We were at a store yesterday that sells the Keurig Coffee Makers. DH is the coffee drinker in our family and he was looking at them. He had never heard of them before. I remembered reading about them frequently on the Disboards so I told him I would ask about them. We know little to nothing about the advantages / disadvantages of them over regular coffee makers. We now have a Cuisinart Coffee Maker that DH loves. But he was intrigued by the Keurig. Do they just make one cup at a time? What are the sizes? Sorry for all the questions, but these are what he was asking me and I couldn't give him any answers except that my fellow Disboarders were always posting things about them. For those of you who have them, do you have a regular Coffee pot to make a full pot of coffee when necessary? Any input would be great. Thinking of maybe getting him one for his birthday in April. Thanks!

I just got one for Christmas and am not really a huge coffee drinker but am quickly becoming one thanks to the keurig! ;)

I have the mini, it makes 6 oz, 8 oz and 10 oz. I usually do 8 oz, since sometimes the 10 oz tastes a little watered down. The one I have is meant to be portable, so there is no water resevoir, you add water each time, which is not a problem for me. DH doesn't drink coffee, so the one cup brewing is perfect. We do have a regular coffee maker, that we could use for company, but I'd probably let them use the keurig, since it's fun to pick a flavor and all that.

If he is a big coffee drinker I'd get one of the larger units. For the larger ones, I think you can even fit a travel mug under it. They also brew faster than the mini.

It's really fun to try new flavors and sometimes I just use it for hot water for tea or cocoa. There are tea and cocoa k-cups but I haven't tried any of them yet.

So for advantages:

1) each person can have the flavor they want, it's quick and easy

2) there is virtually no clean-up on a daily basis, just throw out the k-cup.

3) lots of flavors

4) good if you only need a cup or two of coffee, and the rest of the pot would be wasted.

disadvantages:

1) more expensive than using a regular coffee maker, k-cups are more expensive than buying a bag of coffee although there is an accessory you can buy that lets you use regular coffee grinds.

2) you may become addicted to coffee and want to buy lots of different flavors even though you haven't come close to finishing the ones you already have. :rolleyes1

I love mine. It makes the perfect freshest cup of coffee. I hate old coffee that has been sitting around. I buy kcups online and have them shipped, works out to about 50 cents a cup, but well, I am no longer wasting half a pot.

I also use it to make my oatmeal. Just leave out the kcup, and make hot water. So I make oatmeal and coffee every am. That is something I learned from a fellow diser!

I have a Tassimo which I like better than the Keurig. We have a Keurig at work and my Tassimo makes much better coffee.

They both work on the same principle of only making one cup at a time. You can get flavored coffees, dark coffees, mild coffees and everyone can have what they want. Mine also make lattes and cappachinos.

Love my Keurig! Since this is the budget board here is my advice if you decide to buy one, check out your local grocery store for the maker. I bought the "Classic" one at my local grocery store (has a refillable resevour and can make two different sizes) for $80. Which is about $40 less than the stores and $20 less than the Mini. Just a thought.

We like it at our house because my DH drinks decaf, my mom drinks regular and I drink tea. We can all have what we want and not throw away half the pot!

I make my tea by just using the Keurig for the hot water and then putting in a tea bag.

We also are more of a "1 cup in the morning" type family, so making a whole pot of each type (decaf, reg) was a waste.

It is more expensive, but worth it for us.

I don't like throwing away all the K-cups, but I save the K-cups and clean them out. Then I give them to my DD who lives in a college dorm. They are allowed to have Keurigs but not regular coffee makers. But Kcups are a little expensive for college students. So they use my cleaned out Kcups and put in their own coffee. I bought these caps for the used Kcups:
http://www.amazon.com/Kaps-K-Cups-R...1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1295877326&sr=8-1

It is much easier for them to use these than using the MyKCup because they can just throw away the cup each time (not the cap!) and don't have to clean it out each time like the MyKCup.

I have a Keurig at work too in my office. I have some of the tea Kcups. I find these a little strong. I use each one 3 times. I drink about 3 cups a day at work. So it works out nicely. I find the first cup a little strong, the second cup just right, the 3rd cup a little weak. But they are all fine and it helps cut down on the amount of Kcups I use and throw away.

I bought the one we have at home from QVC when they had it as their daily special. It is the one that has the extra cup size. I really find that useful.

They had these at Costco this week, and people were buying them like crazy. One guy had 3 he was buying. I was curious about them too, so this thread was helpful. Considering one someday.

I bought my mom one for Christmas at Bed & Bath. They give out a lot of 20% off coupons in the weekly newspaper and sometimes online and via mail or email.

We love ours, use it for hot cocoa and tea just by using the water setting only. Since we only have one coffee drinker in the house, saves wasted coffee and time. Got one for a friend and she loves it too. I stock up at Kohls when I get my discounts coupons and the K-cups go on sale.

Mine is the $169 version at Kohl's. They had it for $139 & I had a 20% off coupon. It makes 2 sizes of cups. I just started using a couple of weeks ago & love it. Needless to say when I had the 30% off they did not have it online & I was nowhere near a store!

I was lucky as my WM was clearancing a couple of styles of multi-packs out at 50% off of the cups. So I actually had 4 boxes of cups before I ever even had the pot!

I think I am going to get him one for his birthday in April. I'll start looking now for sales. I always get the coupons for Bed, Bath and Beyond. That would help out a lot. We just seem to waste a lot of coffee. On days that he works, he will use an entire pot by filling his thermos and travel mug, but on days he is home, we throw away a half pot of coffee. Again, thanks for all the advice. I can always depend on my fellow Disboarders!

Cuisinart makes one and uses K-cups. I think better build quality.

Just bought one on Monday at Kmart for a friend. Kmart, and Target, I believe both have the B40 Elite for $109.99. Thats still cheaper than BBW with a coupon and Kohls with a coupon.
