Keurig good for a college student?

KCups are really expensive, so I'm not sure it would be the best gift for a college student.

I agree (best price I can find is about 48 cents per kcup), but you can buy a basket and holder that lets you pack your own. That's what we usually do at home; more affordable, more variety!

Personally, I love the Keurig for coffee and tea only. The hot chocolate is not very good and I have tried them all. I sent my college DD a Sunbeam Hot Shot water dispenser ($20) with a mug and her favorite packaged hot chocolate. This seems to work better for her and her roommate. If you decide to go with the Keurig, Kohl's is the best place to buy them when you have a 30% off coupon.

I have to agree. What I like to do is buy Swiss Mix packets, add one to my cup and THEN brew my coffee into that.

I personally find the K-cups too expensive for my budget so I buy Folger's or Maxwell House on sale and use My K-cup filter. I would think a college student would appreciate the My K-Cup.

Make sure that it's even allowed in a dorm before you spend any money. My DD is at IL State and they do not allow any heating product besides an iron and curling iron in the dorm. Coffee pots, hot plates, toaster ovens, microwaves... are prohibited.

Thank you VERY much!
My dd is a senior in HS and will be going away next year for college.
I want to get her a few things for college for Christmas and have been thinking a long time about the Keurig. She is not a coffee drinker but a big tea and hot chocolate drinker.
I googled the Sunbeam you mentioned above and it looks like a great alternative. Cost is not the issue, I just want it to be convenient for her.
Does the Sunbeam hold enough water for a few large cups of hot chocolate or tea before it needs to be refilled?
Thank you very much!

At my daughter's dorm, they are not allowed to have any type of regular coffee maker (with an exposed heat element). However, they are allowed to have a Keurig type machine.

I bought my DD one at Target last year around Christmas when it was on sale and gave a Target gift card. It was actually a Mr. Coffee style Keurig.

Maggie

gggrrr...I guess I will just have to wait to see if they allow the Sunbeam or the Keurig.

She is applying ED to Muhlenberg and she should know before Christmas so I'll just wait.

Thanks.

We have 1 sumbeam in the house and DH has one in his shop at work. I believe that you can get 2 cups of hot chocolate in one heating, but honestly it heats so fast that by the time you have opened the packed and dumped it in the cup the water is hot.

I would go with the sunbeam over the keurig. Like others have said, they can also dump instant oatmeal into a mug and have a quick breakfast.
DS does this and takes it to the bus stop in cold mornings.

I agree, it'll heat up 1 or 2 cups worth of water but it's very decently fast
