My DH was diagnosed with a kidney stone after taking him to the hospital Sunday night. He still hasn't passed it and was put on Percecet. He is still in pain every so often. He has an apt with a Urologist but not till Aug 6th. We are trying to get an apt sooner (not sure if they can do anything) but in the meantime he is drinking lots of water as suggested. Does anyone know what kind of foods he should avoid or he should eat. I tried looking it up on the web but only found foods to avoid not to recommend to eat. Thanks :)

My DH just went through this a few weeks ago. Percocet helped him at first, but he ended up back in the ER because the pain was so severe. Dilaudid is the only thing that helped him as he passed it. He was put him on Flomax to dilate the ureter to help the stone pass. It worked, but it took over a week! According to the CT Scan, that stone was fairly small at 3.5 mm.

He's going to end up having Lithotripsy because he has three others in his other kidney, one being a 10 mm. size stone, and that one is too big to pass!

They told him carbonated beverages, coffee, tea and salt have been known to cause stones. Other than that, some people make them, and some people don't. He wasn't told what foods to avoid other than those I just mentioned. :confused3

His urologist also ran some tests to see if his body is producing something that is making the stones. We haven't gotten the test results back yet on the findings.

Hope your husband feels better!

My brother has a 5mm stone that has not passed yet. They were on a boating trip and he ended up in the hospital in the Hamptons. They tried to remove the stone, but the balloon broke and they couldn't get to it?:confused3 They left him with a stent and told him to see his urologist when he returned to CT. His appointment for removal is this Friday . . .he has had the stent now for almost 2 weeks . . . I know he still is in pain and can't wait to have this thing removed.

Best wishes to your DH:wizard:

Oh do I know the pain of kidney stones all to well :( I currently have 3 stones in my left kidney and 4 stones in my right :scared1: I was in the hospital 3 weeks ago because the stones caused me to have both of my kidneys become infected and as if that wasn't enough, I got graced with a urinary tract infection of epic proportions. I am 31 and my doctor is quite concerned as I eat very healthy, little to no soda and water all day & night long; to have this many stones is quite unusual and I am ALWAYS terrified one will drop from my kidney into the tract and I'll be in pain. I currently have an appointment with a Nephrologist (kidney specialist) on Aug.6 and hopefully we can find out what is causing the stones and more importantly how to get rid of them...FOR GOOD!

My doctor has advised me to cut all caffeine out of my diet, food & drink with salt and to keep my dairy intake to a minimum for now until we find out what kind of stones I have (like calcium formed stones, etc). I'm not sure what other foods should be avoided, but if you have any questions/concerns as far as diet is concerned, I would definitely not hesitate to ask your doctor.

I can totally relate to the pain issue and how some pain medications work for a time but when the pain gets REALLY bad, they just seem to not cut it. I started out on Percocet, that stopped working, so then I was put on regular Vicodin 5/500, then Vicodin ES 7/750 and so far the latter has worked the best. I do know, however, when I am forced to go to the ER, they immediately give me Phenergan (for the nausea) and a lot of Dilaudid which always does the trick. My doctor has told me she is hesitant to actually prescribe Dilaudid because it is 3 times as strong as Morphine and incredibly addictive. Unfortunately, every pain medication that helps kidney stone pain is addictive (Percs, Vicodin, etc) but I always tell her I'd rather NOT have kidney stones than constantly be drugged up :rotfl:

I wish your DH lots of luck, I know how horrid the pain is :(

I forgot about calcium! They told him to limit is intake of dairy products, but he doesn't consume a whole lot of it. :confused3 He used to heavily salt his food however. I used to rag on him all the time about it.

His Urologist had no problem prescribing Dilaudid for him. She was actually surprised when he said Percocet was working at first. Then all of a sudden---whamo! It started moving and Percocet (even taking 2 of them at once) was useless. The combination of Dilaudid and Phenergan worked like a charm. With Dilaudid (taken by mouth) he said you don't get the same "drug high" that you get from the other narcotics like Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lortab, Lorcet) or Oxycodone (Percocet, Percodan.) He was able to take it and still drive and function half normally on Dilaudid. Dilaudid by IV is a different story though. I've had that myself and it knocked me on my rear!

With the three large stones still up in his left kidney, he feels like a walking time bomb. Will they drop today, tonight, tomorrow? Next week, next year? The large 10 mm. one will cause major problems if it decides to move because it'll block urine flow causing major complications. He wants them out of there!

Not to hijack this thread, but what are the symptoms of kidney stones in men? DH has been having some random pains lately, and I'm wondering if its related to this (of course he's too stubborn to see the doctor at the moment).

Flank pain that extends into the groin area. Usually nasty colored urine (due to blood) as well.

He could try cranberry juice. I've never been given a list of foods I should eat, but I was told not to drink soda, eat pickles, broccoli, and dairy in excess.

I feel for your husband. I know how painful it is.

That's the thing, you never know. Sometimes they can get down to the bladder and stay there a while, too.

I've had and still have kidney stones. I was told to drink lots of water and to avoid gravy, darker sodas (coke), tea and use less salt. There's different types of stones. Mine are calcium oxalate.

I have had at least 10 kidney stones. After about the 6th trip to the hospital, I now just keep a bottle of painkillers handy. I can feel the onset of one coming and usually will take a painkiller immediately.

I have always passed them. Once, while in the ER.

The last time I had an x-ray done, the doc said my kidney looked like a gravel pit.

I was told to primarily stay away from dark sodas and limit the dairy products.

I drink cranberry (cran-apple & cran-grap) juice a lot.

If it were kidney stones........it wouldn't really be a "random pain".

Most of the time my pain begins just out of the blue. It usually starts on my left side and toward the back. And within minutes, the pain is excrutiating.

I've had kidney stones in 1998 and 2002.
The ones in 1998 were much worse. I had surgery and the procedure where they use radio shock waves to break them up.
In 2002, they struck while we were at Kennywood. I went to this podunky hospital's ER. They passed after we sat in the waiting room for 3 hours. I just walked out. Good thing I left without seeing anyone. We found out later that three of my DH's relatives have died in that hospital :scared1: No country medicine for us, thanks!
I had uric acid kidney stones - from not having enough fluids in the body when I was little.
Soooo... hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

I feel your husbands pain! I just went through 2 surgeries to first insert a stent then, Break up the stone that was stuck and would'nt move for nothing!

There really is no way to say how long it will take for those stones to pass.
The smaller stones that I had passed but it took weeks!

My Urologist says to drink lemonade... not sure why but I do now.

No salt, no pizza, no alot of other thing too :) ... I had a kidney stone last year and it was the worst thing EVER! I was in the hospital for 3 days! It was the worst pain I ever had in my entire life!
But water is the most important thing.
