Kidney Stone! Advice?

OK--hubby ended up in the ER Thursday morning in EXTREME pain with his second kidney stone (first was 10 years ago). It's just above his bladder, about 4mm (with 4 more in the kidney!!). The first one had to be surgically removed, so we REALLY want this one to pass. He's been chugging water/cranberry juice for two days. Any good ideas for breaking this thing down? (Yes, we've already seen a doctor; yes, we'll follow up with the urologist; we just want to get rid of this thing over the weekend!!)

(Just a side note. . .we've heard the beer remedy, but we don't drink alcohol at all, so that's out.)

My poor DH suffers with kidney stones also  .. his last one was just a few weeks ago and it was right above his baldder also and was 3mm ... after he received the good ol' morphine shot in the ER he felt much better and was released with a prescription for Percocet ... however, he just continued to drink a lot of water for the next few days and thankfully, he felt nothing else ... he didn't even have to take anymore pain meds ... we have learned that once the stone gets into the bladder, the worse is over ... so I would suggest to just continue to drink a lot of water ...

Cranberry Juice is on my DH's Dietery Guidelines AVOID list that his urologist gave him for patients with Calcium Oxalate stones ... ironically, where cranberry juice is good for the urinary tract, cranberries are a high-oxalate food which can cause kidney stones ...

I hope your DH feels better soon ...

Pain Killers and lot's of water is all that you can really do. My dh gets these fairly often, we actually are taking percocet on vacation with us, just in case. They are horrible, but unless they are bad enough for surgery (and if they are I don't think there is a darn thing you can do to break them down other than that) all you can do it wait.

I too suffer from Kidney stones and my dr told me to drink grapfruit juice and to avoid cranberry juice... as the PP said the cranberry juice can help form calcifications... good luck

My doctor usually gives me Flomax to help pass a stone. Other than that lots of water and patience.

BTW, the beer remedy doesn't work.I drink a lot of beer and I still get stones. The one thing I do is moan a lot! :lmao:

Oh, your poor DH. My mom has to have surgery for kidney blockage. I hope you don't have to have surgery and can flush out the stones.

Update. . .

well, nothing really to report, other than the fact that DH has taken in so much fluid that he says he's about to float away!!:boat:

He's in moderate discomfort (as opposed to very little pain yesterday), so hopefully the darn thing is moving!!

He has my complete sympathy. I have not found anything that works, and there is nothing you can do yourself to break it up. I've even tried jumping up and down and that doesn't help either. :rotfl: Usually pacing and swearing, or rolling around on the bed and swearing are my preferred methods for dealing with a kidney stone attack.

Keep pushing the water. I've tried lemonade, too, but that doesn't seem to help either. At least it tastes a little better than water. Have they talked about doing lithotripsy to bust up the stone?

Not yet. . . they want to see if it will pass on its own first since it's so close to his bladder already. (TMI, I know)

Here's a happy thought. . .he's got 4 more lurking in the kidney!:scared:

Poor thing. He's got me beat. I've got one and possibly two in my kidney that they are keeping their eyes on. Don't let him suffer too long. The last time I went for weeks "trying" to pass the stone, before they finally did lithotripsy. After they performed the procedure, it still took 2 weeks for the stone to pass. I passed it on Christmas morning, and I still say that it was the best Christmas present I have ever received.

:lmao: Think I'll take my gifts wrapped and under the tree any day!! I've watched him deal with this thing. . . I'd take labor pains again first!!
