a few posts ago, instead of my pattern having the armholes facing out of the fabric fold, I had them facing in and ended up with a neck hole instead of arms! I just went ahead and cut out arms and that was fine. It's all practice.

A big thing is that I had to actually use 2 pcs. of fabric because neither were big enough for half of a dress.

After I cut out the pattern and when I pinned the two pieces together, I realized that 1 of the pieces of fabric was insideout!!

Is there a trick about making sure the fabric is inside out when cutting or visa versa? The other option is I had the fabric inadvertantly inside out when I pinned one side of the pattern on!?

I'm not sure what I did wrong? Insight anyone?!?

TIA!
Lisa

2 more items my daughter will never wear. :headache: Oh well, at least I enjoy making them! Both are M2MG Island Getaway, necklace and pony o's

Keep it up and ignore them! There is nothing they can do unless you copied it exactly and it is copyrighted. It like the designer knockoffs after the oscars & such...

In the fashion world, this doesn't mean anything. I worked in NYC for several years in the garment district. Until about 3 years ago and I burnt out. Anyway, they all copy off of each other. If you ever watch those emmy shows, the cheap companies all come out with copies of the dresses you just saw on the runway at the award shows. It's pretty common practice.

In the words of the kids at church..."You rock my socks off!!" :rockband:

Your craftiness is incredible! Now that I am finished with Grad school, and my DDs 2 and 6 have seen the pictures posted, it is time to dust off the old sewing machine!! :flower1:

Castle Creations--HOLD YOUR GROUND!! There is a commercial pattern available for this **exact** jumper (Farbenmix Marieke)--Who's to say she (or you) didn't use it to create your original designs? How can she claim a copyright to a pattern company's design, claim it as her own, and say that anyone else can't use it to create and sell something? This is completley snobbish and ridiculous! The fabrics you used are the same commercial fabrics available that everyone uses for their Disney outfits. Plus you did a lot to change it up and make it your own by adding pants, ruffles, buttons etc. I'd suggest you forget the sharks in this case and not-so-politely tell them to get off your back! Don't let them bully you again!

I think you make a great point. There are groups that seem to bully other sellers.

CC, if they bullied you or interferred with the auction, please consider reporting them.

Hi, Lisa

I am not sure what you did because I am the kind of person who understands things better if I can see it.

I can tell you this, Inside the pattern the directions have a layout guide for the fabric and how to cut things out.

As you cut it out you have to make sure that you read what is written on the pattern, also you should place all the pieces on the fabric with the arrow on the pattern going the same direction. THis way nothing comes out upside down.

For example one time I was cutting out snowman fabric to make a pajama shirt. When I cut out the sleeves the fabric was folded so I could cut two out at once. But one of the sleeves the snow men were upside down!

I like making pajamas as practice because if you make a mistake you can still wear them around the house. There are lots of cute Disney flannels out there.

Also, the pattern envelope has a guide on the back to tell you how much fabric you need to make the garment. I usually get a little extra to play with. For example it may say you need 2 yards to make a dress for size 8 and I would ask for 2 1/4 yards when I get the fabric cut.

It all takes practice though and everyone is bound to make some mistakes even some experienced sewers.

I hope that helps. For practice you could get some broadcloth, it is usually only 1.99 a yard and comes in lots of colors!

Alright, I wanted to share with all of you what I spent my afternoon doing. It isn't Disney, but I thought some of you may like it. Of course, some of you may hate it, too. :lmao: This is my latest from my Budget Boutique. I found the Ralph Lauren Polo shirt in my local thrift shop for $.25. I added the stripe and made the shorts. I couldn't find a pattern like I wanted -- with the stripe and piping on the side, so I had to improvise. I'm really quite pleased with the results. I almost took a picture of the inside because I'm particularly proud of that. All the seems are serged and top stitched down or somehow enclosed in the shorts.

Wanna know what's really sad -- in a funny sort of way? I don't even have a boy or a nephew. :lmao: That's when you know this obsession has gone too far.
Don't know why the first pic is so blurry. Sorry.

Now, I'm going to clean off my sewing table and try to get back to see what I've missed.
