Does anyone have any suggestions re: a kids camera for vacation photos? I don't want to have my kids holding my expensive iphone....but I do want photos from their point of view. Would greatly appreciate some advice! Thank you!

A few yrs. back when DS got into taking photos, but was around 10, Fugi had a great camera that was waterproof, dirtproof, and able to withstand drops. You can also take underwater pics with it as well. I don't remember the model number, and of course they may not make that one anymore, but maybe have something similar.

Awesome! I'll look it up....this is a good start.

I would give them an old phone I am no longer using. That's what I have done.

That's a great idea, I'd love to see the trip through their eyes. Mine are 4 and 5 and while they have my old iPhones as theirs now, and take pretty awesome pictures lol, I'd be hesitant to let them take the phones around the park. They'd go missing on day 1. A cheap disposable may be the way to go.

Oh yes! Didnt think about disposable cameras!

The only downside to disposable is I don't know if my kids will get the concept of having only a couple dozen shots to take. I may hit some garage/rummage sales and try to scoop up a couple old digital cameras.

My kids love to take cameras with them on vacation, but not usually in Disney..We find it's just one more thing to have to carry around and worry about them dropping or forgetting somewhere.
We also have a cheap little Fuji that they use for vacation purposes.

double check and make sure places around you still develop disposable cameras. We were cleaning our my parents condo last year and found lots of old disposable cameras and many places said they no longer developed them.

Why would a camera shop no longer develop film?

Very few places still carry the supplies and equipment for developing film. I suppose it's an issue of supply/demand vs space. They can stock a lot more other items if they don't need to make room for the developing equipment that is rarely used. Most real "camera shops" will now send out for developing rather than do it in-house, and drug stores might not even offer developing service at all.

OP - we found a good deal on a cheap digital camera for DD when she was ready to take her own pictures. I think it was marked down to something like $15. It was fine for her needs (which generally consisted of cutting off people's heads, pictures of the floor/ceiling, her stuffed animals, etc.) but over the years it doesn't take good pictures now. But it was worth it at the time; we considered a disposable but easily would have spent the same amount on a camera or 2 and developing. As someone else pointed out, kids today are used to taking lots of pictures without regard to "how many are left on the roll" to limit themselves with film cameras.

Enjoy your vacation!

Not necessarily true or maybe I just got lucky with a good amount of camera shops in my area? There are a quite few that still do on site developing, as I'll occasionally switch back to film if I'm feeling nostalgic and break out the old Nikon.

I learned years ago that the quality of a typical "press the button and let the prints fly" place like Walgreen or CVS that batch prints everything is so poor it's barely worth your time. And there's usually not any significant price difference so maybe worth looking in to what's available in your area! :)

Nope, none of the camera stores in our area (or extended area within an hour+ drive) have on-site developing. They didn't feel there was enough demand to continue that service. I love our older Nikon much more than our digital cameras, but I rarely use it anymore.

I don't know of any place in our area that developes film. We have no camera stores anymore, only places like Walgreens and CVS that use to develop film.

disposable cameras are awful. They take terrible photos, they're expensive, and it costs an arm and a leg to print the pictures. You can buy a cheaper digital camera for under $100, but I love the idea of using an old phone. I have two of those lying around :) I'll have to see which takes better pictures. My kid's digital camera's or my old Samsung S3. LOL

That's so disheartening. Kills me that the indie/mom & pop shops have been so killed off. I'm lucky I guess; I live in the metro Detroit area and have two different shops within 20 minutes that develop 35 mm in-store.

To go on our cruise last August, we bought both kids Nikon CoolPix S32 cameras. They are waterproof and shock proof. They also are easy to use and can add frames to their photos. The kids (7 and 10 at the time) loved using them.

My kids got the Vtech Kidizoom camera from amazon this past Christmas when they were 3. Good and cheap for younger kids and they love taking photos when we go to the zoo.

Oh! My (almost) 10 year old had a Kidizoom when he was 2. It didn't take the greatest pictures but he LOVED that thing and it was so fun to see the world through his eyes. Good memories (I'm really nostalgic right now since he turns 10 next week).

Now he's older and just uses his ipod to take pictures, which is good too.
